Re: Polygamy and later sexual repression

Rob, I suspect that my “wrench” above is actually a “cog” in the whole theory. See, with how they insisted on marrying young women instead of old widows to “take care of them” they had to have a cover theory other than lust. So, it was all about building up their posterity for the next life. This i...

Re: Polygamy and later sexual repression

Chapter 2: Lucinda Harris. Finally the strangeness of the polyandrous triangle with Smith was posthumously commemorated. On January 22, 1846, Lucinda was sealed to Joseph “for eternity” and to George for time in a proxy marriage. ... This sealing seems to show George’s awareness of his wife’s connec...

Re: The Flawed Logic of Governments and Religion

Okay, so I feel a little better now. While not good numbers in terms of reassurance, they're much better than never. The findings on reading comport with some other recent data on American reading trends. Numbers from the National Endowment for the Arts show that the share of adults reading at leas...

Re: The Flawed Logic of Governments and Religion

People don't generally judge by drawing conclusions from facts; they are swayed by charismatic and narcissistic leaders, and propaganda in all its forms. I once read a quote from a man who said this: "The typical American adult believes he is well informed when he sees a headline in a newspaper or m...

Re: Have any GA's talked about a faith/truth crisis?

I would suspect that if any of them did, it is carefully censored and would never be allowed to be talked about in public. If knowledge of a real faith crisis got out, it would put a huge wedge in their divine providence image. I think by the time they get to the Q15 stage, they are vetted as exper...

Re: Polygamy and later sexual repression

Rob, have you read the book " The women of Mormonism : or, The story of polygamy as told by the victims themselves" by Froiseth, Jennie Anderson published in 1882? When you're done reading your book, go and read this one. It's from many of the victims of polygamy and explains their story so well yo...

chapter 1 end... It is a good example of what Lerner calls the “commodification” of women. Compton, Todd M.. In Sacred Loneliness: The Plural Wives of Joseph Smith (Kindle Locations 1375-1376). Signature Books. Kindle Edition. Alas...this is what you and others have said about this polygamy thing--i...

Re: Polygamy and later sexual repression

The polygamous marriage proposal is indirect, a remarkable combination of the romantic and the non-romantic. “I love Fanny,” Smith tells Hancock, yet he does not profess his love to Fanny face to face. He uses an intermediary, a male relative, to propose to her. Despite the indirection, this is ent...

Re: Polygamy and later sexual repression

As early as Spring of 1832 Bro Joseph said “Brother Levi, the Lord has revealed to me that it is his will that righteous men shall take Righteous women even a plurality of Wives that a Righteous race may be sent forth uppon the Earth preparatory to the ushering in of the Millenial Reign of our Rede...

Re: Polygamy and later sexual repression

This thread really took a detour. I was gunna read that book and comment on how I felt there was a connection between polygamy and sexual repression, as the polygamous mothers trained their children to abhor anything remotely connecting sexuality with "pleasure". I'll try to post findings for the f...

Re: Polygamy and later sexual repression

The LDS church's position on masterbation has shifted so many times, I have no idea if there even is a position on it now. Its totally "leadership roulette", which means it depends on what your Bishop or SP read recently as to their opinion. If they are reading MOF, for example, then they will be mo...

Re: Polygamy and later sexual repression

In my prior stake, ALL MEN were asked by the bishop and stake presidency both some additional questions: "When was the last time you looked at porn?" and "When was the last time you masterbated?" Even if you assume all men have at some point, plenty go periods after repenting without. I went years ...

Re: Bill Reel--Disciplinary Court is Imminent

Just read the post you linked to and shared my love and understanding to Bill. He is a GREAT and kind man. And, I don't think his influence is gunna wane. Like John Dehlin, it will continue. As time passes, more and more of these high-profile people will continue to be pushed out, and their collecti...

Re: Visit to the Tanners' Bookstore

For those who purchase books, I suggest you try her store for your NOM needs. I don't get anything for saying this...but the lady has been through a lot with the LDS slanders against her. And, all in all, she is a champion of honest history.

Re: Thomas Stuart Ferguson <-- the book?

Isn't it amazing that LDS leaders would use deception, denial, and even criminal activities to cover the factual histories? Its a pretty sad policy when you have to hope that members don't read something lest they ask questions....
