Re: Why don't they teach this aspect of Celestial Marriage?

I recall Joseph fielding Smith trying to address this in an "Answers to Gospel Questions" probably in the fifties or sixties. He tried to say the passage didn't mean what it obviously said. Then he reaffirmed that sealed people could still go to the terrestrial or telestial kingdom if they didn't li...

Re: US Religion Census and the LDS church

This is interesting. I'm not sure what to make of it. Protestant Bodies Account for Most Congregations and Adherents Grouping Congregations Adherents % of population Black Protestant 17,754 4,877,067 1.6 Evangelical and Conservative Protestant 191,112 50,013,803 14.3 Mainline Protestant 77,760 22,65...

Oh my heck. Those darned Mormons are fibbers. :o
I'm curious to see if other churches have inflated numbers as well. ;)

Re: The Brighamite God.

When I got my endowments is 1975, I made my vows to the Brighamite god. Yup, that character that told Abraham and Joseph smith to lie about their wives. That character that told Nephi to chop off Laban's head. The god that inspired Brigham to proclaim Black people could not have the priesthood, at l...

Re: Election day

I agree with Utah Gerrymandering being problematic. If you want to see an election being stolen, consider how Utah's republican senators and representatives split the Salt Lake County vote. :(

Re: The Brighamite God.

You are right wtfluff. Differences between Brighamite god and FLDS god are not substantial, especially if you are a man. One big difference for women: FLDS god doesn't let women have much say in who they are going to marry. Brighamite god does let LDS women have a say in who they marry in most cases.

Re: Russel Nelson and the 2nd Great Apostacy

"A man has to know [or admit] his limitations." Clint Eastwood, from "Dirty Harry."
edit) I mean Russell Nelson needs to learn his limitations.
I have had a couple of TBM's tell me that Pres. Nelson's last Conference talk sounded liked he is bidding farewell.

Re: Why modern prophets don't appear to have the gift of prophesy

I see two kinds of Prophecy in our world today. Traditional prophecy is tinged, perhaps saturated with magic. It is almost always vague as to what it means, and and when and if it will be fulfilled. Scientific prophecy can foresee illness, astronomical events like comets, even election results, (thi...

The Brighamite God.

I've been pondering the characteristics of the God LDS prophets have preached through the years with the type of God I think most LDS/Mormons believe in. I see significant differences. The LDS Church teaches a changeable god who will exaggerate, deceive, and lie. See: D&C 19:6-12, Abraham 2:22-24, E...

Re: Original Doctrines

The "Gospel Tangents" series is well done. Rick Bennett seems like a nuanced Mormon- and with a sense of humor. :D And Joe Jessup is a very informed commentator on polygamy and its various proponents like AUB, FLDS, etc.

Re: Russel Nelson and the 2nd Great Apostacy

I am surprised that the Lord didn't send an angel with a sword to correct or remove Hinckley and Monson. It would almost seem that sometimes God allows his prophets- GASP! - to lead the Church astray. :o Will the Church's next proclamation declare the saving doctrine that the Pres. Nelson ha...

I wish you well, Stealth. I find this fascinating. Personally, I find that certain pieces of music or scenes from nature can send me into a mild to moderate euphoria, and I know how to use them to achieve this, so I'll stick to them for now, but thanks for sharing. :D 8-)

Deacon Blues Law of persuasion #1.

#1 When a disputed idea/fact/meme/world view is being discussed/debated/argued each proponent will ALWAYS EXAGGERATE the evidence/anecdotes/statistics that support their claim. I believe this rule is not 50%, not 75%, but 99% true. ;)

I'm surprised no one thought of this before. :o Oh, wait. It's been happening for centuries, even millennia. At least back to 4000 B.C.

A Modest Proposal-- Really!

Utah has "released time" Seminary for religious and/or moral instruction. The LDS Church finances it, develops the curriculum- some might argue indoctrination- but that's not the point I'm getting at- REALLY. :D The point I'm getting at is young people/students can, or should benefit from moral inst...

Where is the Primitive Christianity?

Hagoth brought this up on a different post, but it's an excellent post. The words of Jesus in 3rd Nephi are, well, starting with the 'Sermon on the Mount,' largely redundant. Did Jesus teach the Nephites baptism for the dead? Not that we know of. What about the two priesthoods, and the importance of...
