"We don't say that person is gay..." - I'm furious about labeling

So President Oaks spoke at Blackfoot West Stake Center in Idaho this past Saturday (see https://www.idahostatejournal.com/news/local/lds-president-oaks-speaks-to-parents-at-large-blackfoot-gathering/article_f476dd3b-5d09-5cff-8bb4-5c58c004193f.html ), and as part of the meeting there was a panel: Af...

Re: Emma - Victim or Co-Conspirator?

Many of you make a lot of good points about Emma as a victim, I think there are some good arguments to be made to that effect. Alas has a good point about why William Law felt the way he did about Emma. And Yobispo makes a good point, it's a false dichotomy to make it sound either/or anyway. Sure wi...

Church Spokesman Dishonesty - Bishops are "Volunteers"

So you've all heard by now about the former bishop and current high counselor who was caught taking pictures of a woman in a dressing room in Tennessee: https://www.ksl.com/article/46622145/local-church-leader-charged-in-dressing-room-camera-incident Here's a quote from the article: Church spokesman...

Re: Emma - Victim or Co-Conspirator?

I think she was more victim than conspirator. Unlike many who discredit her because she lied about polygamy. I excuse Emma for “lying” about polygamy because if polygamy was never of God, then Joseph didn’t practice polygamy because he just committed adultery. If you look at how he practiced polyga...

Re: Bishopric -> EQP: And I feel.... numb.

Having accepted many callings myself because of my wife, you truly have my sympathy. There is little I can give in the way of comfort, other than the suggestion to do everything half-baked. When I was Elder's Quorum president I was there for each and every move and service project, but I never did P...

Re: Ed Smart comes out as gay

Let’s be fair to Blashrykh - while “destroying” may not be the word everyone might choose, Ed Smart’s family is changing significantly in a way that is difficult for the parties involved. The marital connection between Smart and his wife is in fact “destroyed” through divorce, whatever friendship th...

Re: Ed Smart comes out as gay

So let me get this straight. Ed Smart destroys his family because he likes dudes and he is the world's greatest martyr. A hero more grand than old Jesus H. Christ himself. So let's pretend Mr. Smart destroyed his family by sleeping with the Relief Society President. My guess is that you would all s...

Re: Silver fox is coming!

Looks like the Silver fox is joining us for stake conference next weekend. Guess I will have to try and attend that one to see what all the excitement is about listening to a former airline pilot and corporate executive board member who still can't heal people. I’ve said it many times - President U...

Re: New Protecting Children and Youth Training from the LDS Church

So when will they issue an apology to Sam Young and admit he was right? Also, did the church claim for a longtime that they were the "Gold Standard" for protecting children? That they were doing everything possible to prevent abuse? Guess they weren't doing 'everything.' Without Sam Young, this tra...

Emma - Victim or Co-Conspirator?

There’s an interesting thread on Emma Smith over on Reddit ( https://www.reddit.com/r/exmormon/comments/cs9krw/emma_the_bad_ass/ ), and it is making me re-think my feelings about Emma Smith. I had always concurred with William Law, “Emma was a full accomplice of Joseph’s crimes. She was a large, coa...

May we who are disaffected treat Brother Smart with compassion and understanding, because heaven knows he won't get that from believing members.

Re: New Protecting Children and Youth Training from the LDS Church

It is arguably the right move. But, some inspired prophet should have put this in place at least a century ago. It just looks like a prudent response in the current litigious environment. Is it a step in the right direction? Sure, but to your point, a Church led by God would have had something in p...

When questioned on why tea and coffee are on this list, LDS apologists will say it is a test of obedience. I would suggest instead that it is a test of uncritical thinking and conforming to dubious rules.
Well said! I second that!

Re: Green tea is officially bad for you, against WoW

Gotta love the way the Word of Wisdom forbids all kinds of things that aren't actually mentioned in the Word of Wisdom (green tea, marijuana, etc.). Hell, I almost think most members have never actually read section 89 and have no idea what it really says. For something not given 'by commandment or ...

Re: ‘The Myth of the Unrighteous Parent’....A Fantastic New Post by Lindsay Hansen Park....

That is an excellent article. Lucky for me, I only have one child where I worry about how the Church impacts what they think of me, the rest of them see the Church for what it is. Of course, with my wife, I will never be the "worthy priesthood holder she married", and I can only imagine how it makes...

Re: Modesty Requirements for Youth Conference

If you ask me, this warps minds of the youth in a couple of ways: It teaches them to be judgmental about what others are wearing It teaches them that the most important things about modesty are what you are wearing, rather than a commitment to values It teaches them to be ashamed of their bodies (th...

Re: Elder Snow: Race essay was intentionally ambiguous

If only there were a Prophet on Earth - or even 15 of them - who could talk to God and sort all of this out. Then we'd have all the information we need, but as it is, "there is just not enough information on that race in the Priesthood."

Anyone else suspicious that this procedure might not be always administered with purely medical interests in mind?

Agree with the opinions above that this should never be done except at the direct request of the patient. Otherwise it is at best presumptuous and at worst really creepy.

Re: Elder Steven Snow: Most Members Couldn't Care Less

It’s hard for me to see it as anything but a tacit admission that they knowingly deceive the members. The members couldn’t care less about a lot of things that get included in the correlated lesson materials, so why nothing from the essays? You think most members give a rip about the Abrahamic coven...

Elder Steven Snow: Most Members Couldn't Care Less

This is a fascinating quote: Elder Snow: That was that was the concern. We wanted to help a lot of people that were struggling on some of these questions. But you’ve got to understand that a large majority, a large percentage of the church could care less. That really hasn’t been anything they’ve wo...
