Re: Have any of you considered Catholicism?

You could try the Episcopal Church, which has the liturgies (consensus is that the Episcopal Church has maintained the old liturgies better than have the Roman church, especially after the changes Rome made to the liturgy in the 1960s); better music; fully affirming of LGBT (including marriage and f...

Wheat & Tares Series on Middle Way Mormonism

The blog Wheat and Tares is running a series of posts discussing the feasibility of middle way Mormonism. Figured it might be interesting to everyone here. https://wheatandtares.org/2018/11/02/the-road-less-traveled/ https://wheatandtares.org/2018/11/02/middle-way-mormonism/ https://wheatandtares.or...

Re: Inquiring Minds Want to Know Why

Something else to keep in mind is that Christians also affirm the the Bible is infallible. Really, they are used to ignoring historical evidence. I think you mean American Evangelical Christians think the Bible is infallible. The majority of Christianity does not share this view (e.g., Eastern Orth...

Re: Zaphod's Church Shopping Story

Our family also attends a local Episcopal parish. We enjoy the tradition, liturgy, and music - but most of all we enjoy the people. Great people all around who are very welcoming and affirming. It's a place run by people so there are disagreements here and there, but everyone seems to be just trying...

Re: Moving - Managing Activity in Church

Our family no longer attends the LDS Church, though we have not resigned. We are leaving the door open for our children should they choose to engage with the LDS Church in the future. Instead, we attend the Episcopal Church and love it. I would echo the comments of others on this thread, but want to...

Whenever I hear this nonsense taught one my favorite things to quote is this: And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any, Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood ...

Re: "And it came to pass" - evidence for BoM authenticity

And it came to pass, LDS apologists began to wonder if Hebrew usage of 'it came to pass' was important... (this is an authentic post, from the original Hebrew, in case anyone is wondering, because I used 'and it came to pass' :D ). More seriously, are these apologists not aware this is a key phrase...

My family is in a similar boat to you (though we have three kids: two teens and one Primary-aged). Aside from a couple of missionary farewells/homecomings, we've been to church once this year and my wife couldn't make it all the way through. We love our time we spend together on Sundays and we are h...

Re: Elder Rasband sucks up to President Eyring on Facebook

Granted, I am "past feeling" and was there without a (regular) Temple Recommend, but I was in the Idaho Falls Temple, for the (1st of 3) re-dedication services. I don't remember any emphasis (by Eyring or any other speaker) on Jesus Christ. I've heard that (either in the 2nd or 3rd session), Eyring...

Re: Prosperity Gospel

The book of Job is a fantastic treatise destroying the prosperity gospel. To get the concept one needs to read beyond the two or three verses the LDS Church proof-texts, however. If you read the entire thing, you'll notice that there are two components to the book of Job: a story and a poem smashed ...

This sounds very interesting! Do you know how widely this book is read and/or respected by apologists? Does Bushman use any of it in RSR?
I can't recall if Bushman uses it as a source in RSR, but Leonard Arrington wrote the forward, I believe. I'm not sure how apologists view the book.

Re: Revelation of convenience

I couldn't agree more. John Corrill's writings are fascinating and he is a contemporary source. His book: A Brief History of the Church of Christ of Latter Day Saints (Commonly Called Mormons) was a huge eye opener for me regarding what really took place in Missouri (he wrote it in 1839). You can o...

Re: Revelation of convenience

You should read about John Corrill and the events surrounding his life in the church. There were a lot of complaints in Kirtland and Missouri about Joseph's convenient revelations. Newel Whitney and John Corrill were pretty active in pushing back against that stuff. Whitney eventually caved while Co...
