Re: Not historical?

I think people read too much into his statement. Saying the BoM is not a historical textbook is not the same as saying that the BoM stories are not historical. If asked to clarify I think Nelson would say that the BoM relates real historical events but the value of the BoM is not in relaying history...

Re: Church Quells COVID-19

When placed on the scales of anti-mask/vax members rushing to return to the way things were, does the $20 million donation make the church a net queller or net contributor of covid?

Re: Temple changes

Remember the April 2020 general conference? Nothingburgers come in attractive packaging. There could be changes. I'm not expecting much given recent changes and given the constraints that the church has to work within. The ceremony itself is weird and it doesn't look like it will be as easy to place...

They also have a garment supply issue. I ordered some and it took 6 months to get them. Granted supply issues should be a short term problem but it could be a contributor to any decision. People that want garments but can't get them for months and months on end. Like people that receive the endowmen...

Re: General Konference Predictions

I'll give my standard, perennial prediction.

You want a prediction about general conference, you're asking the wrong guy. I'll give you a general conference prediction: It's gonna be irrelevant, it's gonna be boring, and it's gonna last you for the rest of your life.

Re: Tithing

For most of us I'm sure we spent way too much money on tithing :x I still feel compelled to pay some but not nearly as much as in the past (Because my wife still expects me to be a "full tithe payer". As time goes on however, I feel less inclined to pay to the "morg". But I think I would feel bette...

Weren't Pharisees all about outward signs of inward commitments. Specifically so they could measure (judge) people's inward commitments?

That would be interesting. It would weed out wards in countries where there are 900+ members on the roles with less than 100 attending.

Re: New Ward because .. why?

I was curious about the average number of members per unit and made a quick graph using numbers from the statistical reports on membership and the number of units (wards + branches): mpw.png I was surprised to see that the average number of members per unit has gone up in the last 20 years. I was ha...

Re: General Konference Predictions

One small prediction that I'll make is that the speakers will put a HEAVY focus on what makes the church "good." I think that given that the church is facing backlash for its LGBT stance and its massive wealth that they will make an effort to really trumpet their donations and community efforts to ...

Re: Where Will You Go?

Here's the quote from Ballard: If any one of you is faltering in your faith, I ask you the same question that Peter asked: “To whom shall you go?” But that's not the same question Peter asked in the story. Jesus: Will ye also go away? Peter: Lord, to whom shall we go? Now imagine if the story went l...

Re: Who still believes in prayer?

I don't understand the story, particularly this bit: was told there was another person with the same name that needed to be found first and he was The guy got lost on a 50 mile hike, prayed and his answer was to "wait," presumably meaning "stay put," because when you're lost waiting until you're fou...

Re: Missing Gospel Topics Essays

It's been interesting, this has happened a bunch of times with website changes, some exmo's lose their minds and the essays inevitably show upa few days later. Pretty much this. Though I do find it interesting how the website hiccups appear to be isolated to the essays. It's also interesting how th...

Re: Who thinks they're going to the CK?

As an orthodox believer I internalized quite a lot of the messaging and wound up with a severe case of scrupulosity. With that background and looking at things retrospectively, I wouldn't call the members that felt like they were going to the CK arrogant or narcissistic, I'd say that they were someh...

Re: Should anti-maskers in youth/primary callings be released?

She said the crux of the issue is that the kids can see the rebellion in church where they are supposed to be learning gospel principles from trusted adults. It's a shame that the culture views strict obedience to leaders as a gospel principle. I would have hoped that the true gospel principle in t...

Roman Catholic and used by many Christian denominations, but Onward, Christian Soldiers. There's lots of warlike imagery in our hymns and doctrines. The way people often talk about the Second Coming comes off as more of a revenge fantasy than anything else. Even more interesting is the original lyri...

Re: Is it time to update the “bubble of threats” chart?

alas' post really drives this point home, but it occurs to me that all of the original bubbles are outward-looking. It's all stuff that they believe others are doing wrong. Where's the introspection? The one that really gets me is 'Need "something more"' Maybe they meant the people clamoring for the...

Considering the heading of the slide says Issues and Ideas Leading People Away from the Gospel you only need one giant bubble that says, "The Church."

Re: Jeffrey Holland is a terrible human being so it's fitting he gave this talk at BYU

Liberty could probably hang with BYU in football. It could be the new rivalry, could have a trophy that passes to the winner each year. Liberty might not go for it, but they could cast some tumbaga plates (gold is heavy and expensive) and each year carve the winner on the plate. Verily, verily, it c...
