Re: Prayer Circles

Like many things in Mormonism, prayer circles were borrowed from others and modified to have their own Mormon flavor. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prayer_circle I've seen LDS families do prayer circles outside the temple, like when the home teachers or missionaries are visiting. Those prayer circle...

Re: Keeping up with Trump

People with NPD are often successful in attaining leadership positions. Manipulation comes natural to them and they often have a lack of empathy, two traits that can help anyone rise to the top of any organization. A part of the illness is building themselves up by tearing others down, nothing is ev...

Re: Keeping up with Trump

I've been blind into thinking that Trump is an idiot, a buffoon, a big loser that would eventually go away. He is actually quite smart when it comes to manipulation and lies. I have a different interpretation. I think he has severe NPD, an illness. I think his disorder is so bad that it impairs his...

Re: LDS callings: we've got it backwards

You sound like you're in my stake. They went full tilt on the church of assignment messaging a year or two back. You'd think it was the stake theme or something. I remember one Sunday School class where the BP got onto the instructor for asking for a volunteer for a closing prayer. Apparently they s...

Re: New garment survey

"This survey can only be taken by invitation" I got one about 5 or 6 years ago (the only survey I've ever received). They only asked about fit and fabrics... and now the garment choices are terrible compared to what they were. I was hoping that the questions would really get at whether to relax garm...

Re: Debate night: RFM vs Midnight Mormoms

Being completely unfamiliar with Midnight Mormons I watched most of the video linked on this page. That one guy kept going back to "wokeism" and he kept using the term as a pejorative. No real specifics, just woke, as if that alone was enough to communicate a point and win an argument. I see that so...

Re: “The Book of Mormon is not a book of history. The Book of Mormon is a book about the future.”

During the devotional, Elder Bednar encouraged attendees to study the Book of Mormon and learn how it applies to our lives today. “The Book of Mormon is not a book of history. The Book of Mormon is a book about the future.” He continued, “It describes episodes in the lives of people thousands of ye...

Re: Not historical?

I think people read too much into his statement. Saying the BoM is not a historical textbook is not the same as saying that the BoM stories are not historical. If asked to clarify I think Nelson would say that the BoM relates real historical events but the value of the BoM is not in relaying history...

Re: Church Quells COVID-19

When placed on the scales of anti-mask/vax members rushing to return to the way things were, does the $20 million donation make the church a net queller or net contributor of covid?

Re: Temple changes

Remember the April 2020 general conference? Nothingburgers come in attractive packaging. There could be changes. I'm not expecting much given recent changes and given the constraints that the church has to work within. The ceremony itself is weird and it doesn't look like it will be as easy to place...

They also have a garment supply issue. I ordered some and it took 6 months to get them. Granted supply issues should be a short term problem but it could be a contributor to any decision. People that want garments but can't get them for months and months on end. Like people that receive the endowmen...

Re: General Konference Predictions

I'll give my standard, perennial prediction.

You want a prediction about general conference, you're asking the wrong guy. I'll give you a general conference prediction: It's gonna be irrelevant, it's gonna be boring, and it's gonna last you for the rest of your life.

Re: Tithing

For most of us I'm sure we spent way too much money on tithing :x I still feel compelled to pay some but not nearly as much as in the past (Because my wife still expects me to be a "full tithe payer". As time goes on however, I feel less inclined to pay to the "morg". But I think I would feel bette...

Weren't Pharisees all about outward signs of inward commitments. Specifically so they could measure (judge) people's inward commitments?

That would be interesting. It would weed out wards in countries where there are 900+ members on the roles with less than 100 attending.

Re: New Ward because .. why?

I was curious about the average number of members per unit and made a quick graph using numbers from the statistical reports on membership and the number of units (wards + branches): mpw.png I was surprised to see that the average number of members per unit has gone up in the last 20 years. I was ha...

Re: General Konference Predictions

One small prediction that I'll make is that the speakers will put a HEAVY focus on what makes the church "good." I think that given that the church is facing backlash for its LGBT stance and its massive wealth that they will make an effort to really trumpet their donations and community efforts to ...

Re: Where Will You Go?

Here's the quote from Ballard: If any one of you is faltering in your faith, I ask you the same question that Peter asked: “To whom shall you go?” But that's not the same question Peter asked in the story. Jesus: Will ye also go away? Peter: Lord, to whom shall we go? Now imagine if the story went l...

Re: Who still believes in prayer?

I don't understand the story, particularly this bit: was told there was another person with the same name that needed to be found first and he was The guy got lost on a 50 mile hike, prayed and his answer was to "wait," presumably meaning "stay put," because when you're lost waiting until you're fou...
