Isn't that good science? Decide what you're looking for and then go find it?

"Laban also was a descendant of Joseph, wherefore he and his fathers had kept the records" [plates of brass] (1 Nephi 5:16). It's possible there could be more to the story, but it would seem that Nephi stole the plates owned by or left in the charge of Laban. Again, according to the Church's teachi...

I'm glad you told her that, and I'm glad she accepted it. Sometimes you need to set clear boundaries with the Church.

Re: Mayan palace at least 1,000 years old uncovered by archeologists in Mexico

I think we need to be aware that some of these fringe guys use arguments and reasoning that are very much along the same lines as Book of Mormon apologists. This makes me so glad that my eternal salvation does not hang on Graham Hancock - nor on any scientist - nor on any religious leader/organized...

Re: Mayan palace at least 1,000 years old uncovered by archeologists in Mexico

Yeah, that sounds like Graham Hancock. I think some of his stuff is really interesting but when you listen to his lectures (I haven't read his books) you hear a lot of this kind of thing: "scientists and archaeologists don't talk about me because they are so egotistical that they won't consider any...

Re: Mayan palace at least 1,000 years old uncovered by archeologists in Mexico

The difference in the book I read, Just This Guy, was that there was not as much water erosion on the head as there was on the body - plus the head is apparently a little smaller than it seems it ought to be. (And in the book I"m currently reading - Magicians of the Gods - the author believes there ...

Re: Bednar

I think my fantasy would be if I were to run into one of them would be to just treat them like the nobody that they are. At this point there's only a couple I would actually recognize anyway... but I think I would get a LOT of satisfaction from treating them like any other human and not feed their ...

Re: Bednar

If there was one COBler I could meet on the street it would be Bendnar. I have this social fantasy where I meet him in a public place and have the opportunity to challenge him to strike me dumb, def, blind or dead. I'd call him out on being a dishonest false prophet who has zero magic powers, yet e...

Re: Burial in temple clothes

Alas and Jeffret, thank you for your advice. I've told two of my kids that I don't want "heroic" methods to keep me alive, but I think filling out a form would be a good idea. I don't think they'd litigate to change it if I was incapacitated, though they might want more "heroic" measures than I want...

Re: Shifting towards gay acceptance?

A true schism may not be possible because all Church assets are under the control of 1 person so any large group leaving could be penniless... Ah, that makes sense. So, you're saying a true schism would divide assets to some degree or other. Totally true that since only one person controls all the ...

Re: Shifting towards gay acceptance?

I suppose you could call it a schism. I don't view it that way because I think of a schism as someone breaking off because of a major disagreement with the Church they once believed in. I see Snuffer as a man doing what he thought God wanted him to do and the Church kicked him out for it, not him le...

I am convinced that JS incorporated accepted health science of the day into scripture and attributed it to God as a revelation, this included the idea that the temperature of drinks was bad for the body and that tobacco healed bruises.
This makes a lot of sense to me - and explains a lot, really.

Re: Shifting towards gay acceptance?

In my lifetime: 1978 Priesthood ban lifted. No schism. (Schism defined as the formal separation of a Church into two Churches or the secession of a group owing to doctrinal and other differences) Actually, there were. I don't recall the names, but there were some people who left and started their o...

Re: Shifting towards gay acceptance?

I still remember the day that my then-8yo son came home and told me all about MLK Jr. and asked me if I could believe that people used to mean to black people. He honestly had no idea in his little world that was ever considered normal. I remember how shocked I was to find out (probably in my teens...

Re: Burial in temple clothes

Get your end of life wishes in writing. Is there a legal form for this? If so, does it vary by state (and what is it called, so I can do an internet search for it)? For example, I'm currently in Utah, but I hope to move to a different state at some point, and don't know if I'd need another form for...

Re: Burial in temple clothes

The idea is that at Christ's Second Coming and / or the Day of Resurrection (beliefs vary on exactly how or if those are connected), the graves will be opened and the dead will arise to meet him. If you're Mormon and you've been through the temple surely you want to meet him in your temple clothes ...
