Re: A tithing story
I must have missed the memo about the catching up with tithing. When I was in the calling-that-will-not-be-named, my understanding for those who missed a few tithing payments was to just encourage them to start, and not worry about catching up. How I lasted beyond the seven year mark without being ...

Re: Jimmer Fredette is a basketball God
We have an elder in the ward from China. He converted while completing a study abroad program. I don't know much about his story since his companion never let the conversation derail from the assigned message. The companion got transferred though, so maybe I'll get to see what he thinks.

Re: I'm afrayed . . .
Welcome. I also began to recognize that the doctrine of agency that I feel was so repeatedly force fed members my whole life was stripped away from me. As I recall, losing my agency started in primary where I was ‘encouraged’ to bear my testimony starting with, “I know the church is true.” I did not...

Re: The Movie “Room” and My Struggle
The book was very good (read it last year), much better than the film. It was one of the better fiction reads I've had in a while.

A tithing story
There’s a family in the ward, we’ll them the Browns. Ever since we moved into the ward 10 years ago, Bro. Brown has been in and out of work. The family has struggled, always been on the list of families to help. Their kids have received clothing from different families in the ward. Their house hasn’...

Re: GA Stipend is modest compared to executive compensation
After a week, my husband finally asked what I thought about the stipends. I knew he knew about it (he left a news-link browser open) but I decided to leave it alone. We talked about it last night and he wasn’t pleased about the money. He said he always knew they got paid (I knew too so I believe him...

Re: GA Stipend is modest compared to executive compensation
I spent Sacrament Meeting reading BCC’s two threads on this topic (F&T was truly mind numbing). I was rather disgusted by the comments to both posts. One comment struck me as particularly thoughtful and was ignored by most of the other commenters: This isn’t going to be the straw that broke the came...

Re: GA Stipend is modest compared to executive compensation
This makes me think of my parents. They faithfully followed the church's advice to have lots of kids. And they always tithed on gross. Now, in their retirement, they tithe on their Social Security income. Does that count as tithing twice? Anyway, all they can afford to do in their retirement is wor...

Re: It's time we stop expecting the church to act church like.
One common theme I see among the disaffected, apostate, and exmormon communities is the expectation that the church should act and look like a church. This means that the church should collect donations for humanitarian efforts, feed and clothe the poor, and stop building shopping malls and real es...

Re: Defining a "Crisis of Faith"
Within the term “crisis of faith,” I take the word “faith” to mean belief system, whether religious, spiritual, political, cultural, philosophical, whatever. The crisis comes when a person confronts whether that belief system is valid or not. It can last a long time or a shorter time, depending upon...

Re: Baptism Photo Shoots
I think it's the new way of parenting. I really don't like it, but I worry if I don't participate in it, my kids will feel bad. To give an example of this, I was baptized in 1960, and 40 children were baptized from the stake that night. It started at about 5:00 and went till they finished and kids w...

Re: Illuminating Conversation With My Daughter
What's very interesting, if I just say a neutral comment about cultural Mormon nonsense, all four of my kids will chime in and say how much they dislike Mormon culture, and I don't have to say much. Three of the four have gone to a church school, and we all can agree that Mormon culture sucks. I ju...

Re: Leah Remini documentary
While I agree the church is all kind of crazy, I still don’t think it reaches the level of crazy as Scientology. No one is going to produce a documentary that can’t get ratings. How do you get ratings? Sensationalism. Scientology will beat out contemporary Mormonism every time. The only exception I ...

Re: I Find Myself Hoping Your Plane Crashes
As always, alas has great advice. I was in a really bad relationship in college. It was abusive and I was convinced (sick Mormon thinking) he was the one and we were planning to get married. On a break home I asked my mom if it was normal to wish that my husband would die right after the wedding. Sh...

Re: I Find Myself Hoping Your Plane Crashes
I am so sorry. Words can be so hurtful. I can't imagine the way you feel after hearing that. That phase of life can be very difficult, even without religion bringing even more stress into a relationship. Something that may be helpful. 1. Get some professional help. One or both of you may be sufferin...

I suppose the short of it is that her feelings are not the most important thing to me. They are one of many important things to me, and in this case I feel that her feelings are unjustified and therefore not as important as me finding my self. alas said it so much better than I can, but I’ll just a...

I have a progressive SIL!
So over Christmas my brother-in-law and his wife visited from across the country. I’ve had reason to suspect that of anyone on my husband’s side, my sister-in-law is perhaps NOM, or at least very progressive, but I don't know her very well since she lives so far away. Well, it turns out she is very ...

So we’ve watched the first four episodes and I was beginning to get a little disappointed. My husband never said a word about them, and appeared to me he wasn’t even paying attention. Anyhow, last week he suggested we watch the fifth episode (I was very surprised) so we did, and after it we had a re...

Re: Leah Remini documentary
But is Mormonism wacko enough to deserve it's own expose'? Certainly the history could be exposed for all of the issues and lies (and of course the scandalous sex would sell). Throw in all the money and power while GA's tell young widows to give their money to Mormonism before even feeding the kids...

Re: Bible Archaeology
Surely you have seen the valiant LDS attempts for this industry. There are companies which will give you that scriptural history tour in Central America. You can find places that will make a plaster replica of Izapa Stela 5, the vaunted (and discredited) "Tree of Life" . I have seen places that wil...
