Re: Did everyone survive the holidays?
Overall it was a nice time. The kids had a lot of fun, and I think that's the most important thing. I made a promise to myself that if the conversation turned to politics or religion, I would take a walk. Unfortunately, it was quite stormy, so I ended up pretending to sleep on the couch. Politics ne...

Powers of Ten
I have never been that interested in the science of where we came from, DNA, evolution, etc. It just never interested me. However, my eldest child is very much interested in astronomy, biology/life science so we read/watch a lot of related materials together. I don’t know if it is because I’m not TB...

Re: BoM to be Honored by Library of Congress
The BoM will be honored by the Library of Congress. From the Library of Congress website (emphasis mine): "Books That Shaped America" [2012 exhibition] was a popular exhibition that featured 88 books chosen by Library curators as being representative of the breadth and influence of books by American...

Re: James Fowler's Stages of Faith and You
A great podcast for Stages of Faith is one by Jon Paulien. I don't remember where I originally heard it, but it's located on Bill Reel's site: http://www.mormondiscussionpodcast.org/2015/07/stages-of-faith-paulien-mp3/ The podcast is done from a Seventh-Day Adventist perspective, but it is fantastic...

Someone using the name Wonderment has posted on fMh. I don't go there much these days, so I don't know if it's the same person or if they still frequent that site.

Re: At odds with Religious Community
I like the idea of keeping close friends and family in a small inner circle, but like MerrieMiss, I worry about the kids. Won't someone think about the children?! Yeah, I worry about the kids too. The close friends and family do provide a fairly large group of kids to be friends with in my case, bu...

Re: At odds with Religious Community
And it's not that I consider the abstract concepts within religion as fake, even though I don't believe they are ontological realities, it's that because I don't believe I can't participate in them. This is going to sound like a really negative word, but I don't know how else to phrase it, the drea...

Re: At odds with Religious Community
In my opinion, this has been the final, real-world question in my faith journey. I have a hypothesis that while the theistic God of the monotheistic traditions is not exactly "real" in the traditional sense, humanity might be better off if most people fundamentally believe in "Him". I haven't read ...

Re: As an active NOM, how do you engage the church?
Would it help to view it all as sociological field work? You know, going native and writing an ethnography. I try to do this in sacrament meeting. It helps. The real difficulty is that everyone there assumes you're one of them and unlike the researcher who engages another culture for a definite amo...

Re: As an active NOM, how do you engage the church?
I attend, am active, and hold a calling. I currently teach primary, although I admit it's getting old now that I've done it for several years. I could probably stand it a lot better if I could skip out of sharing time. I hate sharing time. Teaching the lesson is the best part of the three hour block...

Re: How did you find the new site?
When NOM when down I did a lot of google searches for anything NOM and searched exmo reddit a little obsessively. I found out about NOM 2.0 on the NOM subreddit. I don't post much of anything meaningful, but NOM is my sanity check. Sometimes when I'm surrounded by all the crazies, I start to think I...

Re: Explain your avatar choice
I was really terrified to sign up. I chose a name I thought that no one would ever link to me and then I tried to think of a random image. The harder I tried to think of something random the more meaningful everything became. I saw a beautiful bird in the park that day, so I chose a picture of a bir...

Re: Konfession Time!
I bought half a dozen black and green teas from the bulk bin at the store today so I could sample each one. Weird how it gave me butterflies in the stomach to do it. After brewing my first cup, I put the used teabag in the very bottom of the trash and burned the wrapper it came in. Paranoid, I know ...

Re: Marriage counseling?
This is not about marriage counseling, but about seeing a therapist generally. I saw a therapist off and on for a couple years for postpartum depression, knowing I had serious faith problems as well. The therapist was great for the PPD, and generally okay for matters of faith – but only generally. W...

Re: Asked to pray in church
It was a great prayer, and as you said, most people probably didn't hear it since everyone tunes it out. I find most people can't even tell you who prayed, let alone what was said. I've always hated praying in church so a couple months ago when I was asked to pray in Sacrament Meeting, I politely de...

Re: One Ordinary Family's Extraordinary Mormon Transition
I agree, it's great podcast. One of my favorite parts was on Part 2 minute 13-14 when he talks about validating a spouse's concerns and what it takes to have someone change their worldview. " A moment of unease " is how he frames it - it takes a moment of unease when a person is willing to confront ...

The first argument we about the church
The first argument DH and I had about the church was on our honeymoon. We were touring an old church and I said I could feel the spirit. He told me I couldn’t feel it because it wasn’t a Mormon church or temple. I remember thinking to myself, “Who is this person I married?” In all fairness, he was p...

Re: Mrs. Hagoth is reading RSR
This is all I really want. I can live with DH and I thinking and believing differently. We did even whenI was TBM. But I'd like to him to at least have a bit of perspective of where I am coming from.Hagoth wrote: I just want her to have a better understanding of the reasons I can't believe.

It's a great list.
Exercise is important, but for me, more important than the exercise is being in the outdoors. If I can get outside in any weather and get into nature at all it elevates me. Exercising in a gym doesn't do much.

Re: Welcome NOM refugees to NOM 2.0
So glad that this is here. I can't believe how much I missed it. I did enjoy seeing familiar names popping up on other forums, reddit, and in other places - even on some old comment threads on podcasts. I've been trying to think of a new name because I never much liked this one, but whatever. I'm ba...
