Re: Wish me luck today :)

We wish you all the best. This is a step that I really would like to introduce to my wife at some point. I'll let you know how I screw it up so you know how to handle it better. I dont know that I and my wife are at therapist level, but I would be very interested to hear a summary about the k...

Re: "There is No Integrity Left in the Church"

Strangely, the document Bill was required to sign in order to attend his own disciplinary hearing appears to make no mention of a promise to not record the proceedings . . . Below is a transcript of the entirety of the document participants at the disciplinary council were required to sign. See if ...

I probably should list some of the concessions or my ingratitude is just going to make this feel worse: I don't go to the temple much anymore We re-evaluated how we calculate our tithing (not on gross income anymore) I have been able to tell our adult child where I am with belief I have hinted to a...

I have not been able to get out. However, I could imagine that John Larsen is at a point in his faith that talking about the church may not be as emotional anymore. Sort of like talking about an ex-significant other that you have finally moved on from. I do like listening to podcasts by people who ...

Re: Gina Colvin called for disciplinary council

That's unfortunate, I'm a big fan of Gina. But on this, she's absolutely correct, it's such hypocrisy for the church to have outreach and foster ecumenical efforts to other religions, but then excommunicate members who have the audacity to join other churches. What a stupid policy. Hypocrisy and st...

Re: Good article about how to speak to people who believe differently

If you want to actually change someone’s mind, follow the script first laid out 2,400 years ago by Socrates, the founder of Western philosophy. Never one to sermonize his students, Socrates led them through a structured argumentative dialogue instead. He asked them questions. He helped them conside...

Re: Sources for Laman and Lemuel?

Hmmm, I was reading that and thought, "sure ok, Laman, but that could be an easy typo with an A for a U." How many times was he called Laman? Was it really just an isolated typo? But the Lemuel thing is a little more damning. Sam was a pretty common name anyway.

I’ve heard that’s about the best your going to get when in this situation. Probably. I find it hard to be satisfied with this, especially when I read or hear about other stories where the spouse will agree and they can be on the same page. But honestly, in what world is a spouse ever on the same pa...

Which of us are going to step up and take Gina’s place as a voice of reason toward the church? We are running out of vocal opposers who haven’t been excommunicated yet. I am standing up ... and walking out the freakin door. I love both Johns, Bill, Consig, Dan, Gina, and all the others that produce...

I feel you and get it. Personally I have kind of enjoyed the complete confusion when I relate my Mormon pedigree and then explain that i don't believe any of the BS, and no I don't want to participate. The confusion is pretty funny.

I agree then that everyone's feedback loop needs to involve examinations of whether your actions and beliefs are actually getting you where you want to go. Broader question. Is mythology (which is my mind includes unverifiable beliefs or information) a good thing to maintain in general? Is there any...

Sister Nelson: "He wakes up at night with revelation!"
Sounds like a step up from waking with an urge to pee. Younger guys usually wake up with an er... you-know-what.
Maybe "revelation" is a euphemism? Maybe that is why she is constantly alluding to him being 30 years younger?

Re: Prophecy vs. Scriptures

The debate over the nature of God literally came to blows as Bishop Nicholas punched Arias in the face for his heretical views of the non-eternal divinity of the mortal Jesus Christ. Arias lost both that fist fight and the theological debate and was later condemned as a heretic by Athanasius. This ...

Prophecy vs. Scriptures

I read an interesting tidbit about early Christian history the other day. I have been reading a little about the apocrypha and all the books I have never even heard of. I read about the Montanists, headed by a guy named, yup, Montanus. Anyway, Montanus had a movement that was strictly orthodox in be...
