Re: Families Floating in Hereafter

It's also interesting to speculate on the exact mechanism of that separation. Presumably, if someone were to try to make an unsanctioned visit a family member they could not be threatened with physical harm. Is it just too far and you don't get a space bus ticket? Or is it another dimension you can'...

Re: Why does religion exist?

Good discussion. I think it's interesting to think of the question of why people want/need religion separately from the question of why religion exists in the first place, though there is of course some overlap. It can serve different purposes depending on your role in it. But fundamentally, I think...

Re: The Assumptions

It was certainly the case for me that I didn't realize exactly what could be questioned. Or maybe I did on some level but didn't allow myself to really entertain the thought. Maybe it's important that certain fundamental propositions seem "obviously" true because if they are not obvious then they ar...

Re: Identity

I've just recently used the phrase "raised Mormon" for the first time in a couple situations, explaining that my remaining ties are primarily family, culture, and intellectual interest. Like Red Ryder, I find myself using the chameleon approach. I've asked myself at times whether that's an honest an...

Re: Why is the Mall dying?

I stopped going to malls when the video game arcades disappeared. If my local chapel installed a Dig Dug or Bubble Bobble cabinet, that might bring me back to church at least occasionally.

Re: Maintaining Some Degree of Connection

Isn't it funny how we (or at least I) used to talk about the pandemic ending? Anyway, while I didn't attend any church meetings in 2020, I have a couple times in 2021. But never my own ward, only while visiting friends or family in other places. It's interesting to hear typical talks again that remi...

Re: Who thinks they're going to the CK?

He's pretty much all over the place. Maybe if you reach the Celestial Kingdom, you get to choose which god template to follow. And if scripture is any guide, you can change that on a whim as you go along. Petulant child, vindictive based on arbitrary and poorly-communicated rules, genocidal, condit...

Re: Who thinks they're going to the CK?

The idea of designing aspects of a world always appealed to me, but not the part about being royalty or any sort of authority figure. I still have no desire to be in management, at work or in the afterlife. I never felt like I measured up, but it helped to learn that you can make a good case for pro...

Re: Joseph Smith’s brilliance

Another of Joseph Smith's solutions that I always found compelling is the idea of premortal life, and that we all have existed as individuals in one form or another. This avoids the problem of God creating us from scratch and therefore being ultimately responsible for any "sin" we commit due to it b...

Re: Get used to disappointment...

One of the biggest disappointments I've faced is a loss of confidence in things I once saw as foundational and essential parts of my identity. I don't think this site can help me because any solution it offers is undoubtedly based on some of those same assumptions. I was still a little curious to se...

Re: Things to See in the SLC Area?

Thanks for the suggestions. I did the Snowbird tram and some Canyon trails, among other things. I was going to try the church history museum, but it's temporarily closed. If you want to grab lunch with NOMoids, just let us know. I would love to do this, but my trip is at an end. The only time I'd ha...

Re: What are you watching right now?

I decided to give "Lovecraft Country" a chance despite hearing pretty mixed things about it. I couldn't resist it forever, being a big fan of H.P. Lovecraft. The show is all over the place, but it's entertaining if you're willing to go along with the pulp story elements.

Things to See in the SLC Area?

I'm visiting the SLC area this month. I've been there once before, a few years ago. On that trip, I made sure to see the Joseph Smith Sphinx (Gilgal Sculpture Garden). I know Utah has some nice national parks, and I might try to catch one or two of those. If anyone familiar with the SLC area has oth...

Re: Calling Extended

I turned down a calling for the first time ever not too long ago. It's not an easy step to take. This past weekend I got blindsided with a home teaching route when I happened to run into my assigned companion. I was vaguely aware that I'd been assigned a route a few months ago when I got a phone mes...

Re: Truman Madsen and the JS Tapes

I was a fan of the JS tapes, and even more of a fan of Madsen's book Eternal Man . I guess I probably still like that book, just for the attempt at exploring philosophical ideas in a Mormon context. That was something I couldn't seem to find anywhere else. (Sterling McMurrin was also doing that at a...

Re: Witness film. Got your tickets?

I knew that the printer's manuscript showed all of the witnesses' signatures in Oliver Cowdery's handwriting, and some have seen this as evidence that the witnesses never actually signed anything themselves. But I guess the apologetic claim is that they all signed the original manuscript, which was ...

Re: One Month Down. 59 To Go.

Thanks for sharing. I'm sure every ward has at least a few active but nuanced or non-believing members. Probably more than you'd expect. I encountered someone who had been in my ward previously at a Mormon Stories event (this was years ago when they briefly held those) who told me they'd never have ...

Re: Growing Up

I have a friend who is the farthest thing from religious, who recently decided to define what he values in life. Making an actual list. He encouraged me to do the same thing and discuss it with him. I think this could be a valuable exercise in theory, but I find that I have a hard time even thinking...
