Re: Sacrificed his son

One thing I never understood about the comparison, is that Jesus wasn't really permanently sacrificed. His body died and he suffered for sins, but rose from the dead and was exalted. How is that a sacrifice?

TK Smoothie

I remember in Seminary and Institute a couple of teachers talking about being "smoothed over" like a Ken or Barbie doll as a method to scare us about the ramifications of going to anything other than the Celestial Kingdom. As the premise, they used the quote from Joseph Fielding Smith: "In both of t...

Re: Families Floating in Hereafter

I was curious as to the reason God would want to take away your loved ones or break up your family if you are not Mormon. Any thoughts on what would be God's motivation, or if this is a self-serving notion from LDS HQ? This was actually one of the first discussions I had with my ex wife after my sh...

Re: New Apologetic Movie: Witnesses

The biggest question about the witnesses is what did they really see? David Whitmer later claimed that the angel"had no appearance or shape, " and was quoted as saying "Have you never had impressions? Then you had impressions as the Quaker when the spirit moves, or as a good Methodist in giving a h...

Re: Garments and Temple recommend interview

Then after the question, the interviewer must read you a big paragraph on how the church wants you to wear them. This is one of the weirdest things in the temple recommend. They don't give you a card to read about chastity or Word of Wisdom, or sustaining The Brethren, so why do you have to read a ...

Re: Is Christianity Dying?

I think fewer and fewer people will follow Christianity in numbers, but those that do will be more extreme. We see that happening within the Muslim community. The vast majority are more secular than 50-60 years ago, but those young people that are religious are often more extreme in their beliefs. R...

Re: How essential is a literal Adam and Eve story to Mormonism?

I agree with what Hagoth and Thoughtful said. Without literal Adam and Eve and the Fall, there is no need for the Atonement to overcome "physical and spiritual" death. Bruce R Mckonky used this to explain why evolution couldn't have been a tool to create Adam and Eve. Evolution requires a series of ...

Re: How do we bridge the epistemological divide of “I know”?

I remember reading in D&C 46 about "knowing" through the Spirit: 11 For all have not every agift given unto them; for there are many gifts, and to every man is given a gift by the Spirit of God. 12 To some is given one, and to some is given another, that all may be profited thereby. 13 To some it is...

Re: How do we bridge the epistemological divide of “I know”?

I enjoy my brother's approach to this. He was a very successful missionary rising up the position of AP, but during his mission realized the church was just a corporation and acted like any other corporation after seeing behind the scenes in a mission. He left the church shortly after getting home. ...

Re: David and Joseph

This series sounds really interesting Hagoth, I'll have to check it out. Another really good one on Netflix is Wild Wild Country. It's about the Rajneeshi's going to Antalope Oregon in the 80's en masse and changing the town name and basically taking over the city and almost taking over the county. ...

 I’ll bite. What made it one of the greatest conferences of all time, and, name one conference in recent past that wasn’t so great. Since Smokey didn't know about the proclamation he obviously wasn't listening to conference. Just yanking our chain. That Smokey, silly old bear. I don't think it...

Re: Mission rules are now just suggestions.

I remember when we had a new mission president come in and change a lot of rules, one in particular was changing the old music rule of anything alllowed that invited the spirit, to no music at all, not even MoTab. So the missionaries went from listening to Christian rock to nothing. There was a lot ...

Re: Why Intelligent Design doesn't work for Mormonism

I have read a couple of books about Intelligent Design by a LDS biologists. An LDS biologist was an expert witness at the Kitzmiller v. Dover evolution case. I keep seeing the concept of Intelligent Design pop up in LDS conversations and articles. The problem is that Intelligent Design doesn't work...

Re: church opposition to the Equality Act

I knoe that I will get flamed for this but for once, and only once, I agree with the church. I own three homes which I rent. I actually prefer to rent to gay men because they take the best care of the place. They NEVER miss the rent. Young white kids suck for all of the opposite reasons. However, b...

Re: The changing face of LDS INC under RMN...why the rush?

Really cool 1972 vs 2018 conference picture. Really shows the contrast. The white shirt uniform came from a general conference talk by Eyring in early 2000s. He used the symbology of the pure white shirts...that it shouldn't be a requirement, but it was in a way an unofficial uniform and he encoura...

Re: The changing face of LDS INC under RMN...why the rush?

Sorry, it was Holland in a 1995 talk. "May I suggest that wherever possible a white shirt be worn by the deacons, teachers, and priests who handle the sacrament. For sacred ordinances in the Church we often use ceremonial clothing, and a white shirt could be seen as a gentle reminder of the white cl...

Liquor laws in different states are very interesting. I travel a lot and because of that run into a lot of different laws. I always found D&C 46 vs 11-14 interesting.
