Re: I'm here to listen and learn

And why would Joseph marry pairs of sisters if it was simply a dynastic thing? And did he ever seal himself to unmarried boys, which prevented them from getting sealed to women? And did he then pass those boys on to Brigham, John, and Heber? Precisely. And not only that, but the dynastic apologetic...

Re: For those who stopped believing, how *sure* are you that the church is a lie and what makes you so sure?

I too am 99.99 sure that it never was anything but a lie. I haven't read "One Lawyers Case Against the Mormon Church" but I would love to see the claims of church put on trial. Almost happened in England when Tom Phillips tried it, but regardless, my issue is that there are just so very many issues....

Re: Struggling with MFR - trying to figure out how to make it work w/ kids and us

My DW is very much like OP's, a "TBM through and through...no matter what is false about the church, the church is still true" type of person. I don't worry much about the kids. Mine are older and they've grown up know that dad doesn't believe, so they get both sides of the story way or another. No ...

I'm sorry too.

Yes, it does indeed suck.

And you stated it perfectly, linked.

It just freaking wears a person out trying to deal with all sides and keep some form of sanity, let alone any meaningful degree of individuality.

Internet hugs to all!!

Re: Did anyone here get a divorce over all of this?

Realizing I was second place to the Church for my wife's love, and that I always would be, was a huge factor in the decision to leave my marriage. That's where I am, but I don't know how to navigate going from loving and accepting each other as a married couple (not passionately, but genuinely) to ...

Re: How Mormon can you be for your TBM spouse?

Thanks "notforprophet", I appreciate your reply, as I appreciate all that have replied. There's clearly a lot of agonizing going on out there about these issues. I've actually been considering some of the steps mentioned in how much I can "Mormon up", and it creates quite an inner conflict. For inst...

Re: How Mormon can you be for your TBM spouse?

Thanks Malcolm, et al. Some really great stuff here. I find that at times when my very dysfunctional family is particularly dysfunctional I consider trying to Mormon up for DW do she'll have something to be happy about/cling to. But then I get up the next morning to find nothing else has changed and...

Re: New to NOM. Need help.

Totally agree, but I'll play Stan's advocate and offer this: http://stallioncornell.com/blog/a-reply-from-a-former-ces-employee/ The fellow has responders that claim to have been "saved from the evils of the CES letter" (paraphrasing :D ) by his analysis. It's pretty long and I haven't taken the tim...

Re: How Mormon can you be for your TBM spouse?

Excellent responses and lots of good thoughts, thanks all. Yes Dravin, trying to take your approach would almost definitely land me in divorce court, but what is truly sad is that's probably what should have happened 5-10 years ago when this all started. TBM DW tearfully asked then if I wanted to di...

How Mormon can you be for your TBM spouse?

I've been disaffected for so long I think I asked this question some years ago, but regardless, I still don't have my own answer. My DW is very Mormon, which fits with her very rigid personality. Lot's of black and white rights and wrongs suit her perfectly. Our relationship is far from great even w...

Re: "And it came to pass" - evidence for BoM authenticity

The record was an abridgement of records the supposed authors had difficulty fitting onto small metal plates. If the actual author had wanted to make it ancient, meaning consistent with his story, it wouldn't be so incredibly wordy and filled with unnecessary redundancy, repetition, and, of course, ...

Anyone debunked this CES Letter Response?

http://stallioncornell.com/blog/a-reply-from-a-former-ces-employee/ Naturally it's mostly the same ol', same ol', but having not read it all, but jumped around a bit, I see a few new defenses, such as D&C 20 saying JS had received forgiveness of his sins as an 1830 (earlier than otherwise believed) ...

Re: How to have the talk

There are obviously a lot of ways to go about this, as you can see with the great advice here, but if you're at the very starting point with your DH I like the idea of basically going on a voyage of discovery together. For example, if it was me starting this all over with my DW I might mention that ...

Re: Did anyone here get a divorce over all of this?

My neighbor did. She had full support from the ward. I divorced my husband over abuse. He was supposedly faithful. I got major pushback. My thoughts on marriage are simply that it isn't for everyone. For various reasons, I just believe that some people shouldn't marry. I'm one of them. I think chil...

Re: Another shot at Runnels CES letter

Besides, Mr. Phelps, if all of this really is just hunky dory, where are the General Conference references to any of these issues? If it is all so freakin' innocent, why don't we talk about them? Seems the Brethren could fairly easily clear up a few misconceptions in Conference and we could all go ...

Such an ironic title for the lesson. No kidding. This actually gives some of the real reasons for Marsh's apostasy, but also references the milk strippings story. https://history.lds.org/article/revelations-in-context-doctrine-and-covenants-thomas-marsh?lang=eng&_r=1 Then there's Wikipedia: https:/...

Re: "Gimme your wife" test of Heber Kimball

Poor Heber? I don't think so. Vilate didn't like polygamy (Helen said her mother had already seen the misery it brought, or some words to that effect) and almost any decent father would not only not want to share his wife, but certainly would not give up his "ewe lamb" of a 14 year old daughter to m...

Re: MIL: Sherri Dew says you're lazy and just want to sin

I love the double standard concerning doubt. If it's an investigator who is doubting say the Catholic church that doubt is good. Mormons wouldn't dream of telling said investigator that they should restrict their questions and investigations to talking with their priest, the Bible, and the catechis...

Re: Disgusting Primary Manual story that sets unrealistic expectations

This is a further insulting story since a long list of authorized Sabbath breakers is sanctioned by the LDS church. I seriously thought Jesus was going to head your list. Exactly. He made a point of breaking the letter of the law to show that that was not what was important. Yes, the powers that be...

I'm not worried about him reconverting me to the faith, but I'm very interested in hearing how his research led him back to the believing path when for so many the research tends to lead people out the door. I would be very interested in that as well. Please do post the update. Personally, I'm alwa...
