Moving on?

This might be a weird place to post this but it seemed the right spot to me. I don't know if I ever did an introduction on the new NOM... I've been part of this community a long time now. I've never been a prolific poster but, including old NOM, I believe I've been around for close to a decade. I be...

Re: Soundtrack of the NOM

This is Me Never heard this one til the Oscar's performance last night. Got a little dusty in our living room. Watch this version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLFEvHWD_NE . Have tissues handy. P.S. Keala Settle (The bearded lady, Lettie Lutz has mormon ties. :D ) That was very cool. I love Hugh...

Re: Mormons don't believe in Jesus

Totally fair Jeffret, I appreciate what you're putting down. Personally I don't care if Jesus existed or not either. I do find that I still care how one is able to justify their beliefs based on the framework of their declared philosophy which I believe you are exploring here. Depending on how many ...

Re: Is God the father circumcised?

*snicker* this title had me doing a spit-take :) I vote yes. God the Father, being an exhalted, resurrected man would almost definitely have been circumcised in mortality, right? I assume that on all planets where the true religion was practiced that the one chosen penis look would be enforced?? Con...

Re: Mormons don't believe in Jesus

This has been an interesting and illuminating thread. I often wish in these sorts of discussions that we could all sit down and enjoy a coffee or a beer and discuss this stuff face to face. Going back and forth in text has some pros but too many cons for my taste... I appreciate the response Jeffret...

Re: Morality?

I think maybe you're coming at the question backwards. You state that acting immorally or unethically can make us feel 'bad' and that, in and of itself, maybe isn't a good enough motivator. But the BoM also states 'men are that they might have joy' and that is what we're all desperately seeking. We ...

Re: Mormons don't believe in Jesus

There is scriptural support for the original Apostles having authority to designate a repentant individual. John 20: 22-23 "22And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: 23Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever s...

Re: Mormons don't believe in Jesus

Interesting stuff Palerider. This whole question as to what does and does not qualify for repentance, who can make any declarations on it and how these judgements affect one's ability to participate in the congregation is clearly something religion has debated for a long time but you cite some thing...

Re: Mormons don't believe in Jesus

Now, a better example than the bike story would be when the kid wants a bike and Dad is realistic about the idea that working for pennies will never get her a bike. All she would have to do is ask and acknowledge that she can never do it by herself. Save the frustration of working for pennies and t...

Re: Some of your favorite movies

Sometimes I don't even enjoy these movies that much but they stick in my brain and I'll find I'm thinking about it weeks later. Interesting that you say you don't "enjoy" movies that have this effect on you. I find myself generally choosing my favorite movies based on how much they stay in my thoug...

Re: Mormons don't believe in Jesus

I hate the argument that Mormons don't believe in Jesus for many of the reasons already touched on (including by yourself Jeffret) but I'll try to flesh out my position. I'll start by saying I agree with everyone's criticisms of Mormon hierarchy, mormon interviews, mormon positions on sex (missionar...

Re: Some of your favorite movies

I always find this question difficult to answer cuz movies can fill a wide variety of niches. I love weird, funny movies that my DW often doesn't appreciate as much but I can occasionally get my kids to appreciate like: Hot Rod Hot Fuzz Anchorman Talladega Nights Scott Pilgrim vs the world But when ...

Re: Truth? Reality?

Reality doesn't care about perspectives. I understand this 'perspective' (see what I did there ;) ) and share it to a large degree but I think it may be shortsighted. What is reality from the atomic perspective vs the celestial body perspective? It seems that perspective can in fact change how the ...

Re: Is belief a choice?

Not an Anti-mormon video What do you think? Is this guy "choosing" to believe? As far as whether we are slaves to certain parts of our brain, I love the analogy described by Jonathan Haidt. Our brains are riders on elephants. Some of us have better trained elephants than others but that elephant is...

Re: Is Mormon sentiment changing?

No I don't think so. Mormonism has always been viewed as sort of a mixed bag IMO. A lot of people for our entire history have viewed us as nice but weird. Hardworking but naive. Reserved but sexual deviants. Anyone who's ever done business with a mormon will tell you good stories and horror stories....

Re: Why bother for change?

So I wonder why some spend so much energy trying to get the church to be more inclusive or responsible. It is still false so what’s the point. If it marries gays in the temple that stil does not make eternal marriage true. Tons of things are not "true" that make differences in people's lives. I thi...

Re: Distilling Criticisms

Much like Emower mentions (while certainly some tongue in cheek I find they do hit the mark) I can see the argument against your criticisms by a believer. This can probably be folded in somewhere that you've already mentioned but I don't see it clearly stated. For me it gets distilled to: The organi...

Re: Church Influenced My School Upbringing And I Didn't Even Know It

Yep. 3 films in particular were burned into my mind as a young person that I have never quite shaken in adulthood. Intriguingly (to me anyways) 2 were LDS productions. Cipher in the Snow The girl who gives blood to her injured brother and than asks the Dr "When do I die?" Not even sure what it's cal...

Re: Teaching gospel doctrine on The Fall this week—thoughts?

Sounds like you already have some great ideas. I love the book Good Omens which has the following quote (not Garden of Eden Adam, this is a different one): And there never was an apple, in Adam's opinion, that wasn't worth the trouble you got into for eating it. I'd love to explore the idea of trans...
