Re: Staying Married for the kids

Each marriage is different. Each person/family is different and will respond differently. Some couples will be able to co parent. Others will not. While one person can be committed to working together as co-parents, the other may not. So much anger and hurt are often hand in hand with divorce, the a...

Re: nom/AMA with John Hamer

If the AMA is still going on, and you feel up for it John, how do we (NOMs, former mormons) build community? What do you see as ways to build community (if there are ways outside of joining the CoC or another faith)? Many former mormons struggle to find community after a faith transition. Seemingly ...

^ both good episodes -
As an alternative, the conference smack up (the talk about refugees) was pretty great. I like that they can recognize good ideas when they see them, no matter what the origin.

Re: Scheisse is About to Hit the Fan - My Minor Son is Probably Having Sex w/ GF

I trust in the conversation with the son, you guys are talking about consent as well as safety. The landscape of consent has really changed socially in the past 30 years. I have been discussing consent with my kids. Being really drunk doesn't mean consent (for example), and that was not always seen ...

Re: I feel so alone

I’ve never felt like I socially fit in at church and I don’t know which is worse – feeling like I don’t fit in because I am damaged in some way or feeling like I don’t fit in because I see something everyone else doesn’t. It’s weird. I love the song in "Into the Woods" that no one is alone. Can pos...

Re: Gender roles

What I observe in mormon relationships (and others) is a lack of communication about expectations (re gender roles). So many assumptions challenge a relationship. Who will change the diapers. Who will make enough money to provide. Who will fix the sink. Mormons (and others) are not taught skills to ...

Re: What if I just don't like weddings?

Weddings and funerals are community events (cue the sunrise sunset song). They're touchstones to build relationships. So depending on the person and the relationship, it can be important to to attend. Siblings. Parents. Children. It depends, of course, on how much it costs. If someone gets married i...

Re: Talking out loud - not sure if it helped or not

Frankly, I think most people can use someone to talk through things with. I'm a strong advocate for seeing a professional. No matter where you are with mormonism or a faith transition. There is nothing like upending your life to really re-evaluate everything, relationships, beliefs, etc. Having some...

Re: Updated Document

So glad to read you are doing well, Document. You have been through a lot.

I admit, despite my amicable divorce, your position would be very difficult for me. So bravo for you for being able to move forward.

Re: Family Search is a see through sham

Even though I'm still alive, my data is on family search (searchable through google). I've asked for it to be removed and this is a great reminder to ask again. Family members are very enthusiastic about genealogy. Personally, I like learning about ancestors and their stories (one of the benefits of...

Re: Facebook and Divorce

Divorce can be really complicated, even in the best of circumstances. The way it usually works is that it does break apart into family lines. But I have aunts who divorced my uncles that I'm still friends with. They are amazing women and were in my life for years (and influenced me). It's not that I...

Re: Still here

Welcome back! Was the divorce a hard decision? Not to get too personal, or more personal than I would like, but yes, it was the hardest decision of my life. Just thought about that for a moment, and yep, still the hardest decision. Maybe leaving the church was also up there, but much easier. I was ...

Still here

I never got around to introducing myself on the old forum, despite joining in 2009 (2009?!?) I kept thinking I would post an into at post 1000, then 2000, but it never seemed like the right moment. In particular, I wasn't an active mormon, and hadn't been for quite some time. But I have been around ...

Re: Explain your avatar choice

My avatar used to be women in archery, but I changed to a photo of Alexandra Kollontai, whose name/pseudonym I've been using on former mormon interweb locations since 2000. She was the first female ambassador to Finland from the former Soviet Union and a prominent Bolshevik feminist. Stalin ...
