Former reporter Rod Decker's new book

I started reading the sample kindle download. So far it is a pretty interesting read on Utah political history.

Re: Is NOM going the direction of some other online groups?

Perhaps Mormonism is in the early stages of a "Glastnost" and "Perastroika".

Re: Burned over district & Joseph's search for truth

Daymon Smith wrote a set of books on LDS church history. I found the book that talked about the beginnings quite interesting because I learned things I had never known (things I had been taught were uniquely Mormon, but turned out to be common beliefs at the time). Volume 1 Volume Two A Volume Two ...

Re: New youth program being defined

I know its a crazy thought. But non of the material released so far says anything about weekly meetings. It does talk about planning activities to support the youth and help them gain experience. But there nothing specifying how frequently these activities have to occur. What are the odds that this...

Re: New youth program being defined

The principles taught in this effort for children and youth represent a higher, holier way to encourage the rising generation to follow Jesus Christ and apply His gospel in all areas of their lives, Its just weeknight church. strengthen the rising generation’s faith in Jesus Christ and help childre...

Re: Are youth really leaving?

I can tell you that in my wife's family, there is no sign whatsoever of rebellious youth. They are like the Army of Helaman. My own young kids show a tendency towards religious scrupulosity as well. Time will tell.

Re: New youth program being defined

I have already decided that my boys and girls will get supplemental instruction in cool outdoor things from me without a church program. I call it "Dad scouts". Basically we will go out and do things I already like to do. Skiing, mountain biking, camping, watersports, hunting, navigation, and maybe ...

New youth program being defined

Looks pretty vague. In my experience members struggle without specific standards and tasks being defined. This could get interesting. I predict YM will still be playing basketball in the gym every Wednesday. Kids choosing their own goals instead of it being spelled out probably won't work too great....

Re: Thought Experiment 1: Correct Faithful Worldview/Paradigm for BOA

Since this thread has devolved and is not accomplishing anything, and we are now on a separate trickster God debate, by those making one an offender for a word, and not thinking through the other descriptions and words used of the point to be made, I am abandoning this thread. See you on other thre...

Re: Thought Experiment 1: Correct Faithful Worldview/Paradigm for BOA

OK, here's my response to the thought experiment. Sorry, I'm in a hurry and only had time to scan the instructions, so I may not be following the rules. The only way I can see to harmonize all of these issues in a way that makes the Book of Abraham true would be to assume that God intentionally cre...

Re: Thought Experiment 1: Correct Faithful Worldview/Paradigm for BOA

Let us define restorationism. Are we going with the version that came before Joseph Smith in the reformed baptists, the scottish enlightenment and english trained ministers such as Edwards, Hopkins, Stone, Campbell, Scott, Crawford, or only JS' later adoptions of their doctrines? It is a sad state o...

Re: Nephite Interpreters

The contradictory quotes sure are confusing. Almost makes me wonder if JS came up with different props that evolved over time or this whole interpreters thing was just like everything else, a retrospective evolving narrative. Were these giant glasses that only fit giant nephites? Regular looking 19t...

Re: The effects of Africa, Asia and South America

If the church is around in 100 years it won’t look anything like it does today. Just like it is unlike the church of 100 years ago. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk This was a mind blowing realization I had when we visited a really old 19th century chapel on my mission. It hit me like a pile of b...

Re: How would Joseph have known about the Comoros Islands?

In asking prolific mormon document collector John Hajicek about the comoros map connection he says there just wasn't any map available contemporary to Joseph and his area of operations making the link unlikely.
