Re: Previous Callings you've had?
Mission stuff: ZL AP (that was eye opening) Young adult ward: Gospel doctrine teacher Stake mission secretary (back when they did that stuff) After marriage: Elders quorum president YM deacons advisor Scoutmaster Bishopric counselor (Worst calling ever besides Bishop, first testimony cracks here) St...

Re: Currently denied by Bishop to give a Baby Blessing...
This sucks, but at the same time you are probably ready for that shift anyway. At times I fantasize about the time my Bishop finally decides I'm out as it would allow me to move on and finally give me the excuse to stop although family relationships will surely suffer.

Re: Preparing a defense
Your situation is similar to mine after it became apparent to the ward leadership that I had gone rogue. When the exec sec texted me about an appointment, I emailed the bishop directly and told him I'm not interested in meeting on an ecclesiastical level at this time but would be happy to take him t...

Re: Priesthood Blessings
I was just reading here about how Patriarchs used to charge a fee for patriarchal blessings and even healing blessings. They used to undercut and compete with each other.

Re: "These issues have all been debunked"
Humans make decisions based on emotions and not rational thought. The biggest motivating emotion used to control mankind is fear. Being LDS, the thought of not being the special chosen elite from the preexistence and being totally wrong on so many philosophical levels after so much devotion and sacr...

Re: Who is our Grizzly Bear now?
So now we have to make several distinctions when an apostle speaks: Speaking as a prophet: inspired doctrine Speaking as a man: opinions, some well-formed and some crazy Speaking as a bear: even embarrassing to other apostles We still lack a precise way to determine which option is being used when ...

Re: Not by commandment or constraint
The coffee and tea interpretation of section 89 is interesting because it doesn't explicitly call out those drinks in the revelation. I'm convinced that interpretation came directly from Samuel Underhill, the Owenite leader in Ohio who gave a sermon a few years prior (1829) that was likely a common ...

Re: Priesthood Blessings
After my faith transition I decided to experiment with priesthood blessing terminology in receiving blessings. My home teacher, a fine humble "worthy" retired high priest came to home teach. At the beginning of the visit I asked him to provide me a blessing, but instead of the typical pre-blessing c...

Re: Freewill vs. Agency
After reading a bunch of Scott Adams (dilbert author) stuff, I'm starting to believe we have no true agency and that we are just "moist robots" who only make choices as part of an evolved set of emotional reactions based on survival instincts.

Do you remember the thread we had going on the old site where the "NOM" JW guy let us Q&A with him? That was really fascinating and fun. I would love to see that resurrected. Perhaps you could invite your lunch-mates to join our new forum for that again.

Please ask about the recent leak of financial information and if the church will ever be fully financially transparent with donations. Simple, easy question.

Re: Martin Harris in sunday school
Today in GD class it was a lesson on Martin Harris and the lost 116 pages. The teacher was asking what we knew about him. After a lengthy back and forth I decided to mention that he fell away during the Kirtland Safety Society crisis and that after the succession crisis he went on a mission to Engl...

My only regret is not doing it sooner. I should have been more willingly to trust her and more open with her. Amen to this. Do it sooner rather than later. Most people distance themselves emotionally from the church over time after they've determined it isn't true. You want to go through that proce...

Re: What happened to the standing high council in Zion?
According to the Wiki you posed, the Standing High Council was dissolved when they were expelled from Missouri in 1838. Originally, the standing high council, under the direction of the First Presidency, was in a de facto supervisory role over the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, which was a travelin...

What happened to the standing high council in Zion?
Shower thought this morning. It seems early on in the church during the Ohio/Missouri era, Joseph had kind of a theo-democracy thing going on with checks and balances over leaders like the US Republic. Common Consent was taken seriously as a democratic vote, and there was a set of leaders equal in a...

Re: Should I accept a calling?
This is where mormonism makes it hard to be halfway in. You can turn down the calling, but it might complicate your possibility of recommend renewal later if you desire it. At the same time if your mental health precludes giving this much time and effort to the corporation, then perhaps letting that...

It should also be noted that southern Iraq had a beautiful and fertile marshland up until Saddam Hussein drained it to evict and punish the Shia people in the late 1980's.
