Re: Extended Family Relationships

I absolutely believe from personal experience on both sides of the fence that soft shunning in mormonism is a real experience. The awkwardness between ardent believers and former believers is tangible. We are living and breathing cognitive dissonance and the cause of discomfort to those still inside...

Thread-jack Alert! There's another Angry Postate T-Shirt idea. A nice, BLACK shirt that says "I Am The Cognitive Dissonance" I'll wear that one when not wearing the shirt that says: "I Am An Empty Chair" I'll buy one!! [emoji869] Now that I think aboot it a bit, the "I Am" statements are unnecessar...

Re: Gems from open-mic Sunday

That's funny, our bishopric counselor gave a very similar testimony about a friend that expressed doubts recently. He bore his testimony to him while helping him with a project and felt that he wasn't there to offer physical help but spiritual help instead. I'm pretty good friends with this counselo...

Re: Mormon Stories Interviews RFM

Excellent work, Consig. I have been thinking a lot about what you said about the Bible stuff in the BOM being the smoking gun. It was the first thing that spooked me, and this was in 1991 on my mission. Yeah, that was my final undoing, particularly the direct New Testament quote in the BoM from Pau...

Re: Breasts in the news

So, if the woman is found innocent, and the attorney successfully sues the prosecutors, do you think that will lessen the stranglehold the Corp has on Utah government and Utah laws? And when can we say it has let go of the throats of the govt? I mean, I think changing the liquor laws loosened it a ...

Re: Onslaught of Church ads on internet

Yep I have seen a few pop up as youtube ads. Very vanilla "kids were confused about all the churches we attended before" vibe targeting young families.

Re: Breasts in the news

Story seems really strange. First off, who in their right mind likes drywall dust on their bare skin? Second, who filed the charges or made the complaint? If I had to guess, it was the step children's Mom who heard about it from the step kids. Interesting case. Third, look at the picture that accomp...

Re: The challenges of attending church

In my case the key to survival is reading my kindle books during sacrament meeting and getting out of there as soon as the closing prayer ends. I find that 1hr only attendance keeps my wife from having to play the single church widow with our kids and it provides me with just enough time listening t...

Further watering down of the missionary program

Apparently the missionary handbook is becoming less rule based and more watered down "principle" based. I just hope by the time my kids are of age for missions the program will allow them to wear normal clothes and be all service based 2 month ventures. https://www.thechurchnews.com/global/2019-11-1...

Re: Lunch with my apostate Dad

Instead he repeatedly tells me "don't poison the family". Seems we always think of the perfect thing to say after the fact. There's questioning as a rhetorical device in order to make a point and then there's questioning for understanding. So, I wonder if a number of heartfelt questions might have ...

Lunch with my apostate Dad

Went to lunch with my Dad this week. He has been out of the church for decades and enjoys his free Sundays a lot. Now, you would think he would be satisfied that I have come to know the truth and have some form of empathy that I am trapped by my marriage and children. Instead he repeatedly tells me ...

You can apply things like "secret combinations" to a myriad of modern organizations but in reality it was ironically all about the 1820's anti-masonry movement.

I always laugh at chiasmus in the BOM as evidence of hebrew origins when the same is used by the Strangites as evidence for Strangs translations.

Re: Kings, Messiahs, and Sex

Good find! We also get a bunch of parallels of the united order in the Owenites that operated secular communal living experiments in the Kirtland area at the time of the early church. In fact the Isaac Morley "family" was a religious manifestation of that communal experiment based on Sidney Rigdon's...

Re: Gods All The Way Down

This doctrine became really problematic for me on my mission in the Southern US when the biblically educated would whip out Isaiah 44:6 "Thus saith the Lord the King of Israel, and his redeemer the Lord of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God." I eventually just pu...

Re: Book Review of "This is My Doctrine" Part 1

Good review. This is one of my favorite books in my journey of discovery because Harrell does a good job of laying out in a systematic form all the ways the doctrine has evolved and I found a few jaw dropping gems I had never considered. I love how he discusses the development of the satan character...
