Re: NPR broadcast this Saturday

Just listened to the episode on This American Life. I took great pleasure in the producers questioning of Eric Hawkins and the discomfort caused when she kept pressing him about whether the former practices were wrong and he had to keep dodging them. It was a well done program.

Re: Louisa Beaman sealed to Joseph before being baptized in the church???

I think they should call for a general re-baptism to make sure people know they are in the COJCOLDS rather than the Mormon church. Such a baptism would work as a census so they could find out how many "members" care enough to take action ensure that they remain members in good standing. Maybe make ...

Re: Elias and Elijah identity problem

From the FAIR article: Joseph Smith was not the only one to understand Elias in this sense Some critics have seen Joseph's ideas above as completely ad hoc: but, he was not the only one to understand Elias in this sense. Alexander Campbell, a noted American clergyman, wrote an attack on the Book of ...

Elias and Elijah identity problem

Today in stake conference Elijah and the spirit of finding dead ancestors was discussed. The first thing that popped into my head was Elijah and Elias being referred to by JS as distinct individuals where scholars understand that Elias is simply the greek version of Elijah of the hebrew scriptures. ...

Re: Temple Clothes

It is sad that one can learn more about the temple clothing symbolism from freemasonry than any temple president. Typical question: what is the symbolism of the string tied from the hat to the robe shoulder? Temple president: Oh that just keeps the robe up. Probable Freemasonry answer: Something dee...

Re: Compelling witness youth video

That was painful, I couldn't finish the whole video. Same apologetic responses as previous with a fresh format and videography update. Also, nice to see the continued "Us vs Them" tribalism. Some boy sees the book and says "My pastor says that book is fiction" and we instantly jump to a courtroom w...

He claims to be an independent mormon unaffiliated with any sect. But he was ordained by a Strangite priesthood holder as a young man, and grew up in Voree Wisconsin in a house on "Mormon road".

Re: John Hajicek vs. The Deseret News

He has been fighting these false charges of stealing a copy of the first edition in Missouri for a long time. It does make me wonder if the church sees him as a threat due to his inconvenient discoveries that counter narratives or they don't like having a minority mormon outbidding them in so many a...

Re: Compelling witness youth video

One observation. Rather than the young prosecutor man saying the book is a fraud, he calls it historical fiction. It seems to be a subtle way of shifting the argument by sleight of hand away from total fraud to choice A is historical fiction, choice B is go by your personal feelings, and you never g...

Compelling witness youth video

This reminds me of the cheesy seminary videos I grew up with in the early 90s. https://www.lds.org/youth/video/compelling-witness?lang=eng&cid=facebook-shared A few observations. The use of the term "revelation" instead of translation by the defendent girl. Subtle narrative shift for innoculation pu...

Re: Friday Fun: Who Wrote the Book of Mormon (and How)?

To further clarify, the BOM does contain some campbellite type teachings, for example being against infant baptism, but there is so much more New England and New York theology involved in addition to the anti-masonic stuff to say that it was all Rigdon's doing or prove that he had a hand in it. That...

Re: Friday Fun: Who Wrote the Book of Mormon (and How)?

He also agreed that you can't pin it to one source, but a conglomerate of different sources. He also said Alexander Crawford is very important to mormon origins. Do you mean Alexander Campbell? Rigdon could have added Campbell's restorationist theology to the BoM, is that what he meant? Nope, Alexa...

Re: Friday Fun: Who Wrote the Book of Mormon (and How)?

John Hajicek claims to know who wrote it based on his aquisition of the 1837 Oliver Cowdery book of mormon with notes in Cowdery's handwriting that say where/who certain parts were "stolen" from. I don't think he will release pictures until he publishes a book or documentary and I also wonder if re...

I love that this is a bullet point: "When factoring median income for these Faith Crisis respondents, the Church incurs an estimated tithing-revenue loss of $281 Million over ten years (at $2.5 million per chapel, that represents a theoretical loss of 112 chapels)" The sad part is that as much mone...

I'm really impressed with admission that they have no idea of the actual 19th century geography...which was settled, absolute knowledge. WAIT are they cancelling the Comurah pageant because they're admitting they have no idea where it really was? Interesting thought, but I think the heartland dweeb...

This is hilarious. Apparently the heartland model believers have been criticizing the Saints book saying the church has a conspiracy to bury the heartland model. So much so that Matt Grow and team had to respond. https://history.lds.org/content/saints-and-book-of-mormon-geography?lang=eng&fbclid=IwA...
