Re: Whatever happened to the POX?

Yeah, I avoided the disgusting reasons and throwing God under the buss. Sometimes I just don’t want to get started on how disgusting church leader can be. If I get started, you will find me screaming on my soap box, then bursting into frustrated tears. Not trying to egg you on. I will say that what ...

Re: Technological advances BEFORE 1820?

Lol you can’t beat Mormon apologists that way. I remember being one. The orthodox story is that every advancement pre-1820 was to set the stage for the Grand First (Second,Third,Edited for a new audience…….etc) Vision. God had his hand on everyone from Christopher Columbus through George Washington...

Re: Technological advances BEFORE 1820?

The first thing that popped into my head was the printing press. I did a search and found this page of inventions in the 18th century: http://www.theinventors.org/library/inventors/bl1700s.htm#:~:text=The%20United%20States%20issued%20its%20first%20patent%20to,the%20gas%20turbine.%20Early%20bicycles%...

Re: Under the Banner of Heaven TV show

I think it is that the people prone to violence go looking for justification in the church history. They want an excuse and then blame the history. If I understand you correctly, only the people who are prone to violence would use church history to justify it. However, it is likely that if those te...

Re: Under the Banner of Heaven TV show

I may have overstated what Krakauer and the mini-series is saying - you may be right, maybe the message isn't so much that the violence in Mormon history inherently breeds violence in its followers, maybe the message is that for those prone to violence for whatever reason, they get a little nudge i...

Re: Under the Banner of Heaven TV show

But I will also say this - while the miniseries gets much right about Mormonism, by far and away the vast majority of Church members are non-violent. The hypothesis that violence in Church history breeds violence in modern Church members is specious and unsupportable. That a weirdo family used viol...

Re: Under the Banner of Heaven TV show

I just watched episode 3. Was the execution of the penalty a little different from what was actually done? It has been a long time, and I only went through a handful of times pre-1990 so I am not sure. I thought I remembered something a little different.

Re: Unbundled Corruption and the LDS Church

How does nepotism play into this? I'm thinking of Holland's son getting the gig as university president without a CV that justifies that. Or the numerous family ties that help get callings or church employment. Maybe the currency of corruption in the church is not always money. I'll listen to the po...

I also heard it all the time. This type of talk prompted me to do my best to get released as ward clerk. The training will always say it's because the tithing funds are so sacred. I have a feeling that the excuse is more of a psychological justification that conceals a different motive that the lead...

Re: BYU-I Censors Anatomy textbooks

My high school in rural Idaho showed the uncensored diagrams, similar ones anyway. To my knowledge, no one in my very religious community had any complaints. This instructor at BYUI is an embarrassment to all educators. I think people like this are so fixated on the porn-panic displayed at church th...

Re: Under the Banner of Heaven TV show

It's not that the church is forbidding people watching it, more like character assassination of Krakauer. He's a hack, he's a novelist, not a historian, he didn't do his homework, he's making up his own version of history, he has an axe to grind with the church and UtBoH is a vehicle for packaging ...

Re: FSY and good, better, best

All that said, FSY straddles that fence. You've got a limited number of years for eligibility. FSY is still going to be more of the same though. This might be a case of artificial scarcity. Yes, there are only so many years you can go to FSY, but is it worth it? Like you mention, it's more of the s...

Re: Mormonism's Galileo Moment

I would be fine doing an audio recording podcast but the live video broadcast format doesn't appeal to me, to be honest. I hope you do a podcast at some point. Frankly, the work you and jfro do could be its own podcast. You'd have years of material. I saw someone over on reddit who mentioned to the...

LOL. Holland will redouble his anti-LGBTQ efforts after this. Perhaps even cancel future BYU graduations.
Or maybe not let students walk if they've already received their diploma.

FSY and good, better, best

So this plea from church leaders to get kids to FSY camp was posted over on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/exmormon/comments/ubl5o8/oops_they_said_it_out_loud_again50_of_the_youth/ Like many of the commenters, I was hit hard by the notion that kids are being pressured to give up sports and academi...

Re: End game - the great rebrand

The difference between the "rebrands" of GBH and RMN is that GBH really understood branding and marketing. That was always his thing. RMN clearly does not understand how to reach people. He's good at hobnobbing with the pope or Chinese officials back in the day, but he doesn't understand how to conn...

Re: Plagues of Egypt

Another thing I thought of, that might make the story more believable, was there seems to be a major math error throughout the early Old Testament. As in the number of escapees from Egypt was an impossibly large and would leave evidence. But say, if it was really 1/12 of that. Now, if I remember co...

They don't know that we know that the whole is made up of the parts. To be fair to them, as a TBM I willfully ignored that the whole is made up of the parts. I was happy to ignore ignore the problems with a weird mental severance clause that allowed me to jettison whatever did not coincide with rea...

If the goal of the church were to find truth, this information would be welcomed by all. Not saying that everyone would agree, but this would advance the effort to understand what happened. Very well done.

Re: Need help with quotes abut BoM historicity

My problem with the “Inspired translation” or “inspired imagination” label is that it discounts the actual gold plates! It discounts the "Witnesses" also. Believer : "But what about the witnesses?!?!?!" Fluffy Apostate : "Witnesses? They were witnesses of source material that was never used to prod...
