Re: Who has seen the new Magic Rock™ video?

The attempt to commonize Joseph as just being another magic rock user founded in the culture that came from Europe, glosses over the fact that all of those people were basically fraudulent fortune tellers with their "crystal balls". Just trying to make a buck or get a cheap thrill from telling the f...

Glad things are back to normal. My wife kept asking about the site since I tell her a lot about what goes on here. I've become her way of lurking. :)

Re: Thoughts on tithing

I confronted her about this and it did not go well. I admit I did not handle it well. We have had other marital issues in addition to this. She brought up the D word and things have been pretty bad for the last week. She has been looking into what we could get if we sold our house. For the first ti...

Re: The Artful Dodger of Mormon Apologetics

I had an unwelcome visitor in my dreams last night. Ted Bundy said he wasn't lying when he said he had never killed anyone.............since 1989.

ETA: Daniel needs to remember that before one can lie to someone else, they first have to lie to themselves that they're not really lying.

Re: I think I want to be cremated...

Only members who were endowed in life may be buried in temple clothing..... .....persons whose blessings have not been restored after excommunication or name removal may not be buried in temple clothing. This is such a BIG BLUFF... What non-lds funeral home is going to give a tinker's damn whether ...

Re: I think I want to be cremated...

Having just buried my father a couple of weeks ago, I can tell you that certain states, counties, countries have different laws and requirements regarding what preparations have been made on dead bodies that are being interred. The church is probably just trying to accommodate the laws in a given ar...

Well you know right away that it's apostasy when a woman makes any sort of authoritative claims. The truly righteous wroter her off immediately because they understand that you can't receive the signal if you don't have the antenna.

Re: The 'transfiguration of Brigham Young' and the New Testament

But I think that when you see how quickly a story can go from an everyday event to a miracle in 13 years and from there spread across Mormonism to having people claim to see it that weren't even there, it makes me wonder how the story of Jesus changed in those ~60-70 years before the gospels starte...

Re: The 'transfiguration of Brigham Young' and the New Testament

If groupthink 13 years later can cause Brigham Young's speech to church members to evolve from a typical debate speech to literally changing in sound/look/appearance to Brigham Young, what does that tell us about the New Testament gospels all written 60-70+ years later? ......it certainly explains ...

Re: Newly disillusioned...

Seems like everyone who recognizes the LDS church's integrity crisis, (I no longer call it my faith crisis because I'm not the one with the problem, the church is) has to go through the process of reestablishing their life paradigm and moral values framework. I would only suggest one does not throw ...

Re: Dumbest FairMormon quote ever? Horses and chariots

I've heard this explanation from Fair before and found it very satisfactory. In my own mind I bent this hoop even wider with the thought that the word "chariot" is just a borrowed name that the Hebrew/Egyptian cultures had aqcuired from the diasporan explorers that were scattered to the East Indian ...

Re: Materialism In LDS Culture

I think this issue is one of the main reasons the book of Job was written. Job had more than just wealth. He had a great family, good fortune and health. All of his friends regarded him as favored by God because of his righteousness. When he lost everything, the automatic assumption by his friends w...

Re: Biblical christianity/ attending the Mormon church

I was raised by a mother who highly valued honesty. She had a highly accurate B.S. meter. She always told me that if I didn't tell the truth things would be much worse than if I had. Especially if she found out about it which was very likely. When I was 15 years of age, three of my friends and I dec...

Re: Dating the BOM and Zedekiah

Wait....I'm a little confused. If Lehi left in 600 BC, which was 3-4 years before King Zedekiah was placed on the throne, then wouldn't it be impossible for Lehi to know about Zedekiah's reign? He wouldn't have been there for the commencement. Therefore Zedekiah shouldn't be in the BoM at all, right...

Re: Dating the BOM and Zedekiah

Just to add to the pot... Nephi states that the brass plates contained many of the holy prophecies until the commencement of the reign of Zedekiah: "And also a record of the Jews from the beginning, even down to the commencement of the reign of Zedekiah, king of Judah." So in order for the brass pla...

Re: Dating the BOM and Zedekiah

But my new question is: Did Lehi leave in 600BC as 1st Nephi 2:4 and the whole BOM suggests or sometime around 597-5, as the wikipedia chronology (which must have some scholarly basis) suggests would have been the actual first year of Zedekiah's reign. Some poor apologist out there wants so badly t...
