Re: Reasons to resign
Number 1. The church is phony and dishonest. Number 2. I resigned because as long as you are a member of record, the church usurps to itself the privilege of dealing with you how they see fit and on their terms......not yours. I'm a hunter, thus the following analogy. The church is like a bull elk t...

Re: So Many podcasts, so little time.
I do a mixture of different podcasts as well. Depends mostly on whether I think I can learn something new. I doubt that there are many folks in that 65-85 age group that are watching these but the effect on 15-45 year olds must be devastating for the church. Leadership must be turning themselves ins...

Re: Another Utah man kills family
That may be the way it is in some town in Utah but in other parts of the country the police and other organizations are prepared to help women and children in abusive situations. They can be sheltered. As a part of our "tithing", we now donate to a local shelter for abused women and children. They d...

Re: Another Utah man kills family
Interesting that the "in-laws" frequently seem to be involved in these cases. President Spencer W. Kimball used to say that after a couple were married the in-laws needed to butt out and let the couple solve their own problems. Which I agree with totally. In-laws are not experts or professionals. An...

Re: 60 Minutes this week: LDS & SEC
I just did a search and found this as well as an article from the SLC Trib.
https://www.saltlakemagazine.com/lds-ch ... 0-minutes/
I'm looking forward to watching this even though I'm not a big 60 Minutes fan.

Re: Gratuitous violence in the BOM?
The thing to ask is if there is any archeological evidence for the great wars that are fought in the BoM. It would be interesting to see how they get around that.
Godless
Watching this fictional, dark themed Western on Netflix called "Godless". The main antagonist (deep sociopath) is a character who, as a young child, was part of the Fancher party that was massacred at Mountain Meadows. He was under 8 years of age and so spared of death but then raised by one Isaac H...

Glad to see NOM back. Thought maybe the quasi-cult had sabotaged the website.

Re: Gratuitous violence in the BOM?
Does anyone know if that "If god commanded it" exemption clause was in the original text of the BoM? Or was it something added as part of the "re-editing" the occurred over the JS years to update the book to his evolving theology? Just checked. Original text reads the same. https://bookofmormoncent...

Re: Gratuitous violence in the BOM?
It's interesting there's no polygamy in the BOM; like the other thread Red started about predator vs opportunist. I guess we really don't know when JS first started thinking about polygamy; I'm guessing at a pretty young age if the stories about his bible study are true, but he did not write it up ...

Re: Gratuitous violence in the BOM?
I'm of the opinion the story of Shiz and Coriantumr was inspired by the Legend of Sleepy Hollow and the headless horseman. It was written in 1820 and is considered one of America's first classic spooky/horror stories. Quite popular in the culture. Joseph probably observed the general public being no...

Re: Joseph Smith “sexual predator” label?
I'm trying to remember the term used by the church for young men who have had multiple sex partners before their mission. If I recall, leadership drew a distinction between a young couple in love, who had "made a mistake" and a young man who had been "predatory" in his relationships with young women...

Re: Historical details do not carry the saving power…
The problem these idiots truly don't understand is that covenants and ordinances performed on earth by men, have no intrinsic saving power. In Christ's time the "ordinances" were burnt offerings and animal sacrifices. Mark 12:33 reads: "And to love him (God) with all the heart, and with all the unde...
Re: Alcohol?
I tried alcohol a few times as a teen. Nothing good ever came from those few times.
My younger brother is alcoholic and I've had to watch what it did to his life. Not a fun movie.

My in-laws, who fancy themselves as dyed-in-the-wool TBMs but are in reality cafeteria Mormons in a big way, would do better to call it the "Convenient Path".

I've always thought "Covenant Path" is nondescriptive.

Re: So... my friend was just promoted to General Authority
Does your friend have a white ceramic bowl and pitcher on display in their home? I haven't been inside his house since I learned about the sacred artifacts. He doesn't seem like the type to put them on display anyway. The ones I have seen (in use at the time) were a nice quality stainless steel. To...

More temples...lots more temples.
They're like Walmarts now.
Mormonism: The Walmart version of salvation, only more expensive. Cheap religion at a high price.

Re: What's the point of Oaks sucking up?
The idea of sucking up to leadership MUST be reinforced to inferiors so that when it's Oaks' turn, no one will dare give him grief. It's the "get in line" principle. "I did it....you do it." This is the way the church operates and avoids the huge messes created when members gave Joseph Smith crap on...
