Re: Elder Gong: “Please don’t post that photo…”

Family should always come before anything else. I have LGBTQ in my family too, as well as one of my kids. They come first. You are either comfortable to be seen with them, and take pictures with them like a normal family, and treat them as a person, or.... "just be quiet about it..." → leads to a ...

Re: Elder Gong: “Please don’t post that photo…”

So, as a public figure, Elder Gong has an image he needs to maintain. You and I may not agree with his image and I am pretty sure that his son gay does not agree with Elder Gong’s public image. But the gay son isn’t going to earn any brownie points with his father by doing something that might dam ...

Re: Elder Gong: “Please don’t post that photo…”

My gay daughter might agree with you. I asked her once about “gay pride” and she turned up her nose like I had asked her opinion of Trump. I of course questioned that, and she said that gays have to respect the feelings of straights just as they ask to have their own feelings respected and she said ...

Re: PewResearchCenter - new report

As a super quick note, the Mormon specific figures are from 2014. I am really hoping they update those post COVID, although it's a small sample size and just one poll so I wouldn't draw *too* much from it. Mormons are statistically insignificant. There's just not enough of them to get meaningful ...

Re: GA's past double standards

Back in the 90's someone computed the average number of children the GAs had. Those leaders were still preaching the benefits of big families and that you shouldn't limit the number of kids that God wants to send you. I have a relative who followed that counsel through that time period to have 9 ...

Re: The American Religious Landscape in 2020

I imagine some portion of jack-Mormons still identify as Mormon but don't consider themselves very good Mormons. These may still identify as Mormon on surveys because they consider that is the religious group with which they identify. This is different, of course, from who active members of the ...

Re: The American Religious Landscape in 2020

Thinking about it personally, I suppose I wouldn't answer as atheist, though I'm certainly a member of the unaffiliated. Haven't been to church in years now and have no intention of participating in any. I may grace the grounds of a temple next weekday for photos celebrating my brother's wedding, if ...

Re: The American Religious Landscape in 2020

As far as grouping, I think this survey just lumps atheists together with everyone else in the Unaffiliated category. At a lower percentage, Mormons are lucky they get a separate grouping themselves. Yes, the Unaffiliated category contains a wide range of different beliefs, atheists being just one ...

Re: The American Religious Landscape in 2020

Which is the unlikely one? All three look highly unlikely. Demonizing birth control isn't going to work. Mormonism "works" when it maintains a certain level of tension between its communities and "The World". If the tension is too low, there isn't enough unique about it and there's no reason for ...

Re: The American Religious Landscape in 2020

Thanks for the re-welcome! Just popping in the share this latest round of statistics. The white evangelical Protestants are certainly one group I'm plenty happy to see decline. I can only cheer them on in those efforts, "Best speed". And it's not too bad if traditional Protestants have some ...

The American Religious Landscape in 2020

For number nerds, the PRRI has updated their ongoing reports about religious affiliation in America. See The 2020 Census of American Religion . There are lots of different breakdowns across different aspects. Some interesting points about the Mormon Church: The reported number of Mormons appears to ...

Re: Are Bible stories Fables?

More myth than fable really, but yeah. They're certainly not any sort of literal history, not factual, as we would use the terms today. They connect into actual history in a few places -- very few -- but only in a very mythic way.

Re: Suicide

My elderly father-in-law passed away six months ago. From suicide. He was having lots of health issues and trying everything he could to alleviate the torment, until he found the thing that worked. All of the family was very sad to see him go but accepting of his choice. We miss him and wish we ...

Re: Is anyone talking about the new proclamation?

But, what the members didn't realize is that the PotF was primarily a political document, to be used in its anti-gay activism and court filings. Multiple sources have identified BYU law professor Richard Wilkins as the author. Wilkins devoted much of his life to trying to influence governments ...

Re: Is anyone talking about the new proclamation?

One thing you have to credit Hinckley for (in spite of his other faults) is his ability with PR. He knew how to create buzz. The PotF needed buzz, at least inside the church, and he delivered it. He was certainly better at it than any previous or following president. I haven't paid much attention to ...

Re: Is anyone talking about the new proclamation?

Those of us who were paying attention way back then remember that the initial response to the PotF (otherwise known as the Croc-Proc to some of us), was pretty ho-hum. Everybody looked at it and said, "Yeah, okay, we already know all that. Nothing to get excited about." But, what the members didn't ...

Re: What are you doing to protect your family against the virus?

But there are some things we can't handle as individual citizens. National defense is one of them, for example - gone are the days when we can all grab our muskets and chase the Redcoats out of town. We have to have a government to organize and support national defense. FWIW, there was never really ...

Re: mormonism has no theology?

It's a vague statement that doesn't necessarily mean anything. It probably refers to the fact that there is no immutable, unchanging doctrine or doctrines within the Mormon Church. But, that's really a human thing, applying to humanity and churches in general, so it's not really an indictment of ...
