Re: A Uchtdorf rise to the Prophetic throne is reasonable.
For decades, or more, members have long dreaded, or anticipated, the ascension of the next president to the grand seat. The reality is that it's rarely made much difference. By the time the individual ascends, he's so feeble or so bound by the tradition of those that came before that they do little....

Re: A Uchtdorf rise to the Prophetic throne is reasonable.
Depends on what you mean by "restore". Or what he would restore it to.
I don't think there's much that can be done to halt it's steady decline.

Re: Thom Harrison and "Visions of Glory"
How does Utah's criminal Attorney General Sean Reyes figure into this Visions of Glory stuff? See this link: https://www.sltrib.com/news/politics/2023/11/27/ag-sean-reyes-helped-intimidate/ https://www.printfriendly.com/p/g/DhnJbf Very heavily. He's right in the midst of all of it. He's engaged in ...

Re: Lester Bush, author of "Priesthood Ban" article dies
I'm not entirely sure about the relative influence of everyone, but given all I've seen I assume those at the top of the hierarchy have the only real influence.
And I was curious about the basis for your argument, which does actually have a fair bit of validity. You may be right.

Re: Lester Bush, author of "Priesthood Ban" article dies
Snipping to line things up a little for my comment. as we know it's what "the prophet" thinks that makes the difference. <snip> what significant changes did Russell Ballard contribute to? Since it's a pure hierarchy, the only person whose individual actions matter is the one at the top. Since Ballar...

Re: Lester Bush, author of "Priesthood Ban" article dies
I would submit that Bush impacted the Church far more significantly than Ballard did. I'm curious how you arrive at that assessment. I suspect that if you asked people at Church on Sunday, hardly any of them (if any) would know about Lester Bush's work, much less who he is, but everyone would know ...

Re: Thom Harrison and "Visions of Glory"
I just stayed in nursery with the kids and didn't go to their oh so very important meeting. It was about porn. For a few years every special meeting, particularly the priesthood-only ones were about porn. They just couldn't get enough of it. I wouldn't be surprised. There are some people who are re...

Re: Thom Harrison and "Visions of Glory"
All of the lessons regarding wife were along the lines of: they're so much better and more spiritual than us; we need to help and cherish them more. I also grew up feeling like the priesthood was for men but that women probably didn't need it. They were already good enough to do things without havi...

Re: Thom Harrison and "Visions of Glory"
Another one came to mind. At first I discounted it. Because I couldn't think of anything that specifically taught it. But then I recalled that's how some of the most insidious ones are taught. Quietly, without ever actually stating them out loud. Sociologists explain that it's the unspoken taboos th...

Re: Thom Harrison and "Visions of Glory"
The specific lessons in how to be a “righteous” man include things like “putting your foot down” and “wearing the pants” and WOW, “punishing your wife” as if you are her father and she is 5. This, in all of its many facets, was definitely woven all throughout the patriarchal experience. It's consta...

Re: Thom Harrison and "Visions of Glory"
I'm not sure this other thing really fits into the question, but it is a thing that definitely annoyed me for many years. The Mormon patriarchy teaches that an ordained man has some particular ability as a healer, through priesthood blessings. I always found that such a farce. Most women, because of...

Re: Thom Harrison and "Visions of Glory"
One of the things the Mormon patriarchy taught me is that a man's worth is determined by how high up the hierarchy he climbs. His spirituality and his position before god are determined by the height of his calling. This idea is generally held in any kyriarchy or hierarchy, but it conveys the additi...

Re: Thom Harrison and "Visions of Glory"
On a personal level, one of the things that the Mormon patriarchy taught me growing up in Utah was that a woman or girl controls a man or a boy's sexual response or behavior. A girl who dresses a certain way will necessarily induce sexual desire in a boy and he has no control in how he responds. Thi...

Re: Thom Harrison and "Visions of Glory"
Gabriele Falloppio, an Italian anatomist born in 1523, claimed to have been the first person to discover the clitoris. We can easily assume that many, many people had discovered it aeons before that, but they had some very notable differences from him. This is certainly related to the concept that ...

Re: Thom Harrison and "Visions of Glory"
I'm going to re-order alas's comments a little to comment what I want to first. My mother calls men who are very heavy in this need to dominate and have power as suffering from testosterone poisoning. And too much testosterone does increase aggressiveness. So, see why testosterone poisoning. In a di...

Re: A Uchtdorf rise to the Prophetic throne is reasonable.
Here it is in a nice, handy chart: http://www.threestory.com/apostles/ Statistically speaking, Nelson isn't likely to make it more than a couple more years. Oaks seems to be reasonably healthy for a 91 year old, so it's likely he'll ascend to the throne. Finally, he'll be able to make the changes he...

Re: Thom Harrison and "Visions of Glory"
I also find it fascinating how conversations can veer off in unexpected directions that take them miles from the original topic. I also confess to being one of the worst perpetrators of said veering. Eh ... I'm one of the biggest offenders at that. I know it really bugs some people, so I try not to...

Re: Thom Harrison and "Visions of Glory"
All human cultures have been ruled by men. In human history we have never had one where the ruling power was held only by women. This is well outside my area of expertise or anything I've studied, but I have read that there have been matriarchal societies, or societies ruled by women. So, yeah, I d...

Re: Thom Harrison and "Visions of Glory"
So, no, men are not dominant because of patriarchy. We have patriarchy because men like to dominate. I remain unconvinced that patriarchal structures have no influence or that we can wholly exclude patriarchy from any causality. My observation is that some of these behaviors and desires are greater...

Re: Thom Harrison and "Visions of Glory"
Women don’t equate the control and domination of their partner with eroticism, so women don’t sexually abuse near as much, and when they do, it is usually motivated by different things. This is pretty clearly driven by patriarchy. Men pursue control and domination because the patriarchy tells them ...
