Re: Who should be able to enter the temple?

It's private property. They can make the rules. Now if the church were communally owned and operated, i would lean towards the congregations that operated the local temple as making the rules that worked for their community mix. High density communities might be more strict and communities where LDS...

Re: "The church gets more right than it gets wrong"

this argument presupposes an agrement on determining right and wrong. Religion is the ultimate appeal to authority. And the crux is we disagree about the authority. In the end, they subscribe to divine command theory. And if they argue that they don't, then god is no authority for determining right ...

Re: If the church were to admit and apologize...

there used to be a step about recompense where possible.

Refunding my tithing and mssion expenses would be a good start. They can keep the fast offerings. I'd feel a lot better toward the church if they did that.

Re: Film Review: Captain Marvel

it lacked tension to carry you from scene to scene. Nor was there any particular emotional core to the story. The supporting cast was quite good.

It fits neatly into the MCU as a whole and tidies up a few things. The end credit scenes were good and bode well for Endgame imho.

Re: "Why do you always leave after Sacrament Meeting?"

you know, i think it was just as bad or worse 50 years ago. i didn't like church any more as a 4 year old than i do now. Mid week primary was terrible, stultifyingly stupid content. the 3 separarte meetings were awful and interminable. I hated the primary programs as a kid. i have no interest in per...

i think it was another if his power consolidation moves he trumped up as needed. See also the origin of the priesthood, first vison stories and their timing and so on.

if he could wrap it up in the trappings of Biblical related restoration, all the better.

Re: Divorce Advice?

A few things I've seen. Debt management. No matter what the divorce decree says, it always falls apart on debt. Especially early on. Because the loans likely have both signatures on them, they'll pursue whoever signed, decree be damned. Close every joint account you have. Take out new individual loa...

The question is more about when the embodied individual saving messiah doctrine arose. Technically all jewish kings were annointed ones as part of the coronation I think.

The best example is Qantas flight 28.
Hmm. The flight path has quite a significant curve AS PROJECTED ON A FLAT SURFACE. I wonder why that might be. Hmm.

Re: CES Letter -- It's impact and what would you change?

The CES letter is a very different exit path than the one I followed. It is very much abiut problems within mormonism. As it is addresed to someone inside the Church Education System, that's reasonable. Changing the content of the letter would in many ways be to change its audience too. Which would ...

not in a structured way like that. I see it more likely as a leadership schism with a charismatic popular apostle making a liberalized move against the entrenched conservative senior apostle ascendency.

Re: Bill Reel v. Apologist Jim Bennett

The church pays for FAIR. Directs the efforts. Yet FAIR must disclaim speaking for the church. At which point I no longer care what any of them say or assert. They say themselves their answers are non authoritative. There is no reason to pay them any attention. The apologists are speaking only for t...

The standard works are not what tbey are purported to be. And there is no mormon church without their validity.

So there is nothing to stay for no matter what they change. All they change is window dressing if there is no truth in tbeir core claims

a creator god vs a moral god

I was reading a Jewish commentary on quora yesterday. Among the many things he covered: Abraham as another polytheist or the first monotheist. He felt Abraham's claims of the most high god requires comparison to other gods in order to be most high. Though generally Abraham is argued as the first mon...
