Re: Fight The New Drug

My posts were not to refute your points, but to show your post's subjective and non-supported points. You're welcome to your worldview, but don't assume we share it or agree with the premises your view is based on. To discuss these kinds of topics effectively with those who don't share your view, yo...

Re: Fight The New Drug

Activating parts of the brain repeatedly can lead to addiction which distracts us and spends our time away from building, worshipping, and creating a world to be enjoyed outside of staring at sexual content and self gratification. Spending sexual energy on inanimate images or explicit content destr...

Re: Fight The New Drug

I understand a religious objection to porn. But if you're talking to an audience of divergent views, you need an argument that reaches your audience. The religious argument has no weight for me since I disagree with the premises the argument is based on. Do you have a non religious argument? Ftnd re...

Re: Debunking D&C 113

Both positions strike me as faith claims dressed up with other trappings that aren't reliant on more demonstrable things.

Faith in Joseph Smith

Faith in Isaiah

I don't think either proposition has evidential merit. But faith, sure.

Re: Unwillingness to Apologize

You can't claim you receive revelation if you have to apologize. It means you were wrong. Being wrong will further open you up to deep pocket lawsuits. Worse than a payout, lawsuits open you up to discovery, where all kinds of things can come to light the church wants to keep hidden. And might feed ...

Re: HOW did Joseph Smith write the BOM?

I don't particularly care how he did it. It is clearly not what the church portrays it as nor as they credit it. That's enough to be done with it. The details are flecks of history. Historians can figure it out, I have better things for my limited time.

Re: How do those of you in mixed faith marriages raise your kids?

If your spouse/partner will allow the emphasis on choice and respecting choice, this will solve itself. Kids who want to go will, those who don't may choose something else or nothing, or partial attendance at say sunday school or YM/YW for the social aspects. My kids disliked it all and chose other ...

Re: Debate night live thread!!!!!!

I think the claim that the attacker has to replace the suspect worldview with another is an obfuscation. While one generally makes an attack on a worldview from within a different worldview, the attack contains the premises of the worldview the attacker finds preferable. So the attack itself points ...

Re: Why are temples going Moroni-less ?

To make the temples more mainstream. Moroni on top tells people that's who we worship. Really, people think that because of the statue--probably not most, but still. It's been removed at least once to meet zoning ordinance as I recall. It improves resale value because the next owner has less re-bran...

Re: Why does religion exist?

I would suggest reading Big Gods by Ara Norenzayan. And tertiarily, The Righteous Mind by Jonathan Haidt. Tied into this is the Hyper-Active Agency Detection behavior of humans. It's theorized this is an evolutionarily advantageous behavior that detects threats (agents) from unseen but present signa...

Re: Saturday Sabbath

When the week starts and ends is entirely arbitrary and is simply a cultural artifact. In Europe for example, all the calendars start on Monday making Sunday the 7th day. My preference is to start the week on Monday and so I set my electronic calendars to work that way. It's a pretty standard featur...

Re: An Abrahamic test

Dan Simmons in the Hyperions books (first is great, it goes downhill after that) has a Jewish character posit that the test is not God testing Abraham, but Abraham testing God. Abraham has no intention of sacrificing his son, but that if God is worthy of worship, he will provide a solution to the im...

Re: Now that we know Mormonism is a cult what do we do?

For my purposes, just walk away and disengage. Anything else tends to generate more attachment issues. And i'm finding there is some wisdom in the Buddhist views of the perils of attachment. I'm not in total agreement as there are attachments I value and pursue. But an attachment (positive or negati...

I think he's performing to his masters. The current leadership is more by command and less nuanced than Monson or Hinkley. Monson may have been more an issue of what penetrated his mental fog in his last few years.

I don't expect there to be anything. I like the idea of just being over with it all.

Re: The best way to study Truth.

Truth is a very loaded word, and is imho weak when applied to the burglary example. What you want in this case are facts you can take action on. of your listed sources of available evidence, I would weight them as strongest to least strong: C which should show what happened, and provide suspect lead...
