Re: Faith and Family Awakening & Narcissism
I like your description. I was in a stake conference when it suddenly hit me that, to doubters, the church acts like an abusive significant other. The weird thing is that it's like that for some, but for others it really works.

Dang, they actually let my comment through moderation this time, too. That was short lived.

Here's another LDS abuse case.
https://www.ksl.com/article/46541841/jury-finds-ex-bishop-guilty-of-trying-to-sexually-abuse-teenage-boy Former bishop convicted of molesting young boys. Yep, it happens in the LDS church. It looks like the Church responded quickly and appropriately in this case- no cover up. So, that's good. But, t...

Re: Article on Early Returning Missionaries
Heck, I WISH I would have come home early due to my doctrinal and testimony concerns, which loomed large. I came home kind of shell shocked, I think. Leaving early may have made me look at some things a bit differently- maybe even really honestly ask myself to do a hard evaluation my beliefs. As it ...

Oh, hell no!! That makes me want to swear. I'm so, so sorry. That is just so $$$$ed up!
I keep thinking the angry part is gone, but then something brings it back and it stays for months.

Re: Liberal/ Conservative Dance
I didn't swing hard or far, but I have definitely shifted from right toward center. My Mormon friends at work would call me a liberal now, but mainly because now I care about the earth, gay people, etc., And am much more self aware of my own tribalistic patriotism. I also married a Canadian- that pr...

Re: Mormon Rumspringa
Plenty of Mormon kids do. I was one of the idiots who didn’t. That hits awfully close to home. I went from my teen years, to a mission, to college, and to temple marriage with a perfect record of church attendance. It's to the benefit of the institutional church that I did not have any conception o...

Re: Mormon Rumspringa
I think you'd have a lot more Mormons leaving. If kids could participate in "the world" without guilt, even briefly, I think a lot of them would never come back. Leaving Mormonism would be a lot easier than leaving the Amish community, I think. When an Amish person participates in Rumspringa, I woul...

I just read Nelson's conference talk.
F***. It really was just as bad as everyone was saying. I walked through the room when my wife was watching that one, and I could tell it wasn't going to be one I wanted to hear, so I took my kid outside to play. DAMN. That was so bad. I didn't think it would be THAT bad. Man, that boils my blood. T...

Re: Non-scientific research - you can participate too!
Interesting. One thing to consider- I bet there's a LOT more volume of material to quote from from GAs than there is from Jesus. Take that for whatever it's worth.

Re: Alternate Family Night Lessons
This is a great thread! I really enjoyed the first story, and I will look up the second one shortly. I hope these ideas keep coming! My wife has agreed to do some form of modified, inclusive FHE with me and the kids (still too young at the moment though), and I really want to give them chances to fe...

Re: Hook, line and creamer
Although when it comes to coffee, garments, etc I really don't think that would be a big GenCon announcement, but something they'd quietly release as a 'policy change' through Deseret News as opposed to having a church leader talk about it on video. I don't think they'd even do that. I think they'd...

I just caught some of Bednar's talk- I think he may be inadvertently encouraging a lot of "uncorrelated" learning and personal revelation.

Re: JW's Manual Seems...More Reasonable on Chastity
Thanks for posting this! I've spent a lot of time learning about Jehovah's Witnesses, mostly because it was interesting to analyze a similar (in many ways, at least) religion without being personally involved. It helped me see I wasn't going crazy. That policy is really interesting! I bet we'd have ...

Re: Intervention
Wow, that sounds horrible! I'm so sorry! It's weird to think that people in all sorts of other religions see "apostates" the same way... I so damn sick of Mormonism. I just want it all gone from my life. I am sick of trying to have a simple conversation about any meaningful topic without it somehow ...

Today's deseret news article actually mentions it! https://www.deseretnews.com/article/900063943/church-lgbt-gay-lesbian-policy-mormon-baptisms-blessings-apostasy.html President Russell M. Nelson, who succeeded President Monson as church president, was president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles...

And then, we watch the Lord move upon the President of the...
