Alternative uplifting primary/fhe lesson ideas for mixed belief family?

Hi, Since the crap hit the fan with the pandemic, my wife has been trying to do a primary lesson weekly with our 3 year old. I've been trying to be supportive, but it's made me think more about what they are actually teaching him in church. Up until this year, he was in Nursery, and I kind of let my...

Re: thinkers

My very least favorite Mormon quote of all time: “There is no need for you or for me, in this enlightened age when the fullness of the gospel has been restored, to sail uncharted seas or to travel unmarked roads in search of truth. A loving Heavenly Father has plotted our course and provided an unfa...

Re: Can anyone give a better translation of this Spanish?

It sounded like a much bigger project than I realized, and it was basically for a side note on a blog post. So, I told Kishkumen not to worry about it. I did finally publish the post, though.

Wow, alas, thanks for sharing! That was a fascinating read. You really have a broad experience with how we got to this point. Sometimes I wish I could ask my mom about the ways the church has changed in her lifetime, but it has always felt too awkward. Now I think I will.

Re: Is NOM really "middle way" to any extent anymore?

I got on here because I got really tired of the other angrier boards. I assumed it was pretty much what it claimed- a group of nuanced believers. It sounded really appealing to discuss things with that kind of a group, even though I'm not a believer. But, it seems like a lot of you are kind of like ...

Re: New blog post- "But My Experience Was So Good!"

Yes it was interesting how RC, the Legion, and the Catholic Church all apologized profusely after the truth came to light, and even apologized for the way they handled it all (even though they apparently continued to handle similar things quite badly, even up until very recently). I also recently sa...

Re: New blog post- "But My Experience Was So Good!"

So, if a boy died white water rafting Orin a car accident on the way up, the BSA got sued. But if a girl was injured, the church was ultimately liable. They are too damned cheap to insure the girls for any kind of activity, so the girls got to die of heat exhaustion in the south Texas desert, while...

Re: New blog post- "But My Experience Was So Good!"

And...I'm was resentful for not getting to participate in the scouting program. When I was a YW leader, I fought for better than a 5 day girl's camp. White water rafting, high sierra camping, etc. I was shot down every time. Nope. Girls stay local and have their week of camp. Monday through Saturda...

Re: New blog post- "But My Experience Was So Good!"

Maybe it comes down to personality type or one’s loyalty to truth over people/organization. I definitely think some personalities do better in the church than others. It seems to be true of Regnum Christi, too. I think, aside from sexual abuses, that the same sorts of people who are damaged by the ...

Re: New blog post- "But My Experience Was So Good!"

I think of Boy Scouts. I really loved Boy Scouts, for the most part. I loved the campouts, the projects, and especially summer scout camp and high adventure trips. Even though my ward's troop was pretty dysfunctional, I really have great memories of it. I was actually really sad that the church bai...

Re: New blog post- "But My Experience Was So Good!"

Thanks for your kind words, and thanks for reading! My intent was really not to say the group as a whole was bad... I hope it didn't come off that way. My main point was really that a group- any group- can be really good for some people, and yet still do harm to others. It's not all good or bad. Do ...

New blog post- "But My Experience Was So Good!"

I wrote a new post, and it's one I've been working over for quite a while. I wanted to convey the idea , in a non-threatening way, that when we have had really good experiences in the church, that it can be very easy to negate the traumatic or damaging experiences of others. If a person has had good...

Re: Can anyone give a better translation of this Spanish?

Thank you a ton, but I don't want to give you a huge project! I wasn't sure how easy or hard this would be. If it's a pain, I can go with the google version. It's not super critical. Please only do it if it's not a ton of trouble (or if you find it interesting and worthwhile, haha). This is going on...

Can anyone give a better translation of this Spanish?

I'm working on a blog post about a Catholic group called Regnum Christi. It has some parallels with cultural problems I see in Mormonism. One woman who was a consecrated member for decades gave a really poignant description of one of their doctrines- the leaders, and especially the founder, must be ...

Re: Skipped 2nd Hour with DS

Ha, my toddler loves nursery. He also likes to wear a "nice shirt". I'm worried about what will happen to him, too. He goes every week, and I usually attend sacrament twice a month. I don't know how much longer I can take that, though.

Re: Trip to SLC this summer

I second the outdoors activities! There are a ton of awesome places to go, at varying distances from Salt Lake. All the national parks are fantastic (my favorites are Zion and Arches so far). You can get to great, beautiful hiking in the mountains just to the East of Salt Lake. There are trails up e...

Salt Lake may be the least Mormony part of Utah, though. But, yeah, Swig and other similar ones seem to be popping up all over in the more Mormony parts!

Also, I'm still not quite sure what all my family's dysfunctions are... But there definitely are some that the church issues exacerbate.
