Re: Whats your favorite mormon koan?

"Consider the Abrahamic Sacrifice story. Consider how Joseph Smith and early prophets married teenagers. Are there any requests that you would not do if the prophet asked you to do it?"

Re: Asking for a friend: What are the resources for women married to a TBM? Podcasts, friendships, groups, etc.

There is a Facebook group called "Another Testament of Marriage" . It's for the faithful side of mixed-faith marriages. I tried to join it, but I was politely rejected as the apostate side of a mixed faith marriage. I did not want to be quite as duplicitous as I am with my temple recommend. The "Upl...

Re: A reminder about sexual predators

In related news, my wife got her temple recommend renewed over Zoom last week. The signed temple recommend was mailed to her a few days ago. This is, seriously, a good model for worthiness interviews because this puts the authority figure under secular scrutiny as much as the congregant under eccles...

Re: I have an ally!

My DS that returned from his mish almost a year ago now, has been having a faith transition. He read the CES letter and is currently reading "Saints" and following the footnotes, which he says is quite an eye opener. Congratulations! It's a great relief to have family members who will engage with y...

Rick and Morty understands philosophy and logic better than what I usually hear in Gospel Doctrine class. I should pick up a Rick and Morty necktie for my return to post-pandemic church.

Re: Opening Up Church Again

It feels like the church needs to compete with the restaurants and businesses. In a way, I think the LDS church does need to compete with restaurants and businesses. A bunch of states have functionally opened up. I got a haircut this week. If I can do more than just get takeout, LDS leadership know...

Re: Theodemocracy in theory

This just sounds like autocracy with extra steps. Maybe Joseph Smith would have done an admirable job of being in charge of something like this, but a lot of his time seemed to be take up with sealing three dozen women to himself. Brigham Young's long reign might have approached theodemocracy, but i...

Re: If I could ask them one question . . . Come Follow Me, Lesson 20

This is an excellent idea. After the seer stone was acknowledged a few years ago, the apologetic explanations have been an attempt to normalize geomancy. But, this is a material claim, and we are requested to sustain Russell Nelson and the other apostles as prophets, seers , and revelators every six...

Re: Horrifying Initiatory Story on Reddit

The church has improved the initiatory to be fully clothed with not presentation of underwear involved. The real question is why this could not have been the case from the beginning. And, that the change was made with no announcement. Members found out about it via the LDS rumor mill. When I first w...

Re: How do we bridge the epistemological divide of “I know”?

He really enjoys when talking to members bearing his new testimony. "I took Moroni's challenge and asked God if the things in the BoM were true, and God answered. I now know that the Book of Mormon is not true. God told me through the promptings of the holy spirit. I know Joseph Smith was not a pro...

Re: Conspiracy thinking and the church

Yes, this is accurate. The Jehovah's Witnesses and Seventh Day Adventists feel the same way. I have had the chance to speak with members of those faiths and see some of their missionary and "new member" religious instruction. And I'm pretty sure that many or most other faiths feel similarly. Joseph ...

Re: Top 100 list of silly Mormon ideas?

39. The necromancy rules for "Shake Hands with a Spirit" set forth in D&C 129 are bananas. Have these rules helped anyone in any faith promoting story in LDS history? Let me note that the scripture states:
These are three grand keys whereby you may know whether any administration is from God.

Re: Hey God, you there? I’ll send you an email.

This sounds suspiciously like the famous 1970 young adult novel, "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret" by Judy Blume. I have not read it because I have never been a teenage girl. I was only interested in teenage girls when I was a teenage boy. Perhaps Joseph Smith and the early LDS leaders should h...

Re: mormonism has no theology?

I have heard the claim that continuous revelation means that the doctrine can be changed. But since it's revelation it is the mind and will of God. This is just the apologetic version of what John Hamer said. It is alleged to be a strength of the LDS church, but it rarely seems to end up that way.

That early Battlestar Galactica was one of the signs that we were the One True Church. What other denomination had a cool sci-fi TV show? Not the Jehovah's Witnesses or the Catholics!

Re: It’s Mock Trial Time! Joseph Smith v. Polygamy

In defense of Joseph Smith: The 19th century practice of plural marriage was presented as an Abrahamic sacrifice commandment for the early Mormons. It was a commandment and treated as a critical part of salvation. The ultimate reason for plural marriage was that God commanded it and the Mormons bel...

Re: Why don’t Mormons Celebrate Easter?

We recognize the import of the Savior's resurrection but we don't celebrate all those heretical Catholic practices that were introduced later. They are a sign of the Apostacy. Except for the egg hunts. They're fun and they provide nourishment so Mormons turn a blind eye to their pagan beginnings. ;...
