Re: New missionary interview questions

So many thoughts but I will start with this: I am truly disturbed that written records go to Salt Lake containing details about what the prospective missionary needed to repent of. Stake Presidents have already had their own lists of questions to cover with prospective missionaries. I once attended...

Re: TBM Family Should be Defensive

So if keeping family members in the fold is priority #1, then they should be taking drastic measures. What "drastic measures" could possibly be effective? I can't imagine any measures that will more effectively keep family in church that have not already been tried. I suppose that faithful families...

Re: New John Gee book about the Book of Abraham

Years ago I attended a fireside which featured a scholar from BYU. I wish I could remember his name. He said that the church has the Book of Joseph scroll and is translating it. He claimed that one of the interesting things revealed in the scroll was that the universe is 3.333 billion years old. (Y...

Re: Humility and Pride

I like this sentiment. I have tried to teach my children how to think , not what to think . One of the best ways I have worke with disagreements in religion, politics, and science is getting others to agree on basic epistemology. "How would be know that one way or another is best?" "How could we tes...

Re: Not This Again

The calendar they are putting out this year is innocuous enough. It's 22 days of New Testatment platitudes, with most scriptures coming from the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew. Then the Book of Mormon is casually inserted on December 17, 22 and 24. This roadblock will probably make this advent calen...

Re: New John Gee book about the Book of Abraham

Joseph identified the papyri as consisting of both the books of Abraham and Joseph in Egypt. The church owns both but no one ever talks about the BoJ. Spoiler: it has all the same problems as the BoA. Interesting. The book of Joseph fleeted past my mind at one point, but I have not thought about it...

Re: Mind If I Vent?

I guess I consider C++ to be my "main" language. I took a couple online community college courses in it, and I have a over 1100 lines of code written for a couple console programs (soon to be combined into one program, I think) that help automate an annoying part of my job. :D It sounds like you ar...

Re: Mind If I Vent?

This is a tough situation and I sure it feels entirely intractable. My wife and I absolutely felt that way with four young children and one mildly on the autism scale. It felt endless when we were in the thick of Primary age children but it eventualy does get easier. As a fellow introvert I readily ...

Re: A sabbatical

Every member of the church should be required to take a one year sabbatical and evaluate their membership. How many would remain active? There is no Rumspringa in LDS culture. Quite to the contrary, a faithful Mormon will go on a two year mission with evern more restrictions on them. Of late, there...

Re: XX Chromosome = Priesthood Ineligibility

Fascinating research. Was there any indication that the Y chromosome might have lead to an expression of some kind of "antenna" that let's them connect with divine power? It would additionally support their theory if they found that a "priesthood antenna" arises naturally in response to other XX chr...

Re: Why People Leave the Church and Never Come Back

For me the answer is quite simple. The church is not what it claims to be. Well stated. We train missionaries with high perssure sales techniques dressed up in the guise of "teaching by the spirit". But investigators are simply not joining the LDS church becaues it is so compelling in doctrine and ...

Re: NOMfrence loosers

Well done, MoPag. The big challenge for those of us that do continue to attend is hearing these talks rehashed in coming months. It wtill be a problem for mixed faith couples where the faithful spouse gets marching orders and the apostate spouse is blindsided by a church injected attitude. Besides b...

Re: Lex de Azevedo on Mormon Stories

As a child I was in one of those stakes that put on "Saturday's Warrior". It was a big event, at least inside my mind. My mother played Mrs. Flinders. The interview was very interesting for all of the reasons that others have stated. Brother de Azevedo had an interesting life and is as faithful to t...

Re: The token gay guy

This was a really convenient set of circumstances for the LDS church. Gay brother of an apostle Believing family was not jerks to him personally Elderly, so no one is asking if he will get married to a woman at this point While he was married to a partner, they broke up and he's back in the fold Sti...

Re: This is my report...

This might be an interesting survey question to ask NOMdom. If you are in the attending but no longer believing camp, to the point you no longer believe the sacrament has any magical power over your salvation, do you still take it for the benefit of your TBM fam and friends, so as not to cause cogd...

Re: New John Gee book about the Book of Abraham

It's kind of annoying that this is yet another book trying to show some legitimacy to the Book of Abraham where there is so little to show for it. I'm not going to read this book. I am far beyond needing to justify my lack of belief.

Re: Non-religious God

Lately, being without a church, I have been pondering the connection between God and Church. God and Religion. Does one need a religion to believe in God? What is God's power and influence outside of a organized religion? You don't need a religion to believe in God(s). Formal proofs about God from ...

I recommend the comic Heart and Brain which daily encapsulates this dichotomy with situations that we all instinctively understand. For example:
