Re: Seer Stone Video

I noticed they used the iPhone comparison. Today I was listening to RFM's Elder Snow podcast and he also brought up the iPhone as an analog to the seer stone. Maybe they should put that thing in an MRI machine and let us see what kind of circuitry is inside. Otherwise a better analogy...

Re: Pres Nelson's BYU Speech Today

It's just like Consiglieri eloquently described, but here it is if you really want to listen. I'm sure there are arguments happening on BYU campus right now as students and teachers try to justify the status quo to the careful skeptics among them. I will certainly give credit to Russell Nelson for c...

Re: Terryl Givens steps into the BoA ring

By Givens' own admission we cannot rely on this doctrine to be "from Abraham" in any objective way. Let's have one peek at the contents of the Book of Abraham and ignore the ridiculous translation process. It's hard to ignore the text asserting historical "facts" that show how Joseph had no idea wha...

Re: Seer Stone Video

I remember the first time I stumbled across a bit of history that contradicted the official line (I found an old copy of the endowment ceremony containing the Adam God doctrine) and approached a church historian about it. I was convinced this must be a vicious anti-mormon production. No, he explain...

Re: Seer Stone Video

There's a level of cluelessness going on that unintentionally makes these two people look weirdly ignorant. Here's a direct quote from the video starting at 3:42: "But for some people it's still a little bit uncomfortable to think about that seer stone. Why do you think that is? "That's a good quest...

Re: Holy Cow!!! Devastating TV ad

Geez people. The Church is totally on top of this. The prophets, seers, and revelators who lead this Church with such prescience and prognostication just recently implemented a whole half hour of online training to fix this decades old problem. Too little too late as always. My ward was also urged ...

Re: Tribal rhetoric and the practice of

Today in sacrament meeting we had a young newly married couple speak. I generally give young people a pass when they give the indoctrinated speeches full of rhetoric but this particular young woman struck a nerve as the talk was particularly tuned to make my wife cry and give damaging messages to m...

Re: A Nice Compliment That Enraged Me

That's a great story, Momorrisey. I am appalled whenever a local church leader still does not know about the essays and it's on my bucket list to introduce them to more people in a way that won't raise the suspicions of my family when it happens. The current presentation of the Mountain Meadows Mass...

Re: Things I learned in seminary

I remember quite vividly a lesson in which I was taught about sin, and the fact that sin is not actually forgiven in the sense that Isaiah talks about. I was taught that even though sin may be forgiven, if you sin again the weight of the current sin as well as the weight of all the former sins of t...

Re: REVELATION TIME: President Nelson Announces Upcoming Important Message for Young People

This is really a strange announcement. It's not like we are waiting for a new trailer for Star Wars or for Borderlands 3 to be released. Nelson will have the full attention of the church in three weeks on General Conference. What can possibly be so amazing that it needs to be now and interrupt the s...

Re: If the Church went on trial. . . . ?

I am pretty sure that Kirton McConkie would try and disqualify me as a juror. I would probably just be a witness for the prosecution, but it would also depend on the charges. Such a trial would be likely be on civil charges against it. This is a situation that the church so richly deserves, but is u...

Re: Priesthood keys lesson

Claims of priesthood keys are the last things that the LDS church can hold onto without slipping into epistemic irrelevance. You can actually tell the YM that because it's undebateable. Without claims of exclusive priesthood authority to perform the necessary ordinances of salvation, we're just a bo...

Re: What should the church remain neutral on?

What would the LDS church actually have left if they stopped talking about these items? I think they would be left as a generic Protestant church focused on Jesus (hopefully, I suppose). All of these items are what makes the LDS church not only distinctive, but gives them a reason for existence in m...

Re: New handbook of instructions

So, does this mean that the maligned November 2015 policy is back on the books? Was the whole fanfare of easing up on it last April just for show? Does anyone else feel like this makes LDS policy more slippery than ever? When I was a ward clerk I prided myself be reading Handbook 1 and being the res...

Re: Still making sense of the LDS Church after leaving twice!

That is certainly a different path than most people take. What do you think you would find by going back again? Do you simply want to be part of a ward? Is there some fulfillment in the spirituality offered by the LDS church? Has your wife stayed with the RC church?

Knee pads might be more beneficial.
There are very ways that this conversation could safely proceed once we consider knee pads for temple garments.

Re: Book of Abraham

One piece of evidence that would be helpful is if there is an identical picture of a guy on a table with moving arms and legs from a real papyrus that was found intact. Here's the problem: http://www.mormonthink.com/img/papyri.jpg This is a photo of the actual papyri. Notice how much is missing and...
