Re: Technological advances BEFORE 1820?
Michael Faraday had cracked the properties of electricity and magnetism by 1820, but he didn't build the first electric motor until 1821, so I guess we have to credit that to Joseph Smith.

Re: 17 new temples?
Explain this please! I just looked at 2018 2019 2020 2021and 2022 statistics and Utah is among the top ten happiest states for all of those years and for three of those years Utah was in the top three. What have you and all the other exmormons figure out that the brethren and the state of Utah hasn...

Re: Whatever happened to the POX?
Four years later, the Church reversed the policy with no mention that it had been elevated to a revelation from God. If I remember correctly, they acted as if they had reversed it, but merely dumped the responsibility on local leaders so the cowardly High Sheriffs can skirt the blame and look like ...

Re: Mormonism's Galileo Moment
Occasionally someone like Pres. Nelson will lob a "explosion creates a watch" comment like a granade, but it doesn't affect the data, it only makes the TBM's feel reassured. They seem to always fall back on Paley's watch. It's a terrible argument, in my opinion. It is grossly oversimplified. Imagin...

Re: BYU-I Censors Anatomy textbooks
I believe it. I worked as an adjunct BYU-I professor in the 2000s. I was reported to the prophet for showing “porn” in my classes (I showed a tasteful birth movie (which I obtained from the department library) in Child Development & a video of a (changing) pregnant woman’s body) in Psych 101. I hop...

Re: 17 new temples?
Why do you care if the church builds temples? I care about this: https://i.redd.it/w3au4ih0qer81.png I care that a man who pretends to be a prophet of God loads up credulous people with an unnecessary burden. I care that this seems to be a showing of vain glory for one man to gain praise and to out...

Re: When did Zion stop being the goal? Maybe 1924
I'm surprised they didn't go back and modify the scriptures to make it look the the church's goal was to establish KSL in thesethelatterdays. Or Zions Bank. I'm not sure whether Brigham was really on board with the Zion in Missouri thing, or if it was just lip service to maintain the impression that...

Re: The widow's mite, or the widow's MUST
My calling in the church is organizing the fundraiser for YM and YW activities. Off topic (sorry, but curious). Just wondering if the activities for boys has become as crappy as activities for girls? Without the boy scouts, have the activities for YM and YW become equally underwhelming? Yup. Accord...

Re: Skewed Morality
Pics or it didn’t happen. Best to assume it didn't happen. After all, it was in the Year of Our Lord Nineteen Hundred and Ninety-Something. I'm not sure photography had been invented. It was virtual reality, not accordion, related. My company didn't even let me keep the award; they stuck it i...

Re: Skewed Morality
I was talking about going to a Weird Al concert with my BIL the other day ... Forget all of the morality stuff. you're still going to see Weird Al anyway, right? I saw him about 30 years ago and I'm kind of amazed to hear he's still at it. The show was very goofy, but fun. And there were fireworks....

Re: Unbundled Corruption and the LDS Church
But BlazerB, you forget how much money they are turning down by choosing not to be powerful corporate CEOs. Just think how much people like Hinkley and Packer, who never worked for anyone but the church, could make if somehow they were magically transformed into CEOs of Apple and ATT&T. Or if Uchtdo...

For example of how devout he is, he won't let his sons go home teaching with a companion who doesn't have a current recommend. Sidebar and thread hijack: If he was really following the counsel he wouldn't let a minor son go home teaching with any companion unless there was two deep leadership there...

In your defense, I'm sure that was before you knew the church was sitting on a hundred billion dollars of "charity" funds while still bleeding the widow.

Re: 17 new temples?
My take on the temple building frenzy is detailed in my blog post at Weat&Tares. Great read. I really wish I knew what the rest of the Q15 think about this. It seems to be some mixture of egomania and dementia. I'm certain some of them are wondering if it's time for an intervention, but how could t...

I guess it hasn't occurred to them that these kids actually have genitals, and have seen them? Also, in the video the girl is looking at the diagrams online. You know, where kids go to look at genitals.

Re: Under the Banner of Heaven TV show
The fact that LD$-Inc. had 3 different "scholars" dedicate that much time and energy to the book is quite good evidence that everyone should read it. Absolutely! Kind of like the CES letter. If they care that much about it, it must really be close to the jugular. ETA: sorry, in light of the topic a...
