Re: Ministering, YM, EQ, and the Bishopric

Most of the time only a small fraction of our meetings are about community building and helping one another live better, happier lives. The rest of the experience feels like sating the insecurities of a narcissistic organization; instead of reassuring someone that constantly asks, "Do you love me? ...

Re: If Joseph Smith got it right, then who got it wrong?

jfro18, what you're getting at here is the probability of the evidence given "it's all true." Specifically, that this probability is ridiculously close to 0. To do a proper Bayesian analysis, to estimate the probability of "Joseph Smith made it up" given the evidence, we would need two more things. ...

Re: TBM's and LGT

Remember "the book of Mormon isn't a historical document". It's the new narrative. There's a word that means history from a devotional or theological perspective , which describes this new narrative well. I can't remember it, though. I wonder how long it'll be before it's acceptable to regard the B...

That's pretty good. I would consider changing "salesman" to "missionary" or some other emotionally neutral word.

Send it! You've got this.

Re: Out of the frying pan, into the fire :(

Hoo, boy. You can set boundaries and plant seeds. I doubt much else would help you or them. "I'm not going to join another Mormonism. The costs far outweigh the benefits for me." Maybe ask them to find out what that church teaches about members who leave. If it's still enough like the JWs, it teache...

Not doing the Mormon things: terrible, will ruin your life. Rampant sexual abuse: ehh, at least the family is still Mormon. Straining at a gnat and swallowing a camel? Yep. This from a woman who grooms victims for her son. What a lovely woman. I did notice that the untaxed stipend from FILs last ca...

Re: The Lord Knows Us

The further I get from belief the more harmful these ideas seem to me. These ideas can be used for comfort in difficult times and to make it easier to accept suffering. The second is helpful because not accepting suffering makes it worse. (In the mornings, I greet chronic pain with "Hello, old frie...

I’m in a similar position but currently 2 hour church as we teach a fun aged primary class together and do more arts and crafts then lessons from the manual.

Re: The Lord Knows Us

You could tell a bunch of stories of members struggling who asked for a priesthood blessing, die anyway, and then say that the Lord knows us enough to know it was time and no amount of consecrated oil can change that. But I think your second idea is probably a bit more crowd pleasing. Not only that...

The church apologizes

The Church needs to apologize for its past racial policy and let the members know in no uncertain terms that they were wrong. Maintaining a stiff-necked and unrepentant posture is no way to heal. Being too arrogant to say sorry does not mesh with the claim that they are servants of the Lord. You've...

I'm betting there will be changes to the guy's baker cap  Changing to a unisex chef's hat would help give the participants a heavenly Escoffier look. https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/815l4fi5LGL._AC_SX425_.jpg Ah, this reminds me of my own endowment. Re: Henry Erying's Big Faith

This is the same guy that told BYU-I students about 16 months ago that if you had doubts about the church or its leaders to ask yourself "Am I True" first. yeah, he actually told college students that they needed to get down on their knees and repent to God if they caught themselves having question...

This is my favorite comment.

But no, of course they're not against feminism. According to the article, they're totally for it, as long as it allows for teaching and institutionalizing the Lord's revealed stereotypes.

Okay, here's something provocative: if killing Laban was really the best way to get the plates according to Mysterious God Criteria (because foreknowledge, wanting to teach a lesson, chaotic good alignment, mostly hands-off management style, etc.), then - according to the story's internal rules - Ne...

Re: What is the Church’s stance on feminism?

Latter-day Saints frown upon such things. That sums it up pretty well. I suspect we'll see people using terms like "the Lord's feminism," which of course isn't feminism at all. When they say Latter-day Saints frown on things they are telling you to start exercising your frowning muscles for the lon...
