Re: DW Back To Church

The phenomenon of members enjoying not having to go to church but saying they can't wait to go back is easy to explain. Liking is different from wanting. Ask any alcoholic, or anyone who has been hungry enough to eat absolutely anything. IMO, the experience of wanting to go back to church but enjoyi...

Re: If I could ask them one question . . . Come Follow Me, Lesson 27

"I wonder how many atheists today cannot believe in God because … the devil appeared to them in the form of an angel? This makes no sense at all." So he was an atheist who was fooled by what he thought was an angel sent by God??? Such a sloppy story. How do people even read that without saying, "wa...

Re: Grant Palmer's non-believing GA revealed

Ex-mormonism is silly. So to make sure I understand all this. A guy who spent his whole life teaching for the church writes a book, then publishes it after he retires and becomes pseudo famous only to claim an anonymous guy (who also spent his life working for the church) gets paid $1M. The exmo cr...

Re: RFM and Evangelicals. Out of the pan and into the fire?

I listened to most of it as well and had similar feelings. These folks had left Mormonism and found faith in Christ without all of the Mormon baggage. I’m glad they have found something that they enjoy and works for them. It was odd because most who stop believing in Mormonism stop believing in God...

But then my dad could remember his parents wearing ankle-length garments. That was when they used to kneel for the sacrament prayer and raise both hands over their heads when they prayed.
What.

What??

Re: Grant Palmer's non-believing GA revealed

Fun to know who. Just more failure of discernment and likely own-goal from second annointing as with Mattson and Phillips. Interesting that they're all from Europe. If this is actually a trend, I would guess it comes from a mixture of secularized culture and having a smaller pool to draw fundamenta...

Re: RFM and Evangelicals. Out of the pan and into the fire?

Could it be that people who are consumed with religious rumination (and I'm including myself here) are basically drama queens who need to create villains? Maybe? I think needing to be attached to a fundamentalist religion is driven by the same factors that drive conspiracy thinking: perceived ambie...

Re: Thoughts on Romney and his March?

To answer your last question please refer back to my original post on this thread since the answer is already there if you had read just a little more carefully. ;) Hey, you're right, there it is: I just wonder where Mitt's courage was when he could have called out his church leaders before 1978, w...

Now there will be an objection that similar ideas have been found outside the church, so it can't be faulted - it's partly a product of it's time. I like your responses, Reuben. The critical difference that makes Mormonism a potential breeding ground for craziness, I think, is that it teaches you t...

Re: What’s the future of anti-Mormonism look like?

I tend to agree with Hagoth: you have to be carefully taught to fear and despise those who are different and the church mostly isn't teaching this generation very effectively. The fear and disgust taught in the church requires ignorance and isolation to take root and stay strong. Our kids are getti...

Re: Your Favorite Foods

I'm also a bit obsessed with pairing Mild Barley Drinks™ with food. I'm not really good at it. There are a few pairings that are easy, and some easy deserts and chocolate (still a desert?) with specific varieties, but other than that, I'm not really good at it. Either that, or I'd rather just have ...

I think my sentence is the same for both cataclysms.

If you are not willing to doubt the stories you tell about yourselves and about your enemies, you will cause tremendous suffering.

What if someone took Brigham Young at his word and beheaded a mixed race family because, according to a prophet of God, it would be showing them the greatest kindness and mercy. What if you heard a voice in your head telling you to sacrifice your son by stabbing him and cutting his throat? Isaac wa...

Re: I'm not a fan of vandalism, but the point is hard to argue

The peril of raising up flawed humans as ideals. Rather, raise up monuments to ideals. Not sure it would help. Mormon temples are partly monuments to ideals, some good, some bad: strong families, but also a narrow view of allowable families and a divisive ideal of spiritual purity. The occasional f...

Re: Bendar Feels Attacked

In light of my previous post and my recently remembering this, I think what Bednar's video is about is influencing the upcoming elections. It's very much in line with populist conservative thought. Its main points would be right at home on the Glenn Beck Program, where every infringement is intenti...
