Re: The most surreal conversation with DW about retrofitting stories

Relevant: Why Do People Believe in Conspiracy Theories? There's a lot of overlap in modes of thinking. "The powers of darkness are trying to take over the world, and we're God's last line of defense" in particular is very much a conspiracy theory. One thing I do when I read such articles, to keep my...

Re: Lively discussion for NBI: Fighting for Jesus; where do we cross the line?

Individuals have a right to protect and sustain themselves. They're legally constrained, and further morally constrained, in what they can do. There are hard lines and soft lines, and sometimes the soft lines are more like wide gray gradients. Organizations are the same. No question. The church oper...

Going in for cataract surgery tomorrow. Wonder how the world will look after that? :geek:
One of the first things my FIL said after his surgery was, "Hey! My arms have freckles!"

So cataract surgery will make freckles appear on your arms. Nothing to be alarmed about.

Re: RFM Mormon Apologetic Lecture Series

Consiglieri, my first exposure to you was when I heard you doing the apologist thing on a podcast, but I can't remember what podcast. It was when I was still trying really hard to believe, so I enjoyed your bullseyes. I suspect that if I had heard it a couple of years later I might have thought of ...

I loved how they waited until almost the end to mention she left the church... The placement doesn't bother me much. For almost every reader except disaffected members and ex-members, it's barely important. What bothers me is the paltering: Ardern was raised in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-...

Or - and hear me out - maybe it's all made up. Don't tell the apologists about this defense! It is absolutely bullet-proof. If it's all made up, then it doesn't have to be consistent with facts and well-validated theories. Hell, it doesn't even have to be consistent with itself because it can be re...

Re: Nihilism

I call myself a Christian agnostic atheist. Here are my random thoughts. I used to believe my life had meaning only if I lived forever. Now I think that was pretty self-absorbed. I'm excited to imagine where nature takes the human race, and bummed that I probably won't be around to see it. I get tha...

Re: One More Please

Just learned a new benefit of not wearing garments this week! We live in a rural, wooded area, a few acres of land, lots of yard work. My hubby used to get ticks in the crown jewels pretty regularly when we clear brush. But now that he wears regular fruit of the loom, no more ticks in the nether re...

Re: Speed of Prayer Theory

So if the sun can get its light from Kolob “through the medium of Kae-e-vanrash”, why is it so hard to believe that prayers can be received and answered instantaneously over that great distance? Duh. So... Kae-e-vanrash is subspace then? Cool. It also sounds like a skin condition you'd pick up from...

Re: Speed of Prayer Theory

He might delegate prayer answering to a first-degree celestial (a ministering servant) named Brian who orbits the Sun at the Sun-Earth L3 point. Turnaround time for answering prayers from the other side of the Sun would be about 33 minutes, if Brian stays on his toes. Add in a hyper-lightspeed accel...

Re: Couples Married Civilly Now Authorized for Immediate Temple Marriage

This is a new kind of thing: Where a licensed marriage is not permitted in the temple, or when a temple marriage would cause parents or immediate family members to feel excluded [...] It looks like, in their zeal to narrow the circumstances under which marriage outside the temple is allowed, the Q15...

Re: I have anger issues and need professional help!

On Sunday I was sitting in the primary room minding my own business wrangling two kids in my primary class. Across the room sat Sister Sharon Stone. As she adjusted in her chair, and re-crossed her legs, I got a very unwanted peek-a-boo into her personal space and was blinded by her white and anyth...

Re: Is everyone going to be white and delightsome in the celestial kingdom?

To be fair, President Oaks did say "or trivial." Race might be trivial, not temporary. You get to choose how to understand what he said, which seems to be a feature of discourse during times when doctrine is changing. Mormons are a strange bunch. It seems every other fundamentalist religion teaches ...

1) Married all of his wives in the temple.

2) Received his calling and election three times because he pays 30% tithing.

3) Is made of meat.

4) Has done his genealogy all the way back to the Neanderthals.

5) Has enough faith not to be healed.
