Technological advances BEFORE 1820?

Today a few of us NOMs got together for lunch and had a great time laughing at the absurdity of Mormonism. The subject drifted to technology and the idea that more advances have been made since the church was restored in 1820. We’ve all heard about the computer coming forth so that genealogy can be ...

Re: Anxiety and Depression

Go to therapy with your wife. Sister Ryder and I did 15 weeks and came out better able to communicate. We don’t always agree but we’ve learned to communicate and set our boundaries. At the beginning of this faith transition mess, I was afraid we’d be divorced. Had little kids. Now I’m afraid we won’...

Re: Church 2021 Annual Report - "Caring For Those In Need"

The 906 a million spent: $906 million was expended to help those in need through: ■ FAST-OFFERING ASSISTANCE, which provides temporary financial help to those in need. ■ BISHOPS’ ORDERS FOR GOODS, including giving food and commodities from bishops’ storehouses and Deseret Industries stores to those ...

Re: Anxiety and Depression

I’ll put in the plug for exercise, sleep, and trying to eat healthy. Talking to your doctor is also a perfect solution.

Taking a break from Mormonism is highly recommended too. Both chapel and internet Mormonism.

Take care of yourself first.

Re: New church membership decline and GC moves to Africa?

I think the church works hard at pushing an image of success in Africa. Sounds very similar to the South America growth of the 90’s and early 00’s. Sure they are baptizing and growth is high. But so was South America and it’s retracted with high levels of inactivity. The church isn’t growing. Conver...

Hey Mike, perhaps you could send a link you your happiest statistics?

I’ve read articles that report high use of anti depressants, suicides, and pharmaceutical prescription drug abuse among Mormons.

Mormon prosperity can also be questioned as high debts and bankruptcy are common among Utah Mormons.

Re: Unbundled Corruption and the LDS Church

(Snip) They are amassing wealth for God, not for themselves. GAs don't have mansions, yachts, secret lovers (well, one comes to mind), or trust funds for their kids. They have access to more than your average Joe, and there is certainly some nepotism going on. I think you would be surprised. They c...

Re: End-of-history illusion and Life after mormonism

I recently talked to Corsair and he wisely pointed out that at some point you just get bored of Mormonism and tired of evaluating your Mormon past. You find new hobbies that occupy the present and drive change for the future. So Link, the question is… What do YOU want to do now? I’ve struggled deepl...

Re: The widow's mite, or the widow's MUST

My calling in the church is organizing the fundraiser for YM and YW activities. Off topic (sorry, but curious). Just wondering if the activities for boys has become as crappy as activities for girls? Without the boy scouts, have the activities for YM and YW become equally underwhelming? Yup. Accord...

Re: End-of-history illusion and Life after mormonism

I’d like to respond with a quick drawing I just thought of. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/d9/a3/66/d9a3669f209dbd232ae4f2cd86e85c25.jpg Is it really that bad to let go of the prescribed path a bit later in life? When you have more knowledge, wisdom, and money? I mean sure we missed out on a bunch o...

Then a few years later I met Weird Al when he was an MC at an awards show where he presented me with an award. But that's another story. The point is: one eternal round. But the Monkees weren't there.

Well you know, all the weird rules were never about teaching you morality anyway. Think about temple recommend interviews - nothing about compassion, or kindness, or Christ-like behavior, just a bunch of more or less uniquely Mormon rules like WoW and wearing your garments day and night and stuff l...

Re: The widow's mite, or the widow's MUST

Former stake auditor here: Definitely the widows must. I actually got released after I held up the stake audit because I kept finding bishops storehouse food orders never matched the carbon copy the storehouse sent back to the ward. This means the bishop or RSP filled out the form for 2 loads of bre...

Re: Under the Banner of Heaven TV show

Church spokespeople, FAIR, and others are already doing damage control and trying to discourage people from watching it. When a church tells you not to watch/read something, that's like a spotlight pointing out exactly what you should watch/read, because their telling you there it truth there that ...

Re: Under the Banner of Heaven TV show

Sis Ryder and I watched the first episode. Full disclosure: it was already late when we turned it on and we were tired from a busy day. The Mormon portrayal comes across a bit cringey but you have to realize they’re developing the characters and the Lafferty's were a bit strange. The parallel story ...
