Re: If I were an atheist

I should add that much of what I write is just for fun, and I didn't really say everything that I said. But let's explore polytheism for a bit from the traditional Mormon perspective. Since the traditional perspective is that we can eventually become gods (or goddesses) with our own eternal increase...

Re: If I were an atheist

I used to posit that the reason the Old Testament Jehovah was such an angry badass mofo God was that he didn't know what it felt like to be human and he had no sympathy. The New Testament Jesus is a kinder, gentler God, a one of us God, a God who knows what stickers feel like when you step on them. ...

Re: Fight The New Drug

People toss around the word "addiction" a little haphazardly, especially in the church. Experience changes the brain, we know that. Reading this will change your brain. Exercise will change your brain. Drug use changes your brain and some drugs can change it a little more dramatically. Take enough a...

Re: Elder Gong: “Please don’t post that photo…”

Liking.. the gateway emotion to love. Inclusion, the dangerous behavior that leads to tolerance, which leads to acceptance and liking. Better to keep them in the outgroups so we can perceive them as homogenous and pat our own backs while we profess our philos to all those poor folks cursed with thos...

Re: Love

As Paul Thorn sings, "I don't like half the folks I love."

I've heard "love" used manipulatively but not as often as "the spirit", which is used to justify all kinds of manipulative and hurtful behaviors. I was just following the spirit.

Yeah right.. and we love you too.

Re: Granting small indulgences

I think it seems pretty clear that there are GAs and apostles who press for more inclusivity and love, and these guys are in the minority to those who press for more adherence to this covenant path sort of thing. Both say they "love" you no matter what, but the one group seems to offer more acceptan...

Re: If I were an atheist

I believe because I want to. I'm maybe 50/50 on my certainty, but I like the concept of a creator, a higher collective power that connects us. I love the concept of some sort of life after death, so that's what I hope for and choose to believe in. I also like the idea of prayer and/or meditation to ...

Re: What are you watching right now?

I recommend the series Fargo. It's well done, well written, well acted, and has several homages to various Coen brothers' movies thrown in. The last season is not as strong imo. To save you the trouble of looking it up, the events described in the series are NOT based on true stories, but the assert...

If I were an atheist

Like most of you, I've often heard people (especially Mormons) say things like "if I didn't believe in the church, I'd be an awful person" or "I don't know where I'd be without my testimony" like having a belief in the truthfulness of the gospel was the only thing keeping them from being a liar, che...

Re: Dehlin Alternate Reality

I also listened to the podcast where Dehlin said that, and thought it was odd. This discussion forum obviously exists. I think Dehlin is just ignorant of it, or didn't want to give us any love. I'm not sure what to think about Dehlin. I enjoy a lot of his podcasts, but I don't think he is a great in...

How much difference we would feel about him if he said something like, "Yes, I regret that happened under my watch. With the benefit of hindsight and further knowledge, we understand that type of therapy is ineffective and unethical, though at that time, researchers were sincerely searching for an e...

Re: DHO's Attempted Gaslighting of Electroshock Therapy On Gay Individuals At BYU

Just so everyone is clear.. electro shock therapy is often what people say when they mean electro convulsive therapy, or electro convulsive shock therapy, which is still a viable treatment for severe depression. The controversial therapy that was conducted at BYU in the 70's and maybe as late as the...

Re: Where was John the beloved buried? Or was he not buried?

Regarding John (and the 3 Nephites) never tasting death, is there any mythology or stories from other religious writers about John (or others) to continue to roam the earth saving souls, or was this an original thought by Joseph Smith?

My very favorite food is good food, and it has also been my experience that mild barley drinks seem to make a lot of good food even better. And hard cactus related drinks are excellent with Mexican food. And vitamin ThC makes good food great and bad food terrible. Other things I've learned in my 50+...

Re: Your Favorite Foods

Some psychologists say humans don't have instinctual behavior? I've never met one who claimed that. Source? I'm baffled one could claim such a thing. BF Skinner claimed humans don't really have free will.. that behavior is all about our learning history, but by now we know behaviorism explains a lot...

I've also contemplated personal nomenclature and failed to find one that really feels like it fits. Maybe it's because I've never really liked to be pigeon holed into particular categories. I've found that how I describe my religion varies depending on the context and audience. When asked, yeah, I'm...

Corsair, I'm curious. Do the face masks in the temple have to be white?

Is everyone given a light blue disposable mask to wear, or do they bring in what they have? It might be cool to see a multi variation of mask colors.

I was slightly surprised that i could write that scriptoral drivel pretty quickly, thanks to all those years reading joe's work and doing a lot of writing. I will say it's easier in my 50's than it would have been in my 20's. Then again, all I've got is a baseball cap and a rock i found out in the b...
