Re: 2nd Commandment

Based on what I remember about the Hebrew translation, the third commandment is more about using God's name vainly, or for vanity purposes, rather than just about profanity. I took it to mean that God isn't happy with those using his name to get gain, or to those who profess their devotion but have...

We might need to come up with an issue of GQ magazine: Gentleman's Quorumly to balance out this loud laughter and make fun of the lords anointed.

Hmmmm....

Re: Prop 2 turnabout

Well, there are a few things written in to this compromise that sabatoge it. It uses words like prescription, that at attic ally make it illegal. Doctors cannot write a prescription for any form of MJ. It requires a pharmacist to work at the dispensary, which will cause hm to lose his license. It i...

Re: Prop 2 turnabout

It would be nice if "the people" could actually do anything about it, but for now, the theocracy still rules. I hope I live to see the day when they no longer have power, or maybe I can hope to not care at some point? My prediction: in 15-20 years the church will no longer dominate Utah politics. B...

Re: Weak anachronistic arguments

A much more effective way would have been to merely point out that trying to keep a beehive upright in a rotating vessel for 365 plus days would have been messy. Case closed at that point without much counter argument. I think you're forgetting the all-encompassing counter-argument that always work...

Re: Polygamy and later sexual repression

I had a similar reaction to the Angel post mentioned. Hell hath no fury.... and all that. I also made a point of snuggling up with my DW for a bit. But I want to thank Angel for posting that because the point she is trying to make is both informative and a warning to those of us still happily marri...

Re: Polygamy and later sexual repression

Arcturus,...you used the words "hard core position". I speak from experience and attest to the fact that Mormonism's stance on purity and sexuality is extreme and can cause serious issues for individuals. Sorry for the details but I'll elaborate a little. I was raised in a hard core orthodox home a...

Re: Save My Soul, brother TBM

First of all, what an ass hat. Second, aren't the earliest primary sources pretty solid in that Emma and Oliver were pretty pissed about Joseph having his fling with Fanny Alger, and it was likely sexual in nature? What "reading" is this ass hat talking about? The fun thing about the LDS concept abo...

Re: Thank you Bill!

His podcast was the safe zone for me after I read the essays and realized all was not well in Zion. It confirmed that I was not the only one who was aware of the discrepancies... A large part of my sanity today is largely due to his efforts, his willingness to share TRUTH despite the consequences, ...

If you could go back...

Listened to Bill Reel's interview with Infants on Thrones dudes, and the topic of "if you could go back..." and not know any of the issues with Mormonism, etc. would you do it? I've thought a lot about this recently, and I'm not sure if I can answer the question firmly in any direction right now. Wh...

Re: Supporting a Beneficial Mythology

Maintaining a mythology that helps shape us into better people can make us appreciative of that mythology. Our "black box" feedback loop needs to constantly examine whether our particular mythological narrative is succeeding or failing in shaping us to be better people. Your thoughts? My DW and I w...

Re: Polygamy and later sexual repression

Actually the larger culture taught that sex was only for making babies (especially for women) and if you did it just because you enjoyed it, you were committing sin. Look at the Catholics. This idea is where the whole notion of birth control being sinful came from. Birth control was enabling people...

We haven't come out, yet, but Spouseman is already getting texts about his apostate wife, and my teenagers get messages "encouraging" them to follow their leaders over their mother.
Ouch, this would be a hard one to deal with.

Re: Came out to my mom

Good luck Thoughtful for when you have the discussion with the ILs. To our surprise, my DW's parents took it rather well and we discovered that they have a very nuanced view of the church - attending for the benefit of a faith community only w/ no hats hanging on exclusive priesthood authority, etc....

Mormon Dessert Gathering

My DW and I are going to a dessert this evening where certainly many Mormons in our ward boundary will be. Anticipating the question: Did you guys move to another ward? Haven’t seen you in a while... We haven’t been for 6 months because we’re done with the church but not everyone knows that. How do ...

Re: DW wants to see LDS Family Services - Feel like I'm at a breaking point

Really sucks jfro18. I'm really fortunate in that my DW came to an understanding of the issues pretty quick. Hoping you all the best... Interestingly, my DW really wasn't interested in much of anything for a while, even serious doctrinal nuances didn't bother her. But maybe by chance or something el...

Re: Connection to Christianity Waning...

God doesn't "demand" innocent blood from a reluctant bystander. He, in a very real way offers His own blood on our behalf because He knows how difficult it is here in this existence and in this experience called life. The only "creations" that don't make it back to God are those who love their sins...
