What major points of LDS (priesthood/temples/spirit world/polygamy/etc) are derived from the Book of Mormon?

This might be an odd question, but I was talking to my wife yesterday morning and one of the things I brought up is that the Book of Mormon by itself is actually pretty bland doctrine-wise. I said the things that bother me the most about the church stem from Joseph Smith and what he did *after* the ...

Re: Difference between a NOM and an Exmo

Difference between Noms and Exmos? Just a matter of degree and approach. I hope all of the posters here never become as bitter as some I have seen. When I first started looking online for discussions I immediately found the reddit /exmormon sub. I love how active it is and I enjoy sometimes reading...

Re: Did your wife/husband/parents/children mourn?

When I stopped going I talked to my wife about how it made me unhappy and that I couldn't do it anymore. We really never talked about it after that for a long time... I know she mourned it but to this day I don't know really know much more. To that point we didn't really do a great job there - I fel...

Re: Difference between a NOM and an Exmo

I think there are varying degrees to the idea of what NOMs are, but I've always kind of had the over-simplified thought that: NOMs are those who have issues with the church and find ways to adjust so they can still go to church, but have to make changes to make it work Exmos are those who leave for ...

Alas, First I want to make sure I say that you are amazing... seriously - that is an incredible reply to help a total stranger, so thank you for that. And I think you're right on the other stuff. The cog dis is definitely strong and I know that because another sibling went through this a few years b...

Re: For those who stopped believing, how *sure* are you that the church is a lie and what makes you so sure?

So instead of working on my day job, I'm trying to do a write-up of the priesthood restoration. I’m with others here. The priesthood restoration was a big one for me. Would love to see this visualization when you’re done. Me too. Just don't lose your job over it, okay?  I work from home ...

Re: One step forward, two steps back

Jfro, what is your goal? You keep talking like your main goal here is to get your wife out of the church. Now, if I get that impression with the little bit you are saying here, I am wondering just how your wife feels. If she feels that you are out to change her, that brings up all kind of feelings,...

Re: For those who stopped believing, how *sure* are you that the church is a lie and what makes you so sure?

This thread has been really great and thank you to everyone who has been a part of it. I think we all have our own journey to this point and what I find fascinating is that everyone has different reasons. Some leave because the history doesn't line up, some leave because the 'scriptures' have so man...

Re: For those who stopped believing, how *sure* are you that the church is a lie and what makes you so sure?

This is the reason our TBM spouses and family don't want to discuss it. Most of these people actually know there is information out there that they would find to be very credible and very damaging to their testimonies. ...and (IMHO), they are more afraid to pull their heads out of the sand then the...

Re: For those who stopped believing, how *sure* are you that the church is a lie and what makes you so sure?

The Church isn’t some benign social club. It exacts a heavy price in missed opportunities, lost chances, unnecessary sadness and guilt, wasted time and money, misdirected service, and unfulfilled potential - all in the name of a made-up hokey religion that is fairly easily falsified. I don’t care i...

Re: One step forward, two steps back

Well I thought I was making progress yesterday but for whatever reason DW did not talk to me much at all last night or this morning. I might bring up possibly moving our anniversary to a better day, but I have a bad feeling that would not go over well... so I have no idea. I think for me right now I...

Re: One step forward, two steps back

My TBM DH has a suggestion. Move the celebration to a neutral day. Sure it isn't celebrating on the anniversary, but that day is now tainted with a fight. By moving the celebration, you start over fresh and not already hurt and angry. He also commented that you need to learn to say when you are hur...

Re: For those who stopped believing, how *sure* are you that the church is a lie and what makes you so sure?

I have to remind myself in discussions like this that there is no accounting for what other people believe or do not. Many smart people believe in Mormonism or some variant thereof. For me, the preponderance of evidence and my many negative life experiences related to the church lead me to *not* be...

Re: For those who stopped believing, how *sure* are you that the church is a lie and what makes you so sure?

Here's a good starting point: In addition to these Book of Mormon teachings, other churches at the time—including ones with which many early Church members were familiar—taught about the priesthood. The Disciples of Christ, from which many early members of the Church converted, for example, had dev...

Re: One step forward, two steps back

Thanks :) I sent her a message today to let her know that while I'm struggling with everything, it wasn't fair of me to project that on to her yesterday. Yeah my feelings are hurt that she's going to spend a few hours on our anniversary with a church thing, but I also know I need to pick my battles ...

Re: For those who stopped believing, how *sure* are you that the church is a lie and what makes you so sure?

So instead of working on my day job, I'm trying to do a write-up of the priesthood restoration. It is really difficult to simplify it down to a basic timeline, but holy crap it is amazing to read both the timeline along with the FAIR responses. You could do an easy 20 page write-up just of the pries...

Re: How feasible is the middle way?

Thanks to all for these responses! I just spent a couple of days in the hospital :( so I won't have time to respond to everything, but I did read each of them and I love the different perspectives provided. It seems my middle way will be a progressive edge towards out. DW would like me to tell each...

Re: For those who stopped believing, how *sure* are you that the church is a lie and what makes you so sure?

The straw for me was the evolution of the priesthood. Once i layed down the timeline and looked at how it and doctrine grew and changed as leaders ran into problems i couldn't see it as anything other than fake. I would love to see a visual timeline that illustrates this theme. It would track doctr...

One step forward, two steps back

After a nice 10 days or so of calm, we've fallen back into the trap of being mad at each other over church. Our anniversary is Saturday, and yesterday I was told that she needs to spend a few hours in the afternoon for a church project. I was obviously not thrilled but just stayed quiet about it... ...

Re: For those who stopped believing, how *sure* are you that the church is a lie and what makes you so sure?

Your question does not cover all of the logical possibilities. For instance the old distinction between the gospel and the institutional church while rarely mentioned theses days is an important distinction for some . It is possible for one to be "true' and the other to be "false". i am reasonably ...
