Re: Will Nelson apologize to the NAACP?

I saw this posted by John Dehlin on Facebook and then I saw someone linked an article I believe from Jana Reiss talking about it. Personally I can't see him apologizing because it opens up so many problems -- if he apologizes and claims it was just men making a bad choice, it throws every prophet fr...

Re: Is NOM going the direction of some other online groups?

As for the politics I just ignore it. It isn't worth getting worked up over. I have considered blocking a poster or two but haven't because I just can't get that worked up. I think that more people find Reddit just because it is easy. Maybe we need to do some search engine optimization to be easier...

Re: Is NOM going the direction of some other online groups?

I think it's the death of message boards in general as other forms of social media are places where people are already hanging out. The benefit that NOM has over something like FB is that it's more anonymous. This is another big part of it - these formats aren't really conducive to the 'quick' post...

Re: Is NOM going the direction of some other online groups?

I think to a certain extent NOM is always going to be a stop on the way out because we've all seen the middle road can only work for so long (with few exceptions). But that said I think this group is fairly tucked away, so there's no good way to find it where as so many people post on Reddit regular...

Re: The Trickster God

Wait. That was written while Joseph was translating the first 116 pages, wasn't it? I believe it was done right at the beginning of the BoM so yeah - it would've been either right before or during the 116 pages... I believe right before since Martin Harris wanted some confirmation the BoM character...

Re: The Trickster God

Does anyone have a copy of the letters that Joseph Smith actually wrote as a sample of the Book of Mormon? I looked through this thread and saw a parody about it, but I would like to see the real thing if it's possible. (It's possible that it was here, and I just missed it as I scrolled back throug...

Re: New WOW Video

My favorite part is where they say Joseph "received the WoW by revelation ," and then ignored it for his entire life. Oh, wait... They forgot the last half of that sentence. (And literally no other mormon cared too much about the WoW until Heber J. Grant came along...) I've always thought it was in...

Re: New WOW Video

I hope both your comments make a difference to many people's way of thinking. They won't... believing members aren't going to get caught up in the history of the WoW. But honestly the WoW is a mess - coffee alone is so stupid. Look at the video -- they say hot drinks are understood to be coff...

Re: Gospel Topics Essay on Super Bowl XLII

This is good stuff! And it makes me want to do a creative writing project making LDS Gospel Topics essays over things that we now know to be false (flat earth, we never landed on the moon, Harry Potter is a real story, etc). I choose to believe the Patriots lost every Super Bowl though tbh... ...

Re: The Letter.

I agree with Red Ryder -- maybe just a short acknowledgement that you got it, that you appreciate they care, and that you're happy. Maybe add that you don't want to tell them the reasons you left, but if they are ever open to hearing them to let you know... that way you're leaving the ball in their ...

Re: New WOW Video

This video doesn't bother me as much as the seer stones since I think the WoW is not something that is foundational to the truth claims of the church, but they leave out a few key things: 1. If God was really directly the members to be healthy, why didn't God tell them to boil water. The lack of the...

Re: The Trickster God

But see, this is what I'm trying to tell you. We have a little bit of that. We have the next best thing already. We don't have the plates. We don't have the order they were in in the Book of Mormon. We DO have a few characters with specific English interpretations. So, when you say, we have no avai...

Re: The Trickster God

To me, it is an article of faith that it is a foregone conclusion that the characters are authentically ancient, and that there is no chance they are not. If you read my post above about Glover above carefully, you will see that I am focused ONLY on those parts where I have a translation key. This ...

Re: The Trickster God

Because it is a forced-to-fit scheme according to a preconcieved notion of modernity, forced to fit into the scheme of the Latin Alphabet, with no concern for the likelihood of an ancient context. The thing is that it's *not* forced to fit - the image is matching up characters to the Latin alphabet...

Re: The Trickster God

That's not very convincing, by the way. But why is it not convincing? The reason I ask is because it is very convincing to those who have left the church as well as those who have no skin in the game. Why is it that you do not feel it is convincing that so much of Joseph's translated languages (bot...

Re: The Trickster God

Please read this carefully, multiple times if necessary, until you understand precisely what I am doing with this. Thanks. I don't really need to read carefully multiple times to see that you are looking to piggyback off what Jerry Grover has done to try and crack Reformed Egyptian. The problem is ...

Re: The Trickster God

there is a NHM/Nahom, and reformed Egyptian that Joseph Smith presented for the word "Book of Mormon" which matches the hieratic and demotic. I have yet to see a single non-LDS scholar that would claim Joseph's reformed Egyptian is legit in any way whatsoever. That's a pretty bold claim without som...

Re: The Trickster God

In that book, Mitchell criticizes, satircally, those writing disertations where they use unclear and convoluted language to add a sense of sophisitication to their research. People high in business (in my experience) often do the same thing by quoting buzzwords where they say a whole lot of crap th...

Re: The Trickster God

How about Doctrine and Covenants 19, where God seems to be saying that He uses terms such as "endless" and "eternal" when taking about punishment in the afterlife because people will (incorrectly) interpret those words to mean endless or eternal in duration. At least, that's how I always interprete...

Re: The Trickster God

I'm not your friend, you sons of bitches. You were the ones that decided that. You were the ones that decided how this was going to be. This is the exact same thing I say to the drive-thru speaker when McDonalds tells me that the ice cream machine is down for cleaning with their insincere apologies!
