Re: Lunch with my apostate Dad

I'm so sorry - what a frustrating development in what should otherwise be something that you can bond over. Like others said, maybe try to figure out what he would take that approach, because that has to have some backstory or reasoning that will hopefully make sense of it all. But just sorry you ha...

Re: New message about choosing to believe

If one uses the term "these things" or "those things" often enough, you never have to be specific and you force the listened/reader to fill in the blanks with their own imagination or thoughts. So the presentation becomes whatever the listener/reader wants it to be. It's a dodge and a slight of han...

Re: Roll Red Roll, Joseph Smith, and looking the other way

That taboo against talking about it why when Joseph Smith got caught trying to seduce a girl by the last name of Johnson (iirc) and her dad and brothers decided to tar and feather and castrate the guy (doctor chickened out on the castration) and the incident comes down to us as “poor Joseph. They t...

Re: Lila Tueller Interview

I really enjoyed her interview. She is the daughter of a Mormon top player. She went through a faith crisis starting this year and has come out to her family and the world with her disaffection. I’m kind of jealous. I’ve been in a truth crisis for 4-5 years and nobody knows but my friends here on N...

Re: Is #DezNat a Thing? Am I living under a rock?

DezNat is what happens when really paranoid, racist, homophobic people find each other on social media and feel emboldened that they are not alone. They are truly terrible people and I wish that the church would give them a platform because the stuff they post online is not just incorrect, but beyon...

Re: Out Groups

I'm so sorry - I am so grateful I do not live near my in-laws for this very reason. I have one sister-in-law who is out of the church, and she's the only one I feel comfortable with these days because I know the others all talk behind our backs about church stuff along with the fears you mentioned a...

Re: What if....

I didn't join until I was a teenager after I had been dating my now wife for years - I think I started the missionary discussions about a year in but didn't join until I was in college just because I thought it would be more respectful to my parents. So the what if here would 100% be that I would al...

Re: A Netlix/TV show about Joseph Smith would be absolutely fascinating

What would the title be? See that would depend heavily on what the tone was (dark, funny, drama, etc) Just going to brainstorm here... Making Mormonism Oh, Joseph Joseph's Fruits Come Follow Me (that would seriously trigger some people) The Smiths Celestializing Frontier Sex Cult Rock in a Hat Whit...

Re: A Netlix/TV show about Joseph Smith would be absolutely fascinating

Every time I see a thread like this my first initial reaction is: Nobody cares about MORmONism . I've always agreed with this and still do for the most part, but it was talking with this one nevermo friend who kept telling me how fascinated he was by what I was talking with him about... he even sta...

Re: How the church has changed belief in the Godhead

The change in the godhead is damning because it forced Joseph to change the Book of Mormon, the First Vision, and even begins a stylistic change in the revelations You can see it everywhere, and there's no way to get around the fact that Joseph Smith made these changes about 15 YEARS after claiming ...

A Netlix/TV show about Joseph Smith would be absolutely fascinating

I was talking with my one non-Mormon friend that I actually talk about the Mormon church with that a show on Netflix about JS could honestly be a huge hit. We were tossing ideas back and forth as to whether or not you make it a drama, dark comedy, or a straight-up comedy show. And then talking about...

Re: Patrick Mason and the collapse of apologetics

I need to listen to this once I return home from my family churchcation, but I am so bummed they lost 2/3 of it. Kudos to Mason for being willing to do a podcast with two critics of the church - I'll give him that even if I really despise the way he tries to keep people in the church. But it's amazi...

Re: Does your spouse know you post on NOM?

My wife knows I post within a group that is more constructive than places like reddit, but I've never told her the name of the site because I don't want her reading what I write until she's truly ready to talk about it. As of now she refuses to talk about anything in detail, so it's just not worth it.

Re: Visiting in laws on a Europe senior mission... such a frustrating trip.

So far today we were taken to the restaurant owned by a member and her parents had the member come over and tell us her conversation story. I always forget how cringey it gets... and then when I'm around her family it just floods back. Still laughing that they'll drink tea now as they continue to ac...

Re: Visiting in laws on a Europe senior mission... such a frustrating trip.

This isn't a vacation...... :| It's more like an obligatory field trip to some of those big sales/motivational meetings for Amway, Mary Kay, and Scientology. So sorry.... No chance of getting off on your own for some real sightseeing sometime? This is definitely not a vacation... it's a very expens...

Visiting in laws on a Europe senior mission... such a frustrating trip.

Im just venting so feel free to skip this one, but for the second time in three years our massive vacation is to visit my in laws in Europe who decided they'd rather skip seeing their grandchildren for three years and pay the church to work for free. So far ive had two tours of church buildings out ...

According to his Facebook post, this is the final Brother Jake video.

Hopefully something gets him out of retirement in the future - his videos early on made me laugh when I was really angry about finding out all of these things for the first time.

Re: Moses Chapter 3

I believe Joseph could adapt and conjure up whatever story was needed at the moment to enforce his prophetic abilities. Being consistent over time did not seem to be as important as keeping the flow of revelation coming. Exactly - *every* time his leadership was challenged, he was able to find a wa...
