Re: Uplift movement

I wasn't convinced he went all the way back to full believer in the church. I had the feeling he was back to believing in God and that for the time being, ldscorp is his favorite or most familiar brand. He stated that he felt "alone" in the church and that few understood where he was and where he h...

Re: Uplift movement

I tried watching his buddy's power point presentation on coming back to the faith and it was hard to stay focused. What I sense from these folks is that they tip toed into fowler stage 4 on one major issue (IE biblical scholarship for the power point guy) resolved it and either retreated back to 3 ...

Re: New document details who Ordained Elijah Able

This is interesting history for sure -- it's also interesting how it's being taken by members as faith promoting that the church wasn't actually racist under Joseph Smith at all (yea!) but only because Brigham through Joseph F Smith were racist but not because God told them to be (nevermind they cal...

Re: Uplift movement

LDS Living loves these kinds of articles. It's not fair to attack the guy's honesty as to what Steven Harper told him and where he was in the journey (and isn't it amazing how the article doesn't address ANY of the actual problems he had?), but for every one that comes back to a "believing" member (...

Re: "Love and respect" for all people

It's a political answer that mirrors every other answer they give publicly about issues where the church is clearly in the wrong (or at least against societal norms)... It's always some form of "We believe in free choice for all" or "We don't teach that, it hasn't been revealed yet" or "Those weren'...

Re: Book of Mormon DNA help

I tried reading the essay years ago, and none of it made any sense to me. So it worked. I think one of the main purposes of that essay is to make you feel like it's too confusing for ordinary people and that you can rest assured that smarter people in the church have it all figured out for you. The...

Re: Meeting with Bishop Tonight

Yea! Thanks for letting us know it went well -- nothing better than a conversation actually going better than feared. :)

So glad you have some space now to process and deal with everything, and as you said now the next meeting you can be more confident in whatever you want to discuss.

Re: Utah researcher: theory of religious influences in Utah LGBT suicides may be overblown

Today at school one of my DD's friends overheard a conversation wherein a girl was accusing my DD of being a lesbian; which she is not. The girl spreading this rumor is from a TBM family from the local ward. We've had problems with all of our daughters being bullied or made fun of or being left out...

Re: LDS fireside this Sunday on "Navigating Doubts"

That actually is pretty hilarious! I didn't even think to look at the images on the sign, I wasn't actually looking at the video most of the time it was playing. A cropped down version, with just the mole and the sign could be a great avatar! Or maybe it needs to become an icon for something that c...

Re: LDS fireside this Sunday on "Navigating Doubts"

Can we all agree that it's pretty awesome that he church used polygamy in the whack-a-mole graphic to show the dude with two women? Maybe it's just me that finds this hilarious... usually the church would go to great lengths to avoid putting such imagery to it. https://i.ibb.co/jhJ7bhx/renlund2.png

Re: Utah researcher: theory of religious influences in Utah LGBT suicides may be overblown

I think there is a simple way to tell. What is the suicide rate in Utah among LDS vs. non-lds children? Do they have this data? IF so, then what are the numbers? I'm not sure what to make of this guy. He talks a lot about the data not supporting the idea, but at no point does he go into the details...

Re: Not to Thread-Jack the doubting thread...

This is not some academic or esoteric question. Breaking sealings is serious business today and families are affected. The institutional church can claim that we work out our own salvation based on our individual choices and covenants. But the highest degree of the Celestial kingdom is reserved for...

I'm not going to say the researcher is wrong or lying because honestly he would have more access to info than me, but these stats speak for themselves: https://www.deseretnews.com/media/photos/hires/web-1781288.jpg https://i.ibb.co/s6MvHcS/utah-rising.jpg https://i.ibb.co/pdPbFPT/utah-depression-115...

Re: LDS fireside this Sunday on "Navigating Doubts"

I listened to this earlier as I was working and the summary was pretty spot on... this was not aimed at non-believers or those who are inactive. This was aimed to shore up those who are believers to not listen to anyone who comes to them with conflicting information. My favorite part of their talk w...

He said: 1- Gee and Muhlstein's apologetics are "abhorent" 2- He no longer engages in apologetics 3-He "wholeheartedly agrees" with "Dan's excellent assessment" 4- Brent Metcalfe (non-believing BoA critic) can attest to his "transformative journey" 5- His latest scholarship is "much more open to Da...

Re: RFM: missing scrolls & catalyst theories

It gave me some good stuff to add to my annotated BoA essay. Like the fact that Hauglid is cited 8 times in the endnotes, but has now joined Dan Vogel's (Joseph made it up) camp One thing here that I am confused on... I know that Hauglid came out and said he will no longer participate in apologetic...

I keep checking the episode list. I hope it will show up soon. You can view them at https://www.facebook.com/mormonstories/ -- you don't even need to have a FB account to watch the videos. They're near the top since he just recorded them the other day. I thought they were really great- especially w...

Re: LDS fireside this Sunday on "Navigating Doubts"

Just look at the Quentin Cook "face-to-face" where they promised to discuss the difficult church history topics. They went over I think 7 questions and 3 of them were complete fluff. The ones they didn't just gloss over they bounced off the apologists to kind of do that "Yeah I had some issues with ...
