Re: Interesting Bishopric Meeting today

Anyway, have any of you guys done or had a lesson on any of the essays, especially the race and the priesthood one? How did it go? Was it helpful at all or did it just stir the pot? If there's one thing I've learned from those essays, it's that the moment you look at them beyond face value it becom...

Re: Is NOM really "middle way" to any extent anymore?

NOM used to be more nuanced some years ago. I do feel more people are less afraid of the Church as they used to be, though the number of throwaway-accounts on reddit would suggest otherwise. The throwaway accounts on reddit I would almost guarantee have less to do with fear of the church and everyt...

Re: Bruce Porter, Apologist Fireside

My in-laws are fans of Bruce Porter. They urged me to watch a video from Brother Porter presenting on a rumored Nibley interpretation of a fragment of "The Book of Joseph" that was in church archives. Supposedly this was another fragment that was somehow connected with the Book of Abraham scrolls. ...

Re: Is NOM really "middle way" to any extent anymore?

I think the middle way is where you go when you're either trying to figure things out or have already figured things out but have no other choice. The thing about Mormonism is that even if it was true, it's not something I want any part of. Why would I want to be in a religion where polygamy is eter...

Re: RMN meets with NZ prime minister

Her uncle is about to become the Area President. Interesting that they don’t mention that she is a mother with her defacto partner. lol Also interesting that they flew to Wellington solely to visit with the PM. No other meetings were held that day. An expensive drop in considering they have two pri...

Re: Going in for surgery

The cataract surgery was without incident. My eye feels better today. Had a followup today and the Doc gave it an okay. I can tell that my reading glasses prescription has changed. Thanks for all the well wishes. All because you had the faith to be healed. Glad it went well and you are already clea...

Re: Is NOM really "middle way" to any extent anymore?

NOM has simply become a place for collaboration among regular posters living in mixed faith marriages. 90% of us here would walk away from church and NOM tomorrow if our spouses woke up to the falsehood of the Mormon Church. I would. Remember RunningMom and Jenny? NOM no longer caters to the middle...

Re: Going in for surgery

My dad had his done a while back and he absolutely loved the results. He could see so much better afterwards and I believe he did say they were sensitive to wind/drying out for a while but it went away. Good luck tomorrow with your surgery and recovery -- the world will look so much clearer afterwar...

Re: RMN meets with NZ prime minister

The ultimate return jab would be for the PM to take the BOM, thank them for it, then hand it to their assistant, telling them to file it under Fiction. Even if she had the Deseret News would've said: "And when PM Ardern was gifted the Book of Mormon she smiled and handed it to her assistant to be q...

Re: RMN meets with NZ prime minister

I don’t think any of this was a faux pas or social cluelessness done in good faith. I think it was a underhanded strike against a former member. I think it was intentional and malicious - but in the grand Mormon tradition, malicious with a smile. The church is spending a TON of tithing money on thi...

Re: RFM Mormon Apologetic Lecture Series

Clearly the church could use this to backtrack who you are, so I assume they must've identified you on the phone call with the SCMC. :) Really interesting to hear you as an apologist, although I came across the 'bullseyes in the Book of Mormon' podcast a while back with John Larsen and I couldn't be...

Re: Bruce Porter, Apologist Fireside

Porter says in the fireside that the church is asking and encouraging (paying?) him to do this stuff, but I am sure they would never endorse it publicly. That's basically the mission statement of apologetics. The church can encourage them and direct members to apologists, but they keep enough dista...

Re: Dumbest FairMormon quote ever? Horses and chariots

What I love about linguistic arguments like this is they are irrelevant to the English Book of Mormon. Lets say that through the linguistic route you describe the symbol(s) for "chariot" ended up on the Brass Plates and that to Mormon who was abridging things that the symbol(s) meant "human pulled ...

Re: RMN meets with NZ prime minister

I loved how they waited until almost the end to mention she left the church...

And giving someone who left the church a BoM with their name on it is either passive-aggressive or tacky. Take your pick.

Re: Dumbest FairMormon quote ever? Horses and chariots

All of this becomes moot when you realize that everything points to a tight translation, and that Joseph Smith used words no one had heard of (curelom, cumom, deseret) so that excuse goes out the window. That FAIR and people like Dan Peterson continue to try and just expand the playing field to keep...

Re: Bruce Porter, Apologist Fireside

Our stake did a fireside with Bruce Porter who is an LDS Apologist and student of Hugh Nibley. Bruce Porter claims: 1. The Three Facsimiles represent an endowment. The lion couch represents "The Death of God", the circle one represents the resurrection and Ascension, and the Throne one represent en...

Re: Russell's Long Journey out of Mormonism

This may have been expressed before, but it occurred to me that Pres. Nelson's emphasis on the sin of saying the "Mormon Church" instead of "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" just gives TBM's one more thing to feel offended and persecuted by. Gnats and Camels. Oh absolutely - ...

Re: Humor to Soften Truth

I hadn't realized that Brother Jake had a cardiac arrest. I can't find any information since December. Does anyone know if he's recovering? He's definitely recovering - he was briefly on an Infants on Thrones podcast a month or so ago after the LGBT Nov 15 revelation was trashed. The last detailed ...

Re: Moving on Up and Out!

Welcome! I've gotten a lot out of this group in having a place to bounce ideas off of, vent, and of course commiserate with. I'd say I wish I lived closer to the others here so I could attend some NOM lunches, but I'm pretty happy to not be in a Mormon area so outside of family involvement I am very...

Re: It's that time of year again!

Big Wig speakers announced for the FairVictoryForSatan Conference. Check out Elder Calister's quote. I think this is more and more the direction apologetics is heading: ignore pesky facts, stick to what you already "know" is true. Oh man that makes my blood boil - it's the Corbridge "ignore the sec...
