Re: Tribal rhetoric and the practice of

Today in sacrament meeting we had a young newly married couple speak. I generally give young people a pass when they give the indoctrinated speeches full of rhetoric but this particular young woman struck a nerve as the talk was particularly tuned to make my wife cry and give damaging messages to m...

Re: Kids in MFM

I just caught up on this thread - so sorry you're experiencing the whiplash here. I do like Alas' idea to bring it up and ask if it was just an angry outburst or something deeper, because while it's important to set boundaries it's also important (and in my opinion more difficult) to get honest exp...

Re: Kids in MFM

I've been trying to figure this out since the thread started, but I'm missing something. What does "MFM" stand for? Mixed-faith marriage, I believe, but someone can correct this if wrong. This is a tough situation, Angel. In many ways, I'm glad my kids were a lot older when I went through my faith ...

Re: Kids in MFM

I feel the pain of both sides here. After my divorce I doubled down on the TBM side as my X had her name removed before her church court because of her adultery. I had a few desperate attempts to try and keep them in but ultimately my X won and they had no more interest in church. There was a lot o...

Kids in MFM

So... my youngest DD stayed home from church with me today, her choice, and her TBM dad came home from church and yelled at her for it.... I stood up for her, told him we had a more productive morning than they did (we did laundry, and HW), that there was nothing wrong with her staying home with me....

So, the new handbook is pretty much the same as the old one?

That is a lovely book - you can get it as an audio book as well :)

Re: More random thoughts about the nature of God

This is another reason I am leaning towards Taoism:) Yeah, I think that's my next field of inquiry. I don't know much about it but from what I've read Taoism seems to have a breadth and flexibility that suits me. I'm still learning too - yes, it is very flexible, no rituals, no dogma, no hierarchy ...

Re: More random thoughts about the nature of God

There is a teaching about students who mistakenly worship and study a hand, rather than looking towards the object the hand is pointing towards. Love it. All of this harkens back to to an earlier discussion about how Elohim, even if he is a real entity, can't be God in the sense of designer and cre...

Re: More random thoughts about the nature of God

Tell me if I'm wrong about this. I believe it is perfectly valid to say "I believe in God, but not in Odin, Zeus, Yahweh, Elohim, or any of the other gods from antiquity that were forged in the image of man." (or as Alan Watts said, in the image of a bronze age benevolent tyrant). There is a teachi...

Ok - if you have not read it, this is one of the most beautiful boat stories I have read: https://karlijo.wixsite.com/beautyinthebreaking/home/i-got-off-the-boat?fbclid=IwAR2hrhIX91A1ydyNMy3X2lDq7E6WZ5eYNsBW3JK73D_hvjoMzNdfbtXOYJ4 Yes, it takes time to get "land legs", and I agree, the wall = yourse...

Re: Addiction: Everything we think about it is likely wrong

Yes, there are genetic predispositions to addiction ... I would like to add that for some, addiction starts due to environmental factors, and for others there really are genetic predispositions. As someone who has studied my family's genealogy  there are definitely some patterns... You know th...

Re: Elder Snow: Race essay was intentionally ambiguous

Really?? This sounds like mealy-mouthed excuse making. These guys claim "direct revelation" from God and this mess is what you get offered? Over one hundred and thirty years of "No, you can't hold the priesthood and you can't go to the temple cuz yer black and a descendent of Cain" and "It's not ou...

Re: Finally joined after lurking 6 years

For several of us going through a faith crisis is a slow process with our family and friends. It seems that way to me anyhow. I was listening to NPR about 6 years ago and they mentioned something about the Blacks and the priesthood essay that the church put out and after reading it I was like what?...

Re: Mass disclosure

So yesterday was FIL and soon-to-be-married sister. Today a couple more siblings. The wedding will eventually be the thing that razes it all to the ground, since DW will go but I will be waiting outside. My parents seemed pleased that I wasn't going inside, weird. DW wants me to have my official an...

Small steps!

So - my DH is going shopping today for (drum-roll) regular underwear!!! He decided he did not want to take his g's with him on our vacation.

Small steps. :D #Don'tLoseHope #JustLoveThem #Patience #WeCanDoThis!
