Re: Elder Gong: “Please don’t post that photo…”

POV: Full disclosure, I am a straight cis male. LGBTQIA+ people of course should have a platform for speaking for themselves and I seek to uplift their voices. Having said all that, IMO the LDS church is likely going to be very toxic for someone with these naturally occurring differences. It is not ...

Re: Saturday Sabbath

I have come to appreciate a "day of rest" regardless of what day of the week it is. I think our Western culture is so materialistic and such a treadmill that it is hurting us physically and emotionally. As early Christianity became more and more a pagan/gentile/non-Jewish religion and the earliest J...

Re: In the rubble of collapsed apologetics

I think there will always be "defenders of the faith". So I think apologetics will continue but hopefully in a less partisan and ad hominem attacking format. I do need to say that they sacked Fiona for her positions on the Holy Spirit and Heavenly Mother. She denies it and I imagine it is because sh...

Re: Mormons and Muslims

I think there are fascinating comparisons between the two. Both religions had a leadership crisis after their founders died: For Mormons the two major camps were Brigham Young and the Apostles which led to the UTA LDS church, and Emma, Lucy Mack and JS's children that created the Reorganized/Communi...

Re: Fight The New Drug

If we need evidence that porn is NOT harmful, here’s one: Back in the “good old days” when porn was illegal in the US (before internet when it could actually sort of be controlled) but legal in some European countries, they did comparisons in the number of rapes. Guess what? Rape is highest in coun...

Re: Fight The New Drug

Sorry, FTND is not based on hard-science. It does not have any randomized double-blind controlled studies in independent peer reviewed journals. It's pseudo-science and probably bad pseudo-science at best. Does porn have negative consequences? Yes. Are there moral and ethical issues about porn? Yes....

Re: Elder Gong: “Please don’t post that photo…”

So sad. So completely uninspired. Good people trapped in a toxic system with some toxic beliefs that end up saying and doing toxic things. Just awful. If there is a God, I would never want to be with or have a relationship with a higher power that endorsed or supported this in any way, shape, or for...

Re: Did anyone else hear voices?

I attended a leadership meeting the Boyd Packer back in the 1980. The only thing that I still remember was him saying he had never seen a Heavenly being, and had never heard an audible voice in response to his prayers. The point he was making was that we should just go with our feelings (Holy Ghost...

Re: Did anyone else hear voices?

I have never felt or heard an audible voice. I have had strong "spiritual" experiences of precognition a few times and also synchronicity a few times. I don't think these phenomenon are completely uncommon for humans. I think Bill Reel when he was active and trying to stay in the church and on the N...

Re: Konfession Time!

I really can't believe how my life has changed: (Snip…) I have to keep reminding myself and my DW that I have been at this A LOT longer than she has. She is in the very early stages and we both need to keep this in mind in order to try to understand one another. We also need to remember, that what ...

Re: Konfession Time!

I really can't believe how my life has changed: I drink alcohol on a semi-regular basis. Usually when we go out to a sit down restaurant. I also have alcohol in our home. In fact DW and I had Margaritas yesterday. She is taking alcohol very very slowly whereas I have moved quicker. I don't drink muc...

Re: Where was John the beloved buried? Or was he not buried?

That's an interesting question. I don't even know where Joseph Smith is buried. I'm surprised it's not a pilgrimage site at least on par with Elvis' grave. He's buried in Nauvoo. The church may not want to call attention to it since it is a family plot and is owned by the CoC. If I remember correct...

Re: One of these things is not like the others

Once again, the church shoots themselves in the foot with their own muskets and doubles down on supporting racism and anti-LGBTQ+ attitudes and policies thus creating a smaller and smaller tent. Mind you it's a billion dollar tent, but a small tent nonetheless.

Re: Where was John the beloved buried? Or was he not buried?

Also, Bart Ehrman will be coming out with a new book about the Book of Revelation in the next few years. I'm really looking forward to it. One of the themes he will push back against is the idea that the OT God is a god of wrath and vengeance and the NT God is a god of mercy and kindness. (eg. compa...

Re: Harry Reid Died

I remember my very conservative mother (may she also rest in peace) wanting Harry Reid excommunicated for his political beliefs. My sense is that he saw the Book of Mormon as a progressive scripture that spoke to him about poverty (which he grew up in) and the need to take action to alleviate it. I ...

Re: Granting small indulgences

I think there is some truth to this idea. But I don't think it's always as organized or done exactly in that way all the time. For example (from my POV): During the Monson era, Uchtdorf had a lot of latitude to say what he truly thought and believed as a member of the FP (IMO). Monson and Uchtdorf ...

Has anyone listed the things that the Lord has spoken about? Because I remember being told that the Lord has spoken on this subject. I guess He changed his mind. Those pesky Lehites. How can God keep track of them, after all? Well, He was laboring under the assumption that the North American Indian...

62% believe in hell Huh?! What? I thought we didn't believe in hell. Or at least the Catholic/Protestant version of it. That's sad. Another abandonment of the Mormon tradition towards something that I see as unhealthier and less unique in Christian theology. For some reason, Mormons have a deep des...
