Re: Sister Mishie's coming for dinner Thursday evening

Would you ever consider talking to them about the NOM website? Maybe explain to them what a NOM is etc, etc. You're probably more of missionary for the NOMs than they are for the TBMs if you add up all the people who have read your posts. I'm just curious....I know I would have been probably intere...

Re: Kish and Lavan

I've been trying to teach myself Spanish lately and I recently noticed that the Spanish word for "soul" is "alma." As a TBM, and even now as a non-believer, I would probably say it is a coincidence, but it wouldn't surprise if Joseph Smith borrowed from Spanish when he wrote the BOM. After all, he ...

Re: More Sunday School Confusion

The way the church uses these scriptures to teach that you will recieve material and other blessing from paying tithing is very disturbing to me. To me, it seems like fraud! Almost all of the TBM's I knew take this promise very seriously and pay tithing with the expectation that they will receive ma...

Re: Word of Wisdom question

In my TBM days, I interpreted the hot drinks and alcohol part of the WoW as only applying to "drinks." So, for me, if a food had coffee or alcohol flavoring in it I could eat it. (Though I know some TBMs that would think this was breaking the WoW Cold coffee and iced tea would be against the WoW bec...

Re: Conference Talk Review: Saturday Afternoon - Todd Christofferson, "Abide in My Love"

I've noticed a trend where the church leaders like to quote each other. I rarely hear them quote JS or any of the dead leaders. They quote each other in circles almost like they have all been instructed to quote only living leaders. I also noticed that it was the senior members of the Q15 he quotes...

Great review! It interested me enough in his talk to actually go now and read it! I testify that your analysis of this talk was truly NOM inspired!

Re: Closing the Little Factory

Have they ever denounced SWK's claims that masturbation will make you gay? I also remember a talk that said it will make you insane. As long as those things are still on the books there will be hard-cores digging them up and whacking (no pun intended) kids over the head with them. My personal favor...

Re: Tithing blessings and magical thinking

Here's the experiment I ran when I spent a year entertaining the thought the church was all BS. I didn't pay tithing and observed whether I was cursed for it. I dodged a big layoff, got a raise, got a bonus, life actually seemed much better that year. Of course, even without the raise and bonus it'...

Re: Tithing blessings and magical thinking

One last vivid memory of tithing cognitive dissonance was reading a newspaper story where a bankruptcy trustee was trying to go after LDS Inc for tithing paid to the church when the businessman should have been paying creditors. Clearly the magic did not work. I guess I am rambling somewhat but my ...

Re: tithing shake down (settlement)

THey started tithing settlement appointments here last week and plan to finished by thanksgiving. THey have frequently reminded everyone you don't need to be paid up through the year, just to that point in time. I think they're hoping to free up their December schedules. (emphasis added) Absolutely...

Re: Church's Communistic Structure Stifles Innovation

I generally agree with the point of the opening post. The church tries to use a McDonalds franchise model so, like McDonalds where you can go anywhere in the world and expect to get a standard Big Mac, in the church you can go anywhere and attend a ward and get the same doctrine, meeting schedule, e...

Re: Do you drink coffee?

My best guess is that he didn't what to pay for anyone else's coffee. That would be considered aiding and abetting the breaking of the WoW. Practically a WoW violation in itself!

Re: Minor updates in the korihor family

WoW! That's bold! Probably scared off the Holy Ghost for everybody! Did you think about that before you did what you did? Just kidding....It would get judgmental looks in the Utah ward I grew up in. But the current ward I'm in now, outside of Morridor, an active member could probably get away with i...

Re: How did you find the new site?

I found it from Reddit. I found Reddit and really started using it from the original NOM site. Quick questions: Do you know what is going on with the original NOM site? Is it going to come back one day? That might be awkward if there are two NOM websites. Also, have you thought about advertising thi...

Re: Was JS the only person who claimed to use seer stones?

Hiram Page did. D&C 28 is Joseph Smith smacking Hiram Page down so he doesn't have a rival for revealing things using magic rocks. "My magic rock is better than your magic rock". How did I ever believe this nonsense? I had to go read that for myself. Check out verse 11. The word "stone" is annotate...

Re: Calculating our tithing.

I've developed a number of legitimate "tithing shelters" to shelter my income from tithing. For example, for income going into 401k, Roth, and other retirement accounts I don't pay tithing on it until I withdraw the money in retirement. (I will pay this tithing in retirement, assuming, of course, th...
