Re: Preparing for general conference

Not much. I'm planning on being very underwhelmed by yet another "historic" conference.

I am a little curious about what they're going to do, though. How will this conference be different? How will the current pandemic affect conference?

Re: Does covid-19 care if you're righteous or wicked?

If COVID-19 really is God punishing the wicked, it's going to be more like the global flood than Sodom and Gomorrah.

Except most of the people affected will get better instead of dying.

Re: Supporting a Beneficial Mythology

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I'm kind of drawn to druidry. I believe that it is complete nonsense, but I wonder if I would have an easier time with metaphor and mythology if I wasn't so close to it. When I start talking or thinking about Mormon mythology, I just can't get out of my he...

The statistical report has always been done with the audit report, but starting last year they're not doing the membership report during conference. It should be available on the website, though.

Re: What do you make of John C Bennett?

I've seen enough to believe that John C Bennett was a scoundrel.

In this case, however, I think that he only got in trouble because he got caught. Joseph didn't want other people to find out that he was doing the same thing as Dr. Bennett.

Re: Recent Three Nephites sightings?

Same here. I served a mission a decade or so ago.

I have never heard any serious 3 Nephites stories in my life, but I have heard lots of 3 Nephites jokes. I don't think that people really take that seriously anymore.

Re: What's left in your transition?

I'm not angry anymore. I don't trust Joseph Smith, but there's no more anger. He taught some good things and some bad things, did some terrible things, and manically jumped from one doctrine to another until it's hard to consistently define anything about Mormonism. I feel like I've been basically a...

This is fantastic! It really gives words to what I feel.

It's too bad that we haven't had more J Golden Kimballs.

Re: WoW pisses me off!

I think that the gospel can be beautiful in it's simplicity and clarity, but LDS doctrine tacks on a whole lot of extra speculation, requirements, and contradictions.

Re: What was your first NOM thought?

I don't remember how old I was, but I was trying to find something that I had misplaced. My mom said that I should say a prayer and ask for help finding it, and I thought that sounded really dumb.

I think that I was always more intellectually attached to the church than emotionally invested.

Re: Your Random LDS Questions

I've read that the Q70 could recreate the Q12 because D&C 20 says that they are equal in authority, which means that they also have all the keys. Does that mean that the Stake High Councils also have all the keys? D&C 20 says that they are also equal in authority. Maybe everybody has all the keys. I...

Holy envy

I have been listening to N.T. Wright talk about Paul and Judaism, and I'm feeling a lot of complicated emotions about it. This isn't my first time exploring non-LDS theology, but it's hitting me a bit harder this time. I feel like Wright understands the New Testament and the historical context, and ...

Re: Mission age limits men vs. women

Yes, the rules are different for men and women. Women have a minimum age, the same as men, but they don't have a maximum age. They are also able to serve as many times as they want.

The church doesn't trust men.

Re: If the church were to admit and apologize...

If the church were to rewrite their narratives, apologize for damage done, and be a much more open and forgiving organization it would go a long way towards earning respect. I think it would probably end up being a church that was inspired by Joseph Smith instead of a church that was literally revea...

Re: Really living the Word of Wisdom

Isn't it just a little bit ridiculous? The Word of Wisdom is an identity marker, but we mostly ignore it to enforce an officially interpreted version of it. I'm not planning on drinking beer (it's better for your health not to, I don't need to drink my carbs, and drinking can be an expensive habit),...

Re: John Taylor's (alleged) 1886 revelation on polygamy/everlasting covenant?

I think it's legitimate, and it is definitely talking about polygamy. It certainly agrees with John Taylor's views on polygamy, and aligns very well with the D&C. And yes, it was never presented to the church. I don't believe that John Taylor even had an opportunity to present it in General Conferen...

Re: General Konference Predictions

I'm sure that there will be a lot more talking about staying in the church and not worrying about church history. That's been a constant for years. I wouldn't be surprised if something changed that made it a little bit easier to stay in the church. I couldn't say what, and I doubt that it will be on...
