Re: FIGHT THE OLD DRUG: PURITY CULTURE

Amen! I think this is part of much of the damage that is done in the church. I think the claim to Truth is probably part of the issue. Because the church is True, chastity is True. And any pet peeve of on of our old man prophets is True. I have tried to root our purity culture for myself and my kids...

Re: DW wearing garments again?

That's gotta be hard. Of course the only thing you can and should do is support her like you said, but it must still hurt. I think it might be similar to last year with no in-person church. It was awesome. The free time to do whatever we felt was best with our time was nice. Not hearing a bunch of s...

Re: Saturday Sabbath

...What is so difficult about doing nothing? ...Take it easy on Saturday. That's what God wants and the message is repeated a lot in the Bible so treat yourself to some rest before Sunday reunion. The opportunity cost of doing nothing can be pretty high. That's 1/7th of my life that I could spend r...

Re: Love

Thank you for all the great replies, lots to consider. For what it's worth, I support mask wearing at church right now and agree that the Bishop's should [ETA "not"] have to deal with aggressive anti-mask folks. This was just the situation I saw the use of love as a shield. But the love shield could...

Re: Fight The New Drug

I am not sure I can add anything here, but here goes. I am genuinely surprised at the responses in this thread. Bonfire, you've made claims that rely on a bunch of assumptions that aren't common with many here. A lot of those assumptions have hurt people here or appear to hurt people generally. From...

Re: Sealed to the church by shame

“The antidote to shame is understanding” - Paul Conti M.D. (Psychiatrist) Psychiatrist Paul Conti was on The Drive podcast this week and made this comment (around 1:34:00) which I really liked and thought added to this thread. The podcast is about trauma and how that often leads to shame and unhealt...

Love

My county recently reinstated an indoor mask mandate so the bishop emailed the ward requesting people wear masks. He mentioned that he was reaching out in a spirit of love. That seemed weird on an email simply sharing information. Of course, he's probably heard a lot from ward members who are agains...

Re: Sealed to the church by shame

That's an interesting quote which gets to the heart of the scheme to convince you that you are broken and sell you the cure. I think the shame acts as a false proof of the church's narrative. They tell you that it is bad and that you will feel bad, then when you do it confirms that they are correct....

Nice job Hallew! Sounds like you nailed it. Talks from the heart are harder to prepare, but more rewarding to share.

That was nice of you to also cover in YW too.

Re: Go Webb!

Go Webb indeed! Looks like it's still on track so far in it's complicated unfolding process. They announced today that due to the great launch by the Ariane 5 rocket the Webb telescope should have enough fuel to keep the scope up there and working for significantly longer than 10 years, great news. ...

Re: Why Did I Teach Primary for 8 Years?

I think putting the undesirables in primary has a couple reasons. First and foremost, the ward leadership doesn't have to deal with you. Second, it's a calling that unorthodox members are more likely to accept it; you can tailor the lessons to fit your worldview and all it requires is an hour a week...

Re: How do those of you in mixed faith marriages raise your kids?

It is a struggle raising kids in a mixed faith marriage after a faith transition because the disaffected spouse not only doesn't feel church is important, in many cases they feel it is harmful. So the situation changes from both parents treating church activity as vital, similar to how getting an ed...

Re: What Charities Do You Support

We donated to the Utah Food Bank this month.

My older kid pulled up their website and a charity rating website and told us all about how almost all of the money goes to getting food to people so it is a good charity.

Kanpai!

In Japan people say "Kanpai!" in the same situations you would say "Cheers!" in the US. At Disneyland recently my wife, kids and I all raised our glasses of lemonade and mint juleps and shared a "Kanpai!" My 7 year old apparently enjoyed it, because at church yesterday he stopped me from drinking th...

Re: The Assumptions

Let’s take this discussion back about 6,000 years when the world was created and Adam and Eve found themselves alone in the garden of Eden. Their knowledge was limited to their surroundings. From the movies I’ve seen, their life was simple. Adam wandered around behind some bushes looking for sheep ...

Re: The Assumptions

It's a long way from these assumptions before you finally decide to renew your temple recommend and start paying tithing. Oh definitely, those are just some of the lower level assumptions I could think of. There's lots more, and that makes a good faith religious discussion with a TBM difficult. I a...

Re: Consistent Logic Not Required

In the beginning of my faith crisis, I went to a non-lds cathedral in Scotland and "felt" the spirit. I told my wife that this kind of confirmed to me that the "spirit" is not always a reliable indicator of truth. She said maybe it was a holy place where the spirit could dwell. This makes sense, bu...

The Assumptions

My TBM dad will often bring up church stuff to me. He's old and I appreciate that we can still spend some time together so I try not to get to bothered by it. But it's impossible not to be bored with it and think he is off in a make believe universe coming up with ideas that are as real as The Aveng...

Re: Consistent Logic Not Required

Great points all around. The point is that you cannot apply consistent thinking or the church falls apart. Just look at how members will gush over advances in medicine or claim someone is guilty over DNA and then completely dismiss all of the science that shows the church isn't true... or the specia...

Consistent Logic Not Required

Moroni's Promise that we can know truth by good feelings makes it so consistent logic is not required for something to be true. Specifically for the church to "be true". It's more important to have many good feelings than to build a consistent story. So you get mundane stories turned into miracles a...
