Re: Should I get a Priesthood blessing?

I'm so sorry about your eye Oliblish! I hope you recover fully. Regarding the priesthood blessing, I would try to hear it as your daughter saying she loves you and cares for you and wants to help you, and respond as though that's what she said. Something like "it means a lot to me that you would off...

Re: I Learned How to Judge as a Mormon

I think the church teaches members to judge themselves first and foremost, and that for most members, all other judgment flows from that. When I let go of judging myself - when I realized I was terrible at it, and the commandment to "judge not" applied just as easily to self-judgment - I largely st...

Re: Radio West - Doubt

Just watched someone who has been talking about faith crisis on his podcasts, but who works for the church! :D Hello! Sure, it’s ok to question - BUT IT’S NOT OK TO HAVE WRONG ANSWERS. Lol Totally. And these kind of "address what people are saying/going through, but then take a left turn before com...

Re: What do you believe about it now?

Does anyone find the back of President Nelson's gravestone to be faith-affirming? https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E1TqYpnXEAAr365.jpg https://www.sltrib.com/religion/2021/05/13/latest-mormon-land/ It's disgusting. He used his power to memorialize himself with a priceless piece of my history. It's gaudy...

Re: I Learned How to Judge as a Mormon

To judge is to be human. For me I would say I learned what to judge as a mormon, and it was all wrong. We are judgement machines and I don't think there is a way to stop it. So I've tried to change what I judge from swearing and modesty and caffeine and R-rated movies and church attendance and garme...

Re: Moving out of Utah

Welcome Aphrodite! I'm sorry you are made to feel guilty for being yourself. It sounds like you are a thoughtful person who doesn't deserve that guilt. I think getting away from home for a while would do any young adult good to see different ways of life. In your situation I think it would be even b...

Radio West - Doubt

Jill Lepore was on with Doug Fabrizio on Radio Wes t this week to discuss season 2 of her podcast which is about the way doubt has evolved in the public theater over the past century. It's been interesting, and touches on a lot of the things that led me out of my faith in the mormon church. One inte...

Re: 'Do you think I could ever be happy outside of the church?'

That's hard jfro! It's interesting that she would ask that question, because it's a question I am sure you would love her to sincerely consider in good faith. But she did not mean it that way. There does not appear to be space in her mind/soul for a good faith discussion about being out of the churc...

Mormons are Nice

In "Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life" James Hollis says the following when discussing reflexive kindness: Indeed the stakes are even higher, for studies of totalitarian systems, or any society with strong collective pressures, show that through intimidation most, if not all, citizens becom...

Re: Extended Family Baptism

Hmmm.... Joseph Dodged a bullet (actually a flaming sword) when he agreed to polygamy. Emma had to accept polygamy, if only for a little while, so she got to live another 30 years. Yeah, it sounds like your sister's talk was terrible. :( Hahaha, phew! I'm glad we didn't have to find out what God wo...

Extended Family Baptism

My sister's kid got baptized recently and I went to be part of the family. My BIL was kind enough to invite me up to be part of the confirmation circle which I accepted; he knows where I stand and I treat those as family events and appreciate being included. My sister gave the talk on baptism and wa...

Re: New Apologetic Movie: Witnesses

I can't tell you how many times people have thrown the witnesses back at me on the website as proof that it's all true. "They never lost their testimony in the BoM even after leaving the church, which tells you that they really saw the plates." And since the evidence is so flimsy for for and agains...

Re: New Apologetic Movie: Witnesses

How about Oliver Cowdery and his Magick Wands? Um... I mean: Divining Rods. (I'm just guessing he had more than one, maybe he had a singular Magick Wand...) When you have the "gift of the rod," you better use it or lose it. Didn't Boyd K. Packer say that we could idle the "gift of the rod" and it w...

Apparently this meme is 7 years old, but it's new to me and seems to apply here. Just replace Jesus' face with whoever is trying to control your sexuality. Mom, is that you?

Re: Is forgiveness required?

I don't think forgiveness is required. I think letting go is beneficial in that it frees you from the weight of carrying the pain, opening up the brain space, dumping the thoughts occupying your mind. And for some, forgiveness is a path to that letting go. The wanting for a justice that isn't comin...

But the suburban republican mormons interested in politics have a history of dragging the Utah republican party around even though they are not a majorit...

Re: Rise of the "Nones"

Putting my "after" hopes in terms of fixing problems: the time and energy to do the things I want to do, and everyone finally realizes that we were all wrong but good enough as we were for whatever - if anything - is in charge of everything. It's quite a change for us to go from the mormon version ...

Re: Rise of the "Nones"

If you were to free your mind to choose and create your own version of heaven, what would it look like? Mine - a mountain community of friends and neighbors, a Thomas Kincade house near river and hot springs. A sandy path to the ocean. It's what I visualize when someone dies, what I imagine before ...

Re: What do you believe about it now?

I have not had any experiences that justify belief in divine intervention in my life, nor in the lives of those I am familiar with. Many of the stories I've heard from others are not compelling enough to justify belief, and other stories are not provable enough to justify that belief either. Some of...
