Re: Extended Family Baptism

Hmmm.... Joseph Dodged a bullet (actually a flaming sword) when he agreed to polygamy. Emma had to accept polygamy, if only for a little while, so she got to live another 30 years. Yeah, it sounds like your sister's talk was terrible. :( Hahaha, phew! I'm glad we didn't have to find out what God wo...

Extended Family Baptism

My sister's kid got baptized recently and I went to be part of the family. My BIL was kind enough to invite me up to be part of the confirmation circle which I accepted; he knows where I stand and I treat those as family events and appreciate being included. My sister gave the talk on baptism and wa...

Re: New Apologetic Movie: Witnesses

I can't tell you how many times people have thrown the witnesses back at me on the website as proof that it's all true. "They never lost their testimony in the BoM even after leaving the church, which tells you that they really saw the plates." And since the evidence is so flimsy for for and agains...

Re: New Apologetic Movie: Witnesses

How about Oliver Cowdery and his Magick Wands? Um... I mean: Divining Rods. (I'm just guessing he had more than one, maybe he had a singular Magick Wand...) When you have the "gift of the rod," you better use it or lose it. Didn't Boyd K. Packer say that we could idle the "gift of the rod" and it w...

Apparently this meme is 7 years old, but it's new to me and seems to apply here. Just replace Jesus' face with whoever is trying to control your sexuality. Mom, is that you?

Re: Is forgiveness required?

I don't think forgiveness is required. I think letting go is beneficial in that it frees you from the weight of carrying the pain, opening up the brain space, dumping the thoughts occupying your mind. And for some, forgiveness is a path to that letting go. The wanting for a justice that isn't comin...

Re: Mormons and Romney

The suburban republican mormons interested in politics hate Romney, but the suburban republican mormons uninterested in politics seem to like him. But the suburban republican mormons interested in politics have a history of dragging the Utah republican party around even though they are not a majorit...

Re: Rise of the "Nones"

Putting my "after" hopes in terms of fixing problems: the time and energy to do the things I want to do, and everyone finally realizes that we were all wrong but good enough as we were for whatever - if anything - is in charge of everything. It's quite a change for us to go from the mormon version ...

Re: Rise of the "Nones"

If you were to free your mind to choose and create your own version of heaven, what would it look like? Mine - a mountain community of friends and neighbors, a Thomas Kincade house near river and hot springs. A sandy path to the ocean. It's what I visualize when someone dies, what I imagine before ...

Re: What do you believe about it now?

I have not had any experiences that justify belief in divine intervention in my life, nor in the lives of those I am familiar with. Many of the stories I've heard from others are not compelling enough to justify belief, and other stories are not provable enough to justify that belief either. Some of...

I got my 2nd dose of Moderna last week with milder side effects than the first dose. Just a sore arm, and this time not as sore nor for as long.

Re: Keys To Sexuality

I saw a post I think on Facebook but maybe it was here where the church says that the libido is a 'myth.' For some reason that just struck me as something that can only happen from an organization that has a need to control you - again it's completely contradicting what we know about nature/people/...

Keys To Sexuality

The Natasha Helfer ex-ing saga got me thinking about the brighamite sect of the mormon church's view of sexuality. I had a little metaphor I used to make sense of it before: You keep the keys to your sexuality until you are married, then you give them to your spouse. Only your spouse is allowed to u...

Re: Rise of the "Nones"

I identify as "spiritual but not affiliated". It allows me to escape the stigma of athiest, escape labels of fence-sitting ignorant agnostic (not true labels, but it feels like that is the opinion of many), escape any labels of religious groups, and not offend any religious groups as being 'anti-go...

Re: Forced Turning Point

History Lesson! Our first bishop was poor (temporary situation, he had just finished his PhD) and several families (us included) pitched in to buy him a painting for his office. He took that painting with him when he was released. All bishops since then have been somewhat wealthy and purchased thei...

Rise of the "Nones"

Interesting article on the "Nones" , those who select "None" on a surveys asking about their faith, was posted on 538 today. Highlights include: - Most religious defectors come from Mainline Protestants and Catholics - The "Nones" as a bloc are about as big as Catholics or Evangelicals - Most "None...

Re: MIL Innocently Indoctrinating my Kids

I had a situation similar to yours recently. My very TBM MIL was visiting and somehow sucked me into a convo about the church's $100 billion fund. I raised my concerns, and she said in front of my children, "Well, you've always been rebellious." (Raised mormon, seminary, RM, EQP, etc. but I don't s...

Re: The true order of tithing

Not to thread jack too much, but I have a cool tithing story. So the missus and I had a bit of a fight over tithing and my taxes back in March. I have a little side business, and how I pay tithing is that whatever profit I made on the business, which is minuscule, I pay tithing on. Since Sis. M par...

Re: What are you doing to protect your family against the virus?

Anyone have no side effects from the vaccine? My arm was not even sore, just nothing. Anyone heard the “why” behind lack of side effects? Did they just inject me with water? My husband had a slightly sore arm, about like a small bruise. His sister claims it is because we had covid. My DW had a sore...

Re: What are you doing to protect your family against the virus?

Got myself a vaccine/mark of the beast/Bill Gates tracking microchip/whatever today. My arm hurts like hell. I got my first dose of the Moderna vaccine a week ago and it was 4 days before my arm felt better. Much more sore than with a flu shot, like a bad bruise. A couple days ago I noticed an infl...
