WML - Are you in town this weekend?

I got a phone call from my ward mission leader (WML) Saturday. He's a really nice guy, he has stopped by to help with random stuff on multiple occasions. But he started the call all high pressure on me: WML: Hi Linked, are you and your family in town this weekend? Me: (Nope, you don't get that info ...

Re: Baptized my Son

Thank you all for the kind words. It definitely went as well as it could have. Congrats! Glad it worked out for you. I will be facing this in a couple of years. It's too bad they don't allow them to wait until they are adults right? They don't really get to examine both sides and make an informed de...

Baptized my Son

I baptized my youngest son recently. DW and I are in a good, stable spot right now, so the lead up was stress and conflict free. Having been thru it before took a lot of the unknown out, so I didn't have to stress out about unlikely scenarios as much. My son wanted me to baptize him and his recently...

Re: Evolution essay

This has become a church of mealy-mouthed tap dancers. We are rational thinkers who embrace science... when it suits us. We condemn racist language of the past, but only in the abstract, we won't condemn any specific statement by any specific leader, because we know they wouldn't lead us astray. We...

Re: Tea Questions

I missioned in Japan and didn't notice a significant hiccup with the no tea requirement. We would teach it all together with alcohol, tobacco, etc. Often we would bring local members along who could help them navigate it better. They would always stress that it is tea from the specific tea plant tha...

Re: Holy Fetch!

What?!?! Congrats RR and Sis. RR! It sounds like you are there for her and not pushing her, she is lucky to have you as she goes through this. You probably know this already, but I thought it was helpful. I was talking with my therapist about empathy recently and he mentioned that with empathy and a...

Re: Is it wrong to be apathetic to the world’s problems?

You've only got so much time and attention, and millions of people who want it. Many of those are good causes that are worthy of time and attention. But you can't care about/worry about/fix them all. Be deliberate in the things that you care about and care for them well. The only person you must imp...

Re: "Earthly Identifiers" or "Don't Be Gay"

They want to take your "self" from you. Child of God is just as much a label as Gay, but it's the one they have assigned you so it's ok. Any self-labelling you do that isn't in line with their views takes you closer to discovering yourself separate from their teachings, which leads to apostasy. Ask ...

Re: Estabishing Boundries

(Great advice) Sometimes I struggle with interactions with others who don't seem to have their own boundaries figured out or do not voice them. I worry that I am trampling their boundaries, but I don't know because they don't tell me. I feel like I have to guess at their boundaries, and if I'm wron...

Re: Unbundled Corruption and the LDS Church

I think there are definitely corrupt things happening, but the scale is surprisingly small. They are engaging in Grand Theft, but with tiny amounts compared to what is available to be stolen. Maybe that is part of the big temple building push, increasing the scale of the operation but using the same...

Re: Destigmatizing Therapy

I thought this post would be the perfect place to share some good news. I’m so excited to share that yesterday I received an acceptance letter into the MSW program that was my first choice. I was really nervous that I wouldn’t get in since the acceptance rate is less than 30% and I know of two othe...

Re: End-of-history illusion and Life after mormonism

I’d like to respond with a quick drawing I just thought of. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/d9/a3/66/d9a3669f209dbd232ae4f2cd86e85c25.jpg Is it really that bad to let go of the prescribed path a bit later in life? When you have more knowledge, wisdom, and money? I mean sure we missed out on a bunch ...

Re: End-of-history illusion and Life after mormonism

You have every right to these feelings. I feel it too. For me it also includes this nagging sense of urgency and/or anxiety of making up for lost time of being who I always wanted to be but I was constrained by Mormonism. I'm in my 50s now and it's hard to let go of feelings of bitterness and resen...

Re: Skewed Morality

I was talking about going to a Weird Al concert with my BIL the other day ... Forget all of the morality stuff. you're still going to see Weird Al anyway, right? I saw him about 30 years ago and I'm kind of amazed to hear he's still at it. The show was very goofy, but fun. And there were fireworks....

Petty Theft - Local law enforcement pulling someone over and demanding $20 Is that like being pestered by the executive secretary to go into tithing settlement and the bishop is happy with your tithing contributions but then hits you up to make better fast offerings? Hahaha, it's amazing that peopl...

Re: Skewed Morality

Well you know, all the weird rules were never about teaching you morality anyway. Think about temple recommend interviews - nothing about compassion, or kindness, or Christ-like behavior, just a bunch of more or less uniquely Mormon rules like WoW and wearing your garments day and night and stuff l...

End-of-history illusion and Life after mormonism

I have been angry at the church for stealing my "self" and my life from me. I was indoctrinated into an apparently false dogma from birth, and coerced into giving years of my life, money, identity, and beliefs to. I am particularly angry at the church's role in my long term life choices. My schoolin...

Re: Unbundled Corruption and the LDS Church

I was thinking more about this and I don't think the comparison to a government makes sense. With government corruption you have powerful people trading political or policy favors for money. They need the support of the rich to get ahead. In the church's case, the organization is now wealthy enough ...
