Re: Strange things in the Bible

But if I remember right, isn't it true in LDS theology that the devil cannot influence kids under the age of 8? Yes, this is true but he seems to do very well keeping older white men in the dark about their own biases and ignorance..... I agree with that. When are they going to become intellectuall...

Re: Strange things in the Bible

Could you give us an exact reason why an innocent toddler should be told about ( the myth) of Satan, or the abstract philosophical discussion of good vs. evil? Something more specific than your wife has ocd? Why is it not enough, at age 3, to learn that God love us and wants us to be obedient and lo...

Re: Strange things in the Bible

Having raised four children, I wouldn't even raise either of these subjects with my kids until they were six or seven years old. Or if they happen to bring it up themselves. Three years old? Kinda young there.... But that's just me. I agree 3 years old is too young. Hell, I had nightmares about Inj...

Strange things in the Bible

My wife recently discussed talking to our 3 year old about Satan. We were trying to decide perhaps how to approach the subject. I remember my parents reading to us bible stories from a children's bible and there being a picture of satan in there with hooves. I wasn't really scared but I think later ...

Re: It's not even wrong

Ugh CFM! My wife is really pushing this. I guess in a home setting though, we can more easily give our perspective. And this is important I think. I say teach both sides to the kids so that when they are of age (or if we can get out before then) can more easily make an informed decision about the ch...

Great responses guys! Here are more examples like Mormonism from the same area "burned over district". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burned-over_district

Why did Joseph Smith return from Iowa to go to Carthage?

Apparently, Joseph Smith was going to escape with Hyrum and Porter Rockwell to the west rather than stay in Nauvoo to face charges of treason for enforcing Marshall law and inciting a riot in destroying the printing press. My wife asked me why he returned (because if he was really a con artist he pr...

A possible source of Joseph Smith's ideas?

I was watching the history of Christianity on a great courses lecture and they spoke about Munster's rebellion which sounded a lot like what Joseph Smith did. Here is a link to Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%BCnster_rebellion

Re: Christmas, Bah! Humbug!

My faith crisis caused me to question god and christianity and wouldn't you know it there are problems. From the virgin mary not being a virgin to half the books in the new testament being forgeries. So when traditional christmas music comes on it's almost like how you feel during testimony meeting ...

Re: It's been a while. What next

I'm going to plus one on the bandaid rip! But that being said, I only did the bandaid rip with my local leaders. Our effort to fade out was putting us on the project list and we and our one kid at home were being harassed for interviews and callings, etc. After I wrote the email and sent it off, ma...

Re: Extended Family Relationships

I absolutely believe from personal experience on both sides of the fence that soft shunning in mormonism is a real experience. The awkwardness between ardent believers and former believers is tangible. We are living and breathing cognitive dissonance and the cause of discomfort to those still insid...

Extended Family Relationships

Does anyone else feel like their extended family relationships are more distant especially since they have discovered that you are now an unbeliever? I didn't make it to the family thanksgiving dinner because my wife just had a baby. But I texted a couple of siblings afterwards about things and neve...

Re: The challenges of attending church

I found just two people I could relate to and invited them to do stuff outside of church, like a family bbq. Then we went to late night movies we knew our wives would not watch like John Wick. I felt better about going after that. If I didn’t have them, I wouldn’t have gone. I brought a book and en...

Re: The challenges of attending church

I have just the opposite problem. I have lots of friends at church, and enjoy the association with them, but not church! We even have a standing invite from one family for Sunday dinner every week. So I go to talk with my friends. That's nice to have friends! Do you think that they would still be y...

Re: The challenges of attending church

I feel the same way. I don’t have anyone at church I look forward to seeing it talking to. Few come up and talk to me, and I’m not even open about my faith. I just feel no desire to go to church. So, I go with DW every 2-3 weeks. Who ever decided church was needed weekly? I certainly don’t need it....

Re: The challenges of attending church

In my case the key to survival is reading my kindle books during sacrament meeting and getting out of there as soon as the closing prayer ends. I find that 1hr only attendance keeps my wife from having to play the single church widow with our kids and it provides me with just enough time listening ...

Re: The challenges of attending church

When i was active, the Ward members weren't my friends. I do have friends that are lds but we are not friends because of church. I simply am not interested in what the mormons in my area are interested in. Mostly sports. Pro, college and local schools. Activities revolve around sports. Area basketb...

The challenges of attending church

If you're like me, you would rather stay home instead of attending church. When I attend I feel like I don't have many friends. The only ones that act friendly are the bishop and eqp because I believe they have a better understanding of where I'm at (and they would probably like to see me "come back...

Re: "I wish I could talk with Linked like this!"

Good luck Linked with having a good conversation with your sister. Hopefully it will go like it did with your parents and then hopefully she will at least have more empathy and understanding for where you're at.
