Re: Mormon Channel: How to Cope When a Loved One Changes Beliefs

I agree with what everyone has said here about this video after watching it - and I will add that it's a tad concerning that the atheist dude gets zero airtime to share his beliefs, his thoughts and feelings tend to take a back seat to the "believing member," and clearly their experience is theirs, ...

Re: Behold! The Fruits of E Oaks' Oct 2018 Talk Begin to Ripen!

That was...unbelievable. Here's what kills me. In her epic rant, this "sister" calls LGBTQ persons all sorts of horrible epithets, and I quote directly from her piece, and it's quite a list: they are unnatural, perverted, immoral, deceptive, destroying families and ruining lives, drama kings/queens,...

Re: Bill Reel's new project: Mormon Document Repository

Man, how does that guy find the time and energy for all of his projects? I don't even have time to post on NOM as much as I used to. I have the same question for Bill! But what a great idea, and there are some great documents on there that I have to search for, and it's great to have it all in one ...

Re: Wheat & Tares Series on Middle Way Mormonism

I've been out of the bloggernacle loop for so long I haven't checked in with W&T for a while. Thanks for highlighting this! I too am struck in reading this by how much these are all individual journeys for middle-way Mormons; and you're correct, Ghost, and I agree that it's a similar journey for TBM...

Re: Saints book vs heartland model

What a great find - that's hilarious that Grow was forced to slap this on the church website. I'm sure the church doesn't know quite what to do with the Meldrum conundrum. On the one hand, JS REALLY believed that the local indigenous groups were from the lost tribes of Israel, and Meldrum just buys ...

Re: What do you all do for tithing settlement?

I just email it in. I haven't been to tithing settlement in a couple of years - I finally used the "when they show me their financials, I'll show you mine" line last year, and it elicited a chuckle from the bishop. So I think he expects another email this year. But then again, I've won leadership ro...

Re: Faith Crisis Report

Wow. Thanks for the find, RR. I'm assuming, and it's a big assumption, that Greg Prince et al have been rather frustrated by the lack of action given this report by the corp, and have allowed it to pop up in other locales. Wild times, to be sure. They fucking know all the problems. They've known sin...

Re: Oaks Saturday morning talk.

Let's talk about the one positive of his asinine talk. Mormon youth are now having to choose between believing an arrogant, hateful, out-of-touch old man and their gay friends who they know are great people. President Oaks thinks he is asserting his authority, but I can promise you he has planted l...

Re: Two Churches - I'm finally starting to get it

I was thinking about this as well given the different messages I heard over conference weekend, and you put it more succinctly then I would. It doesn't even seem to be the same church, the messages I heard. And the divide has reached the top - look at how Oaks and Christofferson's talks demanded tha...

Re: Temple endowment-ancient origins

Yeah, that was bizarre, especially given the Masonic origins of the temple. It's amazing what you see when you actually know stuff. Even more bizarre to me was Nelson's claim that there was "power" in using the proper name of the church. What power would that be? To bore all the people you talk to w...

Re: Dallin Oaks - a fantasy

Excellent, Mr. Hagoth Dickens. In a couple of decades, I'm sure the story of how Elder Oaks was transfigured into the growly visage of BKP will make the rounds. People who live in Brigham City will claim that they were there in the conference centre when "the light rested upon Elder Oaks, he looked ...

Re: 2 Hour Church = 10 Hour Home Church

But isn't the bait and switch the entire point of the exercise? When your children go inactive, or find out that Joseph Smith married 14 year olds behind his wife's back, and you don't straighten them out, whose fault is it? "Well, we had 3 hours to smarten your brood up, and now it's your job. You ...

Great to see you doing this once again, MoPag. It's a lifesaver for those of us who can see what's really going on with these talks - keeping my critical thinking skills on the up and up. Unfortunately I'm not in a position this year to comment at all due to work commitments, and I will miss the rea...

It's always good to teach kids about helping the less fortunate, and to have perspective on how bad things can be for other people. Then, to have then give of themselves voluntarily, is a great moment for a parent. That's cool!

Re: Hans and Brigitta Mattson, 2nd and 3rd Witnesses for the 2nd Anointing

I have no idea why or when the modern church made this a secret ordinance. It's clearly never been a secret. Because it basically represents a "Church within a Church" and the second anointing is something most members cannot attain. What I find incredibly ironic is that the author of the statement...

Hans and Brigitta Mattson, 2nd and 3rd Witnesses for the 2nd Anointing

I'm a little surprised that this has not been mentioned by anybody yet, but during John Dehlin's catch-up interview with Hans and Brigitta Mattson (only available on his Facebook page right now) they talked about their experience with the 2nd anointing. Apparently they received the ordinance in the ...

This was also disturbing: President Eyring said. “Pray for feelings of remorse, and for guidance in making things right. Having done that, pray for feelings of forgiveness.” As this happens, “you can recognize not only the miracle of forgiveness, but also the power of the doctrines of the Church, t...

Re: MormonLeaks releases audio of bishop speaking with YW after firearm discharges in building

They just can't help themselves, can they? And yet they trumpet how transparent they are. Well, actually the exact phrase that both Cook and Ballard used recently was "we are as transparent as we know how to be." Which apparently, is very little. I'm not often glad I'm me rather than someone else, b...

Re: Fascinating Conversation with my Wife

Love reading stories like this, it gives me a lot of hope. Especially when you mention how incremental this progress was - I see similar signs in Sis. M that she's thawing from her strict TBMness, and even the kids have noticed. The marriage/family is the number one priority, it's great to see that ...
