Re: Should I Do This Interview?

Are you emotionally in a place where it won’t be too triggering? Are you out to everyone you care about? Is there anyone who will blame themselves for getting you into that so called “therapy”? People really do need to know that this therapy does not work and is harmful. But please don’t hurt you b...

Re: I need some support. TW/CW child rape

This has been a horrific story for your family, and I'm so sorry for what you are going through. Calling the police is absolutely the right thing to do, so you can't do more than that, other than try and help your daughter heal. I surely hope that starts as soon as possible for you and for your child.

Maybe get her to vape some ginseng or other "natural" herb? Is that even a possibility?

I'm just pleased you decided to share this with your SO, and she didn't just shut you down. That's pretty cool and is a great illustration of the openness of the communication in your marriage.

Just an update. Things have settled down some, we've had more calm discussions and we're trying.
Great news! Good luck navigating these conversations.

Re: Divorce Advice?

The goal of counseling is not to force anyone to change, but to facilitate understanding and communication between both people. If your wife will not attend counseling, then attend by yourself. With a good counselor, you will be amazed at how much perspective and enlightenment you can gain about yo...

Yeah, I'm not entirely sold on the changes, but they are generally for the better. But NBI nailed it, it's lipstick on a pig.

But one less hour of church and shorter, less misogynistic temple sessions? Sign me up!

Re: Question about LDS Church

Does the LDS Church (COJCOLDS) believe each person has the right to live a life of dignity with access to basic necessities in a safe and sustainable environment? Yes to basic necessities - no to dignity. It does not treat its members with dignity, not even the faithful ones, therefore you would ha...

Re: The 40 Year Old Social Virgin

I actually quite enjoyed my social virgin status, all my other academic colleagues were ecstatic that I could play designated driver and drive all their drunk a$$es home. Made me the hit of the party! And those of you who know academe, these people can drink. I've never quite understood how a bunch ...

Re: 2 faced gentiles

I would be the guy in that situation that would sit quitely and listen, and then when the guy jokingly 'hoped' that no one there was Mormon, announce that I was. I wouldn't be a jerk about it, but I'd love to watch them all squirm. Seriously, mocking people behind their backs isn't cool. Imagine be...

Re: 2 faced gentiles

When I was beginning my faith transition, I read a great piece on this phenomenon from Rock Waterman about this: http://puremormonism.blogspot.com/2010/08/why-dont-they-like-us.html It was spot on, and the reason people don't like Mormons very much. They are Amway friends - when you buy what they're...

Re: Book making the book club circuit in my area

Has anyone read "Educated" by Tara Westover? Looks like it has some gems about survivalist anti-gov anti-vax mindset prominent in some areas of the Mormon corridor (Idaho) and how a young woman escapes the family worldview through education. Educated: A Memoir https://www.amazon.com/dp/0399590501/r...

Re: Define: Manhood

If I may suggest, sometimes us guys born and raised in the church struggle to find our place in the world when our religious structure falls apart because we don't know any other framework. That leaves us with an identity crisis that we struggle to find an answer for. It impacts our marriages, our ...

I forget that I'm playing the long game, and try to push a bit on her thinking. It never ends well, and I need to remember not to run faster than she has strength, yada yada. So isn't this the difficult thing? Husband and I are having a conversation, and I hold back because I think to myself, "long...

Re: Mr. and Mrs. Græy's Stuff

That's a tough position to be in, and I'm glad Sis M is more careful on how she uses the "adversary is after you" language these days, but she liberally said this in the beginning, so I feel your pain. I have the opposite problem, actually. Because of my "apostasy," Sis M has an aversion to going wi...

Re: Dallin Oaks: “I suggest that research is not the answer"

Hey doesn't this "research is not the answer" statement directly contradict a recent conference talk where they said members should contact good Mormon "experts" who have the answers and they can alleviate all your concerns? I seem to recall that in a recent conference talk. 🤔 So maybe he just mean...

Re: Why are we even having this conversation?

Now, I'm not stupid to think that this strategy might actually succeed in the short run, but I can tell you, that my immediate circle knows more of the problems of church history, church culture and the practices of the modern corporate church than they ever had before. And it leads to conversation...

Re: Lazy Theology and Selective Scripture Reading

I think I'm too much of a lazy theological Mormon to even respond to this! But it's a good question - and I would suspect what you do, that the lazy theology comes first, and then the selective reading to support the lazy theology. As a historian I never want to read modern context into histor...

The Covenant Hand?

Has anybody caught this on reddit? Some kid made a recording of Oaks coming in to a group of youth and telling them all to take the sacrament with the right hand: https://youtu.be/d0siBml8crY Of all the pearls of wisdom you could have given a group of impressionable youth, and this is the best you'v...

Is She Coming Around? Maybe, Maybe Not, and It's OK

So Sis. M and I had some very interesting conversations the past couple of days, given the release of the new topics essays - some of it positive, and some of it NOT so positive. And a lot of the latter, frankly, has been my fault. I forget that I'm playing the long game, and try to push a bit on he...
