Re: General Konference Predictions

Over the last few years, I've been interested in deconstructing conference so I've listened carefully. This year, I don't know if it's general pandemic malaise, but I'm just not up for it. But since my expectations were squashed so effectively last conference, the bar is pretty low for anything of s...

That's the only reason I'd go.

In all seriousness, I wonder if they are making a big deal out of this, so Nelson can have his own 25th anniversary party for HIS proclamation down the road. Otherwise, that nothingburger is going to get...nothing.

Re: House Church lessons

My wife was in tears the other night because she felt like home church wasn’t being taken serious enough by the family. The lessons never go well, the kids talk back or ask questions that derail the come follow me manual. I asked her what she expected the lessons to be like. She expressed frustrati...

Re: Rasband's Face-to-Face

Let's re-frame the question. Or in other words: You're asking the wrong question . Why don't they just post a list of "Approved Questions?" They're obviously following a script, It would make things slightly easier for the old, out-of-touch kooks to follow said script. Makes me wonder if I had seen...

Re: Rasband's Face-to-Face

We watched it in the Mormorrisey house, and it was actually the question before that exchange you mention graey, that got one of my kids all riled up - the question was essentially about sometimes questioning and disagreeing with what was being taught in church, and how you deal with those feelings?...

Re: Suicide

There is an old sectarian notion that suicide is a sin. I am glad he labeled this false. It would help if he acknowledged that this can be found in old church materials and is still false. Absolutely agree. But it will be a cold day in hell before that happens. Throwing older prophets under the bus...

Re: Another blow to John Gee

Man, Dan Peterson has now entered the fray to support his buddy John Gee and his battle with secular heathens: https://www.patheos.com/blogs/danpeterson/2020/09/shut-up-he-explained.html Reading the comments, it's just hilarious - there's a troll that keeps asking Dan if he is "going to follow the B...

Re: Another blow to John Gee

I've been browsing and occasionally commenting on some faithful reddit boards, and it astounds me how much they defend John Gee and his work, and claim that Jana is "out to get him" and had a nefarious hand in getting his book pulled from Deseret Book and the BYU religious centre. Lest we forget, Jo...

Re: What are you doing to protect your family against the virus?

Can I give you an outsider's view of what's going on with my neighbour to the south? I simply can't understand it. I have no idea how a pandemic can become politicized. It's a virus, for God's sake. It's not a political tool. How do you blame a country for a virus, just because it started there? Chi...

Re: 6 months...

It’s been really good for me not to be attending in person as it has significantly reduced my Sunday church anxiety. However, I’m not so sure it’s reduced the spousehold anxiety as family home church has replaced physical worship. Sister R likes to participate with her family gathering which is ok ...

Re: It's Been A Bad Month For John Gee

Looks like the folks over at the Mormon Discussions board had a longer look at Gee's book when it first came out, and had an interesting discussion: http://mormondiscussions.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=53620 I think I need to check out that board a little more! I've seen some familiar avatars, but I gue...

From Reddit: I know many have asked about the recent changes to the endowment announced by the First Presidency last month. Here are the modifications I can remember from taking my son through the temple for his mission this week: - Up to 16 people per session, but you must be part of a single grou...

Re: Petition regarding BYU

This is fascinating to me, and it definitely mirrors the larger church, doesn't it? You have a few hardcore TBM's that are decrying the liberal bent of the current church, and instead of turning to the Snufferites, are trying to mold it in their own way. Heck, that's what more liberal Mormons are do...

It's Been A Bad Month For John Gee

So a couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to have a brief look at John Gee's non-Egyptian book, Saving Faith , which he published this year, and it basically was an attempt (from just reading the introduction) to counteract Jana Riess's book on millennial Mormons - and her conclusion that many...

That's, uh, not good. Sorry your wife is going through that. It's good that you're there, Yobispo, to take the sting away. I have a sibling that really takes my narcissistic mother's rants very hard, even though they've had no contact for a couple of years now, and has blocked her. Messages still te...

Re: New RFM podcast - John Gee Comes Clean - BoA apologetics are being obliterated lately

What a great podcast, and as we saw with consiglieri's interview with Robert Ritner, it's clear that Gee and Peterson will say anything to lay out their apologetics and defend the institution that pays them. Some great catches by RFM. I had actually read Gee's paper about the four idolatrous gods in...

Re: New Mormon Stories/RFM interview with Egyptologist Robert Ritner

So I finally finished listening, and it was a long, long slog. But very worth it and entertaining - but I'm not entirely sure it was "new" information, Ritner's written work has been around a long time, and most of what he was saying was from his written work. As as even Ritner himself said multiple...

I told her it was lots of little things but I was fine, she pressed more, I told her I didn't want to talk about stuff with her that touched church stuff, and then she basically told me I was controlling and that she wanted to do more outings with church people, go to the temple more, and tell our ...

Wow, just listened to part 2 - as a cultural historian, this was fascinating to me. Great job, all! There's no way on this earth, after what happened in these two episodes, and presumably what will happen in the third episode, that Muhlestein and Gee will show up to this academic standoff. Not a cha...
