Re: Shunning the shunners

Its clear our boundaries with my pediphile apologist inlaws isn't enough to limit thier aggression toward us and we will go no contact. Its likely we will be cutting off all contact with the entire clan for the forseeable future. Its also likely every time an individual faces a parole board we will...

Re: Running out of post power--and interest...

I feel for you on this subject. I only post now when I have the time - interest, well, apart from the occasional rant I need to do, my apathy for all things Mormon (except for the family) is at an all time high. That, as an attendee at church, has saved me more than I can say. But life just gets in ...

Re: Mass disclosure

I'm sorry you're going through this, it's not fun - I've been there, and while I'm past the stage you're in, it was sucky when I was there. Tough times, for sure. I wish you well as you navigate this with your family. I have to say, though, to heck with the people who don't think you should be at th...

Re: Are youth really leaving?

I agree with RR, yes and no. At least in my little area on the periphery. I'm sure it's a lot different here than in the Morridor. Numbers wise, it's not great. The usual stake indicators of kids going missions, prospective elders getting the priesthood and the attendance at our YSA ward is abysmal....

Wow, a celebrity in our midst! You and hawkgrrrl's posts have become must reads for me on that site. Great to know! Some interesting comments on your post, eh?

Very thoughtful article.

Re: Yes Men?

Mormorrisey, what if you asked the question of which age demographic is leaving in the greatest number for your stake and why that age group is leaving? I would love to hear their answer and speculation. I've thought about doing that, but they have the data in their reports, and it's clear with any...

Re: Yes Men?

I think we place WAY too much importance on the need for unity, and that effectively stifles lively discussion on the issues. Perhaps this isn't what you're looking for, but I see the family as a microcosm of the institutional church with this issue. My husband’s family is an example of how the “ye...

Re: To tell in-laws or not?

I agree with RR and alas about the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, especially after I read what you posted about your family and appearances. Your husband is very different, and I think it was a great idea to tell him. But your in-laws? Maybe it's better to keep it in a lower key. That's what I do, ...

Re: Bishops as counselors

I can only agree with OP and the others that most bishops are untrained as counselors. Maybe they can help with spiritual stuff, but my goodness, to help those suffering from abuse, depression and mental illness? No. Not at all. Unless they are trained professionals - and even then they might put th...

Re: The Trickster God

I'm not your friend, you sons of bitches. You were the ones that decided that. You were the ones that decided how this was going to be. Wow. It seems that your professed faith in God and Christ has done nothing to elicit even the smallest degree of a charitable response from you regardless of what ...

Yes Men?

While a bit on the tame side these days, I still read the wheat and tares blog from time to time. A great post recently on yes men, which gave me some reflection on my over one year anniversary of my "service" on the high council: https://wheatandtares.org/2019/07/14/yes-men/ So I've given this some...

Re: The Trickster God

When my shelf crashed, I found myself not just disbelieving Mormonism, I also found myself disbelieving in God. Why?...because there are horrible things attributed to God and his Patriarchs in the Bible. God is not just a trickster, he is also amoral, even cruel. And this is the problem I have with...

Re: Thought Experiment 1: Correct Faithful Worldview/Paradigm for BOA

I'll take a stab at this, having read some of your material on your website. I'll focus solely on number 11 for brevity, where you state, "since the Hor Papyrus text characters interpolated into the Book of Abraham text are NOT information containers from which the text of the Book of Abraham is mec...

Re: Primary kid interviews?

Holy smokes. Apparently in a recent survey, the church is now floating the idea of having one on one interviews with kids starting as young as 8. They ALREADY interview every 8-year-old who "wants" to get baptized, along with every 11-year-old who "advances" from primary... So what's the big deal w...

Re: RFM and RMN's telling of whoppers

This really helps to shed light on how the church's foundational stories probably grew into miracles out of very mundane events and personal emotions/imaginings by providing a modern-day example. The difference is that the speed and interactivity of modern media has made it possible for astute obse...

Oh yes they are: https://kutv.com/news/local/lds-church-considering-lowering-age-for-youth-interviews-with-clergy-from-12-to-8 This is literally the most ...

Re: RFM and RMN's telling of whoppers

I just listened to RFM's podcast about Pres. Nelson's miracle making: https://radiofreemormon.org/2019/06/radio-free-mormon-072-the-miracle-making-of-president-nelson/ This is a fascinating example of how religious experiences become embellished over time. In just a few years Russell Nelson and his...

Re: RFM--Was the 1835 First Vision Account Suppressed?

A new Radio Free Mormon podcast went up yesterday dealing with this issue. https://mormondiscussionpodcast.org/2019/06/radio-free-mormon-073-was-the-1835-first-vision-account-suppressed/ I had to do a lot of digging in the Joseph Smith Papers Project, among other sources, but eventually think I may...

Re: Burned over district & Joseph's search for truth

This new narrative does look like a strong case for the church …... until …... you follow the ….. footnotes. Then you realize the level of deception and conflation conducted by the church's history department and the apologists. The church needs to stop adding footnotes and shooting themselves in t...

Re: Burned over district & Joseph's search for truth

To me at least, of all the things Joseph made up or plagiarized, the fact that there wasn't an ACTUAL revival in Palmyra during the time frame he describes is definitely not a smoking gun. There WERE revivals all around him, and he would have been influenced by them. No question in my mind. Joseph ...
