Re: God is Talking to Mark Taylor - What is President Nelson's Problem?

I have heard that TSM and other in church leadership were convince Romney was going to win in 2012, to the point where they believed they had a prophecy/revelation about it. They were supposedly shocked when he wasn’t elected. I guess my point is, a retired firefighter is probably more likely to hea...

Re: Youth fireside ?

Methinks at this point that RMN referring to "The Gathering of Israel" simply means: Missionary Work. It's just a fancy way of saying: WE NEED MORE PEOPLE TO PAY TITHING! I agree but like with all things LDS, the meanings of words and phrases change considerably as time goes by. At one point the ga...

Re: Youth fireside ?

The gathering of Israel What does even mean anymore? Now, I get that the so-called gathering of Israel is one key component to usher in the 2nd coming, but why does it even matter anymore? Roughly 4,000 years ago an extended family moves further away from each other (and since they took a social me...

Re: Doing a write-up on blacks/priesthood for 'Be One,' - Any suggestions on what to cover?

This is a great article by Lester Bush. It was in Dialogue Journal and was written before the change in 1978. Supposedly it had a big influence on SWK's decision to make the change. It's long but well worth the read. Lots and lots of information. https://www.dialoguejournal.com/wp-content/uploads/sb...

Interesting article about religion and lack of intellectual humility.

https://www.inquisitr.com/4912504/study-right-wing-authoritarianism-accounts-for-correlation-between-religion-and-lack-of-intellectual-humility/ I like this quote: In other words, to be intellectually humble means to recognize that you might be wrong about what you believe. It seems the more religio...

This is a great thread on AskReddit, insane stories from the Bible.

I've wasted a few hours reading these. It's funny what the OT lesson manuals skip in SS & seminary.

Re: Why I love the essays

Here's a good one. I had misspelled Neil L. Andersen's name as Anders o n, and GoogleDoc's spellchecker caught it. It's a pretty impressive checker. I have noticed in lecture classes that when the professor says the name of an obscure Mayan or Aztec god I just have to take a wild guess at it and Go...

Re: Buckle up, apocalypse imminent!

Can't tell you how many times I have heard, "We don't need to worry about running out of resources because God planned enough for man until the second coming." I generally maintain myself within their logic and retort that faith without works is dead and God will let natural consequences follow for...

Imagine you're an 18 year old kid who bishop is delaying your mission for masturbating or looking at boobies. Then you hear about this guy. How can the church possibly punish horny kids for being horny kids while this guy walks? The best theory out there is that this Bishop guy got his second anoin...

Re: Scientists have established a link between brain damage and religious fundamentalism

[/quote] Interesting. The prefrontal cortex is where we deal with complexity, the thinking part of the brain. It could make sense I think, that if a fundamentalist religious culture limits development of the prefrontal cortex, that person's speech patterns might be altered. Due to the alteration in ...

Re: Scientists have established a link between brain damage and religious fundamentalism

I can't help but wonder if there here is also the possibility that some people have a genetic/cerebrophysiological (I think I just invented that word) propensity for religiosity. I guess that's what scrupulosity is. If there is a genetic component, it seems likely that people who are attracted to f...

Scientists have established a link between brain damage and religious fundamentalism

https://www.rawstory.com/2018/03/scientists-established-link-brain-damage-religious-fundamentalism/ This is a very interesting study. It doesn't specifically mention mormonism but in reading the description of religious fundamentalists, it hits mormonism directly on the head. I like this quote, it p...

According to the SLTrib, the First Pres says mormons don't have to be republican.

Nothing about it on KSL or the Desperate News. I wonder why the church owned media doesn't have anything about it. Perhaps they don't want to ruffle the feathers of the member who believe it's impossible to be Mo and vote democratic.
