Re: Ben Shapiro and transgender mental illness
I think Shapiro and others react to what they view as someone else's view being impose on them. He and others seem to really resent having to refer to someone they think is a man as a woman. They think they are being required to do something that they disagree with. This is how it may be someones ...

Re: The Unimportance Of Women's Work
Church society and expectations are still based on a "1950's" model. American society in general undervalues women's work in many ways, but Mormon society lags well behind and these disparities are pretty much a necessity for Mormonism. Mormonism needs a family structure based on the somewhat ...

Re: Ben Shapiro and transgender mental illness
The reason I find it interesting is because as I have changed my religious views and shed some of the Mormon shackles, I find that my political views have become more liberal as well. I think this is pretty common. I wonder why that is? ... I thought this was interesting and educated me a little ...

Re: Ben Shapiro and transgender mental illness
Shapiro insists on his unfettered right to his freedom of speech. Yet, he attempts to control what other people say and more importantly what other people do. It's a warped, biased approach. Some may even call it privileged. As he isn't a transgender person, a medical professional or researcher ...

Re: Ben Shapiro and transgender mental illness
It sounds like Shapiro is trying to make a distinction that simply isn't supported by what we know and what we don't know. He says he's talking about people where their body is one sex but they feel they are a different sex. There are so many attempts at unwarranted distinctions in this type of a ...

Re: Ben Shapiro and transgender mental illness
I believe my fundamental questions regarding transgender people are: Does it really matter? Is it really any of my business? What can I do to better support people as they are without first requiring them to adhere to my own biases? I'm a pretty cisgender guy, though kind of gender non-conforming in ...

Re: Sealing Cancellation
So many people are married for "time and all eternity"....and the church emphasizes over and over the "eternity" portion. Why not place a little more effort on the "time" portion,...hunh? If the church did that, perhaps the "eternity" might work a little better. That was one of my big realizations ...

[This is another update on a different controversial topic, that originated on a now-locked thread and included a different thread. Moderators, if this is too off-topic let me know and I'll take it down, but I think there is value in knowing more about what some quoted, referenced public figures are ...

Re: What about NewNameNoah?
In the third episode (which I still haven't finished listening to!) Dehlin plays a pretty heavy-handed devil's advocate regarding whether Mike's actions have done more good than bad and he evokes the backlash effect, but in episode two he points out that external irritation has done more to ...

Re: Do over sacrament prayers..
When I was a priest, the bishop directed us in taking one priest quorum meeting and going around and having everyone practice the sacrament prayers a few times. Practice is good, but I'm not sure how helpful this really was.

Re: Are you anti-free speech?
Here's a briefer, though harsher, explanation of the topic:

(I'm not saying the sentiments expressed in the XKCD comic exactly apply in this discussion, but they are applicable a lot of times when someone raises the call for free speech.)

Re: Are you anti-free speech?
The U.S. has very strong free speech protections. I'm definitely in favor of these protections. That being said, free speech rights, like all others, are not absolute. The classic example is that you don't have the right to shout "Fire!" in a crowded theater. There are a number of other exceptions ...

[This post is a bit of a deviation from recent discussion on this thread, but it harks back to some other comments that occasioned the creation of this thread. I thought it would be good enough to drop these comments here.] In some comments a few weeks back, Mark Regnerus's "New Family Structures ...

Re: Guns at church?
So it brings up the point that nothing is definitive and both sides have an agenda and bias. For example the last 2 active shooter events cited (walmart and the church killing) seem to disprove the notion presented in the daily show thesis. "Disproved" is way too strong of a term. A couple of ...

Re: What about NewNameNoah?
One of the things I was most interested in seeing with Mike's interview was how he did it. I was curious what methods he used. The interview came out pretty clearly on that point and was pretty informative. Basically, it's good old-fashioned in-depth investigation. The staple of quality, deep ...

Re: What about NewNameNoah?
What do you think? Is Mike a hero or a demon? I rather think that's a false dichotomy. People aren't generally either heroes or demons. People are people, with good and bad characteristics. I watched the interview, even though I very rarely watch or listen to Mormon Stories or anything like that ...

Gender Revolution
On one of the now-deleted threads, someone mentioned a National Geographic issue earlier this year about gender. It is the January 2017 issue, likely available at your local library if you don't have a subscription. It is titled, "Gender Revolution", with articles "Making a Man", "The Science of ...

Re: Guns at church?
Do you think many of the members will go rogue? Someone once said that the one thing Mormons love more than their church is their guns. I've suspected that the Church has been leery to put that choice to the test with the concealed gun permit crowd. I don't know how it's posted or made known in ...
