Re: Girl Boy Scouts

My DD is a Girl Scout. It is a great program. It totally blows Activity Days and Personal Progress out of the water. I don't know. I almost kind of feel like the church's allegiance to BSA will hinge on who scares them more: the gays or empowered girls. How will the fear of gays matter in that cons...

Popcorn cookies?
Uggh. No. Dump the popcorn and just go with the cookies. I said the best of both programs, not just everything from both programs.

Re: Girl Boy Scouts

In most of the rest of the world there are not separate organizations for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. There is just scouting, for boys and girls. The other countries find the U.S.A. weird, especially at international scouting events. The Girl Scouts of America is not very happy about this change. It...

Re: Both sides pretending

It depends on a lot of different things, but this response is fairly common. My wife and I both saw it to a significant degree as we left the church. The only person who inquired about our leaving, who wanted to know anything more, left herself not all that long after. People shy away from things th...

Re: The prophet is perfect?

Roughly, the "never been married" rates for women have doubled in the last 30 years. The divorce rate is roughly 70%. Modern marriage is more like Swingfest than actual, commit for life type relationships. Not that I have a solution for it, but marriage doesn't really exist like it used to. You've ...

Re: top 5 smoking guns

I think this thread does a pretty good job of illustrating something I've said a bit lately -- different people place differing levels of importance on different things. Some things are significant to some people and not to others. And, if I'm not misgendering too many people too badly, I think we c...

Re: The prophet is perfect?

Point it, regardless of genders and numbers, in general, marriage is a dying institution. . . . . in modern civilization. Actually it seems to be pretty popular. There are over 60 million married couples in the U.S.A. That seems to constitute a high degree of popularity. It's so popular that some p...

Re: The prophet is perfect?

Actual experts on the history and sociology of marriage will explain to you that there are lots of variations on marriage throughout human history and communities. In all these variations, some form of plural or polygamous marriage is most prevalent. Of course, the prevalence of something or its tra...

Re: top 5 smoking guns

It's really a very personal thing as to what makes a difference in someone's faith. Each person's top 5 is going to be different. Or top 400. After years of my slow separation from the church and many hours and hours of discussion on all sorts of topics I found troubling or concerning, my wife final...

Re: Why no children from JS plural marriages?

Joseph Smith was an idealist and the prophet. He was not a governor or King. And that is why he was removed. This one's clearly contradicted by the historical record. Or meaningless hair-splitting. As Not Buying It notes, he did consider himself king, having had himself ordained as such. Whether he...

Re: Why no children from JS plural marriages?

Comparing JS with JC makes as much sense. JC ran with women of questionable character, but in the end, it was Peter and Paul that created the Christian church. And regardless of what they were or did, billions of people follow Jesus. The "image of Christ" suits them. So whether or not JS was a poly...

Re: Why no children from JS plural marriages?

I find it interesting that some will strongly fight against believing that Joseph lived polygamy and most especially that there were any sexual relations with any of his plural wives if he did practice it. But, these same members will be just fine with BY and other early Prophets and church leaders...

Re: Why no children from JS plural marriages?

I realize it's extremely important to you that Joseph didn't engage in polygamy. That certainly colors the way you view any evidence and claims. I really couldn't care one way or the other. It doesn't matter to me. It has no bearing on much of anything. It's true that the evidence wouldn't necessari...

Re: I realized that there was no need for women

Interesting point. Blogs are becoming old school. Still. There's anonymity with the blog. The commenters need that, still. If the commenters need anonymity, they'll go where they can get. Such as places like this. It seems like a lot are a lot less concerned with it these days. Maybe that's because...

Re: I realized that there was no need for women

We all know strong, brilliant women who would make amazing speakers and leaders but we don't seem to hear as much from them. I would gladly transfer my priesthood to one of them and let her run with it. Otherwise, it's pretty much going to waste on me. I'd offer up mine, also. I'm not using it. The...

Re: I realized that there was no need for women

Excellent observations! A number of things I hadn't recognized before. Much of what you observe has to with magnifying and reinforcing the priesthood. In other words, preparing boys to accept their privileged positions of public recognition and girls to accept their submissive, quiet positions. In o...
