Re: General Conference Predictions
Bill Reel posted his potential changes from a trusted source: - loosening of the word of wisdom - 2 hour block instead of three - shorter endowment sessions - removing the 1 year wait to be sealed after a civil marriage. - making garments no longer required outside the temple - equalizing missions -...

Re: 20% of missionaries coming home early
There was a survey released this week showing it was over 30%... I wonder if the 20% was from the church or that survey. It makes sense to give men the 18 month option though - it would make their #s a lot better and maybe some more would choose to go if they knew it wasn't a full two years. I feel ...

Re: Amazon reviews of "Saints"
If you read Saints, you can see why it's "Easy to read." It really isn't presented like a historical document, but rather reads like a fiction novel (they use the term narrative non-fiction)... It's watered down and the dialogue feels very over the top at least in the first 10 chapters, to a point w...

Re: General Conference Predictions
WOW...OK...another rumor is floating that my friend dug up. The church wants to avoid being sued over civil marriages in the temple. So, the church may be getting out of the marriage business--all marriages will be civililly performed, and then after a waiting period (like 72 hours....that is what ...

Re: Happy Autumnal Equinox (Hill Cumorah Day) everybody
Reading through Saints this week has really brought home just how "magical" the gold plates/Moroni/etc stuff is... Hagoth pointed it out in the annotated essay, but I guess I just forget sometimes how frequently the Autumnal Equinox is used with the plates year after year... it's so obvious what is ...

Re: General Conference Predictions
I think the civil marriage/sealing thing is very possible - the church is going to position themselves now so that if there is a law passed that they can no longer exclude gays from marriage, they can immediately cut civil marriages from the temple. So for now the church can waive the 1-year "grace ...

Re: General Conference Predictions
They're getting excited over on the faithful reddit: "At the leadership meeting at stake conference, the visiting general authority said, "if you thought April Conference was exciting with changes, then buckle up for October." Then later he discussed the need in the church to "reduce and simplify."....

Re: I hate to say it, but FAIRMORMON has a point...
But I hate to say it, FAIRMORMON has a point - critics of the Church have somewhat misrepresented the letter by leaving key sections of it out. I'm not going back to TBM status over it, but I think it should serve as a warning that we need to be as fair, open, and complete in the information we pro...

Re: Starting a review/fact-check of Saints... Chapter 5 published Sept 22 (Urim Thummim/Reformed Egyptian/First 116 Page
I just finished Chapter 5 this morning... that chapter is an absolute doozy when you look at the Martin Harris/Anthon meeting that the church continues to push as fact when Anthon has a completely different story, and that we have varying descriptions of what the "Urim and Thummim" looked like when ...

Re: Hans and Brigitta Mattson, 2nd and 3rd Witnesses for the 2nd Anointing
When I was investigating the church a good 20 years ago now, I remember the teacher at the time talking about the second anointing. I didn't know that was the term at the time, but he talked about how if you are faithful and do everything you're supposed to, then you will get the opportunity to go t...

Re: The Toxic Teachings of Henry J. Eyring
It is really disgusting how the church continues to blame those with doubts in order to keep others from questioning the problems they come across. I honestly can not believe in 2018 he would get up in front of college students and say this, and I can not believe the church thinks it is a good idea ...

Re: Starting a review/fact-check of Saints... chapter one done... but is it helpful or worthwhile?
Three chapters down... I can see why Saints took 6 years of approvals before release. They dance so carefully around these issues that it's amazing they released this at all. If you read Saints along with the church's claim that this is the newest, most honest church history and then read any type o...

Re: Dissecting Elder Cook on Church History
My favorite question was the one from the girl who asked how we can sacrifice even more, like the saints who built the Kirtland temple. Those are the hard-hitting questions that only and apostle can answer. Low point: Elder Cook's extended laughter at the thought of the cast-aside first wife stayin...

Re: Dissecting Elder Cook on Church History
Speaking of communicating, did anyone else have slight irritation with the primary children voice inflections and pentameter that both Kate and Matt use when speaking? I get that the audience is the youth, but it was noticeable to me. Feels patronizing in some way. As I listened to the Face to Face...

Re: Scribes Caused Contradictions in FV Accounts?
Bushman has stated that we don't even know who wrote the 1838 account which is one reason for his dominant narrative isn't true statement. Bushman is such an amazing LDS figure to me. How he knows what he knows and stays in boggles my mind. I really have a hard time believing it's as simple as maki...

Re: Starting a review/fact-check of Saints... chapter one done... but is it helpful or worthwhile?
I like your work jfro18, so I say go for it! That said, I feel like most things that can be fact-checked have been. Obviously you can't really fact-check the details of the first vision, and huge chunks of the rest of the book are really only "true" if that event is also "true." What I have found w...
